The first heat pumps Graham Hendra sold, about 15 years ago, weren't very hot.
"To get 50C - that was quite hard," says the former wholesaler, referring to the temperature of the water that these devices sent to radiators, known as the flow temperature. Today's gas combi boilers are typically designed for flow temperatures of around 50-60C.
The older heat pumps might have struggled to heat some homes adequately unless the homeowner decided to install larger radiators, for example. The increased surface area of such radiators helps transfer heat into the room.
But a new breed of heat pumps is emerging. Engineers have gradually improved the technology, meaning that heat pumps are now able to supply much higher temperatures, sometimes in excess of 70C.
A major change has been the rise of new refrigerants, including R290, or propane. This is the fluid that circulates inside a heat pump. In an air source device, the refrigerant captures warmth from the outside air, even on cold days. By compressing the slightly warmed refrigerant, the heat pump is able to increase the temperature and then transfer that heat into a property.

1 - Sock-it to the energy vampires in your home
Between 9% and 16% of total electricity consumed in homes is used to power appliances while in standby mode.
An easy way to prevent these energy vampires from feasting on your electricity and driving up your energy bill is by connecting them all to a multi socket extension.
This allows you to turn them all off at once with the flick of a switch.
2 - Get rid of draughts around your home
Draughts are one of the biggest energy efficiency killers in UK homes.
This is because if any of your external doors or windows are letting cold air in, they will also be letting warm air out.
Simply block any draughts up, and your energy bills will come down.
3 - Spend less time in the shower
It’s no secret that most people enjoy a nice hot shower, especially in the winter.
But, did you know that long hot showers could be pushing your energy bills up?
In fact, by reducing your shower time by as little as 2 minutes, you can save 27 pounds a year on your energy bills.
4 - Fill the dishwasher
While washing the dishes by hand will definitely save on your energy bill, it will also increase your water bill at the same time.
Washing dishes by hand actually uses 10 times more water than if you use a dishwasher.
However, if you use a dishwasher to clean just a few dishes, your energy bills will definitely be on the rise. The answer then, to lowering your energy bills, is to only turn the dishwasher on when it’s full.
5 - Have energy saving evenings
An undeniably great way to lower your energy bills is to simply not use electricity. But it doesn’t mean that you have to sit in the dark and be bored.
You could go back to basics and have a candlelit dinner, or simply forgo electric entertainment for an energy free option.
You could have a themed board game night with candles to add to the atmosphere, or read a book out loud, with different people doing character voices

Do you know how developed social housing?
In the late 1980s, many councils transferred their social housing into housing association ownership through Large-Scale Voluntary Transfer agreements.
Housing associations were also given new freedoms to borrow private funding to build new homes, topping up the funding they received from the government. They built 419,000 new homes between 1990 and 2010.
The recent work of housing associations has been shaped by government funding changes.
In 2010, funding for building affordable housing reduced by 60% and funding for new social rented housing was stopped altogether.
Housing associations adapted to this change by generating their own income to build social and affordable rented homes.
They began to develop more homes for sale and market rent and invested the proceeds into building more social homes and into supporting their local communities.
They built almost 20,000 social rented homes in this way between 2015/16 and 2018/19, as well as nearly 77,000 for affordable rent and nearly 43,000 for shared ownership.
Looking to the future, the nation needs to be building 90,000 social homes a year to solve our housing crisis.
Housing associations want to deliver this, and to support communities around the country to thrive, and they’re calling for the right government investment to make that happen.

Why heat pumps?
Heat pumps supply more energy than they consume, by extracting heat from their surroundings.
Currently, heat pump systems can supply as much as 3kW of heat output for just 1kW of energy input.
Unlike other heating systems heat pumps can also be used for cooling. They are used for commercial space heating, domestic heating, and process heating.
Some of the key advantages of using heat pumps are:
• Zero emissions – reduce your environmental impact
• The utilisation of natural, inexhaustible energy sources
• Efficiency: Renewable energy sources are up to 5 times more efficient than traditional energy sources, such as gas!
Are homes in the UK going greener?
Are we, at the very least, making progress toward making homes more energy-efficient?
The government has a target to get as many homes ‘as practicable’ up to an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating of C by 2035.
Data shows that 60% of homes for sale on Rightmove – and 50% of homes available to rent – have an EPC rating of D or below.
We’ve asked thousands of homeowners and landlords to share their views on the practical challenges to creating more sustainable homes and to find out more about the energy-saving changes they’re already making.
A year on from our first report, there are still significant hurdles in the pathway to greener homes. But some progress is being made.
The Future Homes Standard is a positive move for new homes to be Net Zero carbon ready from 2025, with exciting innovations happening in this sector, which has the benefit of building from scratch.
The benefit of making green improvements can be seen in the overall premium that a seller can command. Our analysis shows that sellers who have improved their homes from an EPC rating of an F up to a C could command an average price premium of almost £56,000 (+15%) on top of the local house price growth.

«Зелёные» директивы ЕС
В апреле 2023 года Европейский парламент одобрил пересмотр Директивы об энергетических характеристиках зданий (Energy Performance Of Buildings Directive, EPBD).
Она пока не принята окончательно, но собственникам и покупателям жилья в ЕС уже стоит ориентироваться на обозначенный в ней вектор.
Согласно её положениям, к 2030 году продать иди сдать в аренду можно будет только недвижимость с классом энергоэффективности не ниже Е, а к 2033 – не ниже D.
Глобальная цель, которой Европа стремится достичь «зелёными» инициативами – сократить до 2030 выбросы углерода как минимум на 55% (по сравнению с 1990 годом), а в перспективе стать углеродно-нейтральным континентом.
Ещё одна директива (Energy Efficiency Directive), принятая в июле 2023 года, обязывает страны ЕС обеспечить в период с 2024 по 2030 год среднегодовой уровень энергосбережения в 1,5%, что почти вдвое превышает текущий норматив в 0,8%.
Принимаемые в Европе законы влияют на стоимость недвижимости и европейские рынки уже сейчас .
Например, в Великобритании, квартиры или дома с высоким рейтингом энергоэффективности могут стоить на 40 000 фунтов стерлингов больше, чем с самым низким.

Сколько продлится «солнечный шторм»?
С 18 по 19 ноября проходит магнитная буря красного уровня, которая негативно влияет на метеозависимых людей, беременных женщин и людей с хроническими заболеваниями.
