Elizabeth Marshall
Author. Keynote Speaker & Moderator. Strategist for authors, speakers, entrepreneurs and executives
Why are some authors and speakers able to maintain the momentum they've created while others get caught up in shiny objects or end up on a path to burnout?
In today's video, I highlight two of the hidden pitfalls in this third stage of thought leadership that consistently pull messengers off their unique path.
Have you ever wondered why some authors and speakers are consistently being "found" by new readers, audiences and organizations while others struggle to attract inbound opportunities?
In today's video, I introduce the third stage of thought leadership - Momentum - and address the one thing that's required to consistently achieve more impact with less effort.
What if knowing your current stage as a thought leader could lead to better decisions and better outcomes for authors and speakers?
That's the question I explore in today's video, including the two important things to know about the first stage of thought leadership (and what's required to progress to stage two).
Why is it that many authors and speakers can be so busy trying to "make things happen," but not see any real results or growth of their audience and platform?
In today's video, I address two of the biggest pitfalls in Building (the second stage of thought leadership) that often result in thought leaders spinning their wheels and feeling frustrated.
Why do some authors and speakers make it to the national stage while others fail to "launch" and attract an audience for their message?
In the fifth video of this series, I introduce Building, the second stage of thought leadership. I discuss why this stage is so critical to becoming a messenger with staying power and what's required to move through it.
Why do so many authors and speakers stay stuck in the first stage of thought leadership?
In the fourth video of this series, I address two of the big pitfalls in Incubation and what's required to avoid them to move on to the next stage.
In the first video of this series, I talked about the hidden patterns that affect authors and speakers.
Today, I want to highlight one of the biggest patterns I've seen that can lead to things like writing the wrong book, wasting money on the wrong launch strategies or simply working too hard without the results to show for it.
This short video addresses the first step that's required to break this pattern.
Today, I want to start a conversation about the patterns I've seen over the last 16 years that impact authors and speakers at all levels.
These patterns - whether we're aware of them or not - influence every aspect of the thought leader journey.
This 2-minute video is an introduction to how these patterns can affect your decisions, both big and small.
Is your message feeling less relevant as a result of the pandemic?
This is the question that so many and are asking right now.
In this 2-minute clip (from an impromptu interview last week), I offer a few questions to consider and shifts you can make to bring your message back in sync with your audience and their current reality.
In this impromptu interview, I was asked about how the pandemic has made it more challenging for thought leaders to change the conversation in their industry (as opposed to just adding to the noise.)
Here's my two-minute take on what's changed and one specific action to take.
In the midst of the pandemic, organizations of all sizes are looking to virtual panels and events as a way to create engagement and provide value to their customers, employees and partners. Unfortunately, most virtual panels end up being a waste of time for both the audience and the panelists alike.
In this video, I share a few specific ways that a skilled and strategic moderator can be the difference between a static, siloed conversation and a cohesive discussion that brings out the best in your panelists.
Two strategies for creating better engagement for your virtual panel or roundtable.
When you have a powerful message worth sharing, it can be intimidating when you look at all the “Brene Browns” in your category and wonder how you can contribute. Here’s a brief interview excerpt on why Thought Leadership is not a zero sum game and how you can successfully share your unique message and move the collective conversation forward in a meaningful way.
One of the most important habits and can develop is their mental game. I'll be the first one to admit this is much easier said than done.
John Jantsch's awesome new book, The Self-Reliant Entrepreneur, will help you develop the daily habit of focusing on the bigger questions in your business and work - the ones we so often overlook but are required for us to change the conversation in our industry and fulfill our unique potential. The best part? It takes less than 5 minutes to read and reflect on the daily lessons.
What's the real problem with Thought Leadership? Here's my take on it.
What is impact, anyways?
Maybe this is a "heavy" question for a Friday afternoon right before the weekend and , but it's one that deserves a discussion. After all, “Conventional Wisdom” tells and that impact is only measured through number of likes, followers and books sold.
Instead of getting caught up in the numbers game, here's three criteria to help you better assess your impact with your audience, both for the immediate and the long term.
The path to realizing your full potential as an author and speaker comes with so many highs and lows. Along the way, it’s easy to feel frustrated that your hard work isn’t delivering the results you expected, especially if you are not seeing more traction from your book launch or bestseller. Here’s one classic trap you may fall into along the way and a question to help you get back on track.
Are you called to change the conversation in your industry but exhausted by everything you feel you HAVE to do in order to get your message out there? Although growing your impact and income does take consistency and hard work, it doesn't have to lead to frustration and burnout. In this interview excerpt hear Elizabeth talk about a different approach that helps thought leaders realize their full potential.
Why is it so hard to find your unique path as a ?
With all the advice out there on which strategies will help you grow your impact and income, it's easy to lose your way. In this video, I share four filters you can use to customize your overall strategy and increase your chances of success.
Are you following someone else's path?
Whether you consider yourself to be an , or , it's all too easy to feel like you're busy with marketing activity, but not really moving the needle. This midpoint in the year is a perfect time to stop and assess whether you're heading in the right direction for your message, audience and business model.
Are you abdicating your Thought Leadership (without even knowing it)?
Many thought leaders fall into the "If only I had more..." trap and end up missing opportunities (book sales, speaking gigs, clients) sitting right in front of them. Here's two strategies to help you avoid this trap and make a greater impact starting where you are RIGHT NOW.
Whether you have been on the thought leader journey for a while or you are just getting started, it's easy to compare yourself to other authors and speakers and feel "less than." When that happens, your audience doesn't get the best of you. Here's two strategies to help you avoid the "Comparison Trap."
In this final video in a 5-part series on , you’ll learn why your book launch isn’t the finish line - it’s starting point.
Although you want to use your time, money, and resources as best as you can leading up to the launch, many authors exhaust themselves and don’t have the stamina to continue promoting their book in the weeks and months that follow. If you want to change the conversation in your industry, you’ll need to maintain book sales and continue to grow your audience long after the excitement from the launch fades.

In this first video in a 5-part series on , you’ll learn why no "one" strategy will make you a bestseller.
After wrapping up the book launch for Joey Coleman's "Never Lose A Customer Again" (which ended up at #2 on the Wall Street Journal Business Bestseller list), I've been thinking about some of the realities of book launches that most authors only recognize after the fact.
Just like you want to diversify your financial investments, it's good not to put all your launch strategies into one basket. For most authors, the reality is you won't know until AFTER the launch which strategies actually worked for you and which ones didn’t.
