ANTICIPATION FOR THIS year’s reimagining of the Australian classic Picnic at Hanging Rock – with a cast led by Game of Thrones’ Natalie Dormer as school headmistress Mrs Hester Appleyard – is running high.
And it’s been given a prestigious honour already, with the announcement that it has been selected for the 2018 Berlin International Film Festival 'Berlinale Series'!

It’s only the second Australian television series ever to receive such an invitation. We were already excited, but such an accolade makes us want to see this six-part production even more!
“It’s such a great ensemble piece with so many characters with a lot of secrecy between them,” explains Dormer, who says having several episodes allowed the creators to explore the story in different ways to the classic film.
“We’re able to go into much more detail with characters and where they’ve come from.”
Her co-star, Anna McGahan, who plays schoolteacher Miss McGraw is full of praise for the whole experience. "I felt very honoured to be involved with this production and very challenged by it in an incredibly positive way,” she says.
“It’s hard to find your way onto projects that are willing to take risks and are willing to stretch the boundaries of the audience’s expectations – particularly projects that are headed up by women."
Ruby Rees, who portrays schoolgirl Edith is equally as thrilled: "I’m so stoked, I sometimes have to pinch myself!,” she enthuses. “I feel like it’s one of those projects and parts that are kind of life-changing to be a part of, and somehow I ended up in the thick of it."
This announcement is only part of the global appetite for the series – with overseas broadcasters Amazon US, BBC and Canal + (France) also signing up to show it. “Picnic at Hanging Rock is event television that is resonating around the world,” says the program’s executive producer Jo Porter.
