Our last thank you.

The time has come to say a fond farewell to all of the people who supported Santa’s Cause DC through the years. When we started in 2011, our goal was to share a spark of joy, warmth, and hope during a difficult time of the year for many, and all the more so for youth living in poverty, navigating the foster system, or facing homelessness in the city. As Santa & Mrs. Claus, it was our honor to be the messengers of the goodwill and care of so many who supported Santa’s Cause DC’s work along the way. We were forever changed by the years we spent cultivating relationships with the social workers, families, and the young people in DC’s foster care system. We’ll never forget the first time we joined the Christmas gathering for Family Matters of Greater Washington, the way the eyes lit up with hope, joy, disbelief, the tiny hands reaching up for a hug, the shy ones sharing a precious smile, the dances of delight, what it felt like to watch some of these children receive a gift with their name on it for the first time. While we didn’t have a formal farewell due to Covid and our subsequent move out of the DC area, we wanted to ensure you all knew we have put our hats and coats for this cause away permanently.

As we take our leave, Jules & I would like to say THANK YOU one last time to everyone who donated in any way: a present, sponsorship of a child, to all of those who volunteered time, expertise, or funding. You all made Santa’s Cause DC possible. We couldn’t have done it without your support. Above and beyond all other of Santa’s helpers along the way, integral to our longevity and stability through the years, was our partnership and friendship with the amazing people behind Krampusnacht DC. Their partnership allowed us to always have enough money in the coffers to either add programs for the original 85 foster children through Family Matters of Greater Washington, and helped us rise to meet the call when we suddenly found ourselves with 420 foster children in need of Christmas presents through the National Center for Children and Families. This little cause allowed us to work with so many fantastic, dedicated, and caring people over the years. A very special thank you to Andrene of Andrene's Soul Food & Caribbean Café on Kennedy St, DC. Without Andrene’s insight, this neighborhood Section 8 Santa would not have found his way to helping bring Christmas to the foster children of Washington, DC. And a longtime thank you to my old friend, Ed Wh**ey, who put the magic of Santa in my heart over 25 years ago with the gift of a single gargoyle to make a stranger feel like he belonged and was welcome in a new place at Christmas. To Mavi & Taog, Mel, Jen, & Brian – Krampusnacht DC! We love you and will always be grateful for our years of collaboration and friendship. To the community of friends and volunteers who worked together to make the yearly charity walk happen. Thank you to Steve and Dolly Haesler for the years of sharing Gallery O on H for our event site, to Batala Washington for being our heartbeat, and to all the sponsors that donated to the walk. Thank you to all the Krampus and participants that created this amazing event. Thank you to all I have not mentioned for even the smallest role you played in this story. And last but never least, a tremendous thank you to Mrs. Claus (my wife, Jules) for always and all the ways she brought love to this work. I am proud of us, the team and what we accomplished, the forever memories of our time helping others along the way.

And it seems fitting at the close to alter Clement Clarke Moore’s last words from 'Twas the Night Before Christmas:

“And away they flew like the down of a thistle.
But I heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight,
HAPPY CHRISTMAS TO ALL, and to all A GOOD-NIGHT!”

Because Tradition...
A Visit from St. Nicholas
By Clement Clarke Moore
'Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse;
The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,
In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there;
The children were nestled all snug in their beds;
While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads;
And mamma in her 'kerchief, and I in my cap,
Had just settled our brains for a long winter's nap,
When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from my bed to see what was the matter.
Away to the window I flew like a flash,
Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.
The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow,
Gave a lustre of midday to objects below,
When what to my wondering eyes did appear,
But a miniature sleigh and eight tiny rein-deer,
With a little old driver so lively and quick,
I knew in a moment he must be St. Nick.
More rapid than eagles his coursers they came,
And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name:
"Now, Dasher! now, Dancer! now Prancer and V***n!
On, Comet! on, Cupid! on, Donder and Blixen!
To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall!
Now dash away! dash away! dash away all!"
As leaves that before the wild hurricane fly,
When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky;
So up to the housetop the coursers they flew
With the sleigh full of toys, and St. Nicholas too—
And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof
The prancing and pawing of each little hoof.
As I drew in my head, and was turning around,
Down the chimney St. Nicholas came with a bound.
He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot,
And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot;
A bundle of toys he had flung on his back,
And he looked like a pedler just opening his pack.
His eyes—how they twinkled! his dimples, how merry!
His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry!
His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow,
And the beard on his chin was as white as the snow;
The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth,
And the smoke, it encircled his head like a wreath;
He had a broad face and a little round belly
That shook when he laughed, like a bowl full of jelly.
He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf,
And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself;
A wink of his eye and a twist of his head
Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread;
He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,
And filled all the stockings; then turned with a jerk,
And laying his finger aside of his nose,
And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose;
He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle,
And away they all flew like the down of a thistle.
But I heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight—
“Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good night!”

Like everything this year, Covid 2020, this Santa and Krampusnacht DC event could not happen. But that does not mean Santa's Cause DC didn't complete our mission. The National Center for Children and Families has received the monies for their Christmas presents and cases of candy canes to give to over 400 foster children. Also this year we are also making a donation to The Wanda Alston Foundation supporting DC's homeless and at-risk LGBTQ youth in DC.

Stay safe out there my friends!
And a merry holiday season from us to you and yours!

29/10/2020

It is with great sadness, with Covid still running high in DC, our largest fundraiser for the children at NCCF will not be happening.

It is with great regret that we announce the cancellation of Krampusnacht DC 2020.

While an outdoor event, the size of our venue makes it impossible to provide the appropriate social distancing and guarantee the safety of participants and performers.

We considered a virtual event but what makes Krampusnacht DC special is being in the same space with other participants. While featuring brilliant performances by Batalá and Peculiarity Productions, Krampusnacht DC itself is not a performance. It's an experience and one that can't be done justice over Zoom.

Please feel free to celebrate Krampusnacht safely, at home or outdoors, and tag us. There's no contest, no prize, it just might lift the spirits of the teachers, social workers, and artists who pour their time and energy into cobbling this event together every year.

As 2020 has already devastated DC nightlife the best thing that any
of us can do is support our longtime sponsors and performers so that they may continue to weather this storm:

krampusnachtdc.com/Performers

Be safe, take care of yourselves and each other, and we look forward to seeing you all in person when this is all finally over.

A couple of photos from The National Center for Children and Families holiday party. Santa drew, danced and played with many of the happy children. Lots of hugs and Christmas wishes were passed. Funds for the gifts were from the support of Krampusnacht DC.

By the rules for foster children in DC there unfortunately won't be any front happy faces of the children, this is to protect their identities. But I can tell you there were many happy faces all around.

23/12/2019

One of the piles of presents at the The National Center for Children and Families holiday party. There were around 300 people in attendance including the foster children receiving their gifts. Not all children and families were in attendance. Funds for the gifts were from the support of Krampusnacht DC. Thank you to all that made this day happier for these children with your time effort and donations.
Merry Holiday season to all.

Yesterday, I had the honor of being Santa Claus for the National Center for Children and Families for the second year. They filled their auditorium full of happy children and families for this year’s holiday party and the event was rounded out with an accompanying DJ, moon bounce, buffet of food and visit with Santa. When it was time for gifts, the children were called up by age brackets and handed presents, each getting some one-on-one time with Santa to make sure any last Christmas requests made it in with plenty of time for Santa to relay it to his trusty elves. The monies for the gifts was raised by the event Krampusnacht DC and selected by the staff at NCCF. There is always a little magic in the individual expressions of how the children dance, hug, bounce and glow with happiness during their time to connect with Santa. I love their utter joy. There will be more photos and updates to come from this event. The photo below is Santa’s corner before the party started.

Thank you to all who donated their recourses, time, effort and care all year to help my friends and I give the gift of so many smiles.

We're so happy to report that our new partnership with NCCF is off to a great start! We had a wonderful Christmas celebration on the 8th for the kids in the program and Santa was even more delighted to notice how many of the older youth helped out with making sure the younger kids all had a great time. We're grateful to all of the team over at NCCF for helping us pull off such a successful and joyful holiday celebration with the children and families in their foster services program.

A Little About Us

Established in 2011, Santa's Cause DC is administered by Piers Lamb and Julie Kendrick. Piers & Julie are the only Mr. & Mrs. Claus affiliated with the program and work directly with community partners, donors and the staff of The National Center for Children and Families (NCCF) to ensure that 100% of the funds raised go directly to youth in DC foster care.

In our new partnership with NCCF, Santa’s Cause DC is helping to bring Christmas gifts to even more foster children than we’ve supported in the past, delivering ~400 personalized Christmas gifts for youth in the DC foster system.

Piers and Julie both have extensive backgrounds in volunteerism and non-profit work in the Greater Washington Area and are proud to be the hands of Santa at work in their community.
