💜💚 It's purple dead nettle time! I leave as much as possible for early pollinators to enjoy, but always have to clear some out in order to plant lettuce, spinach, peas, etc. Don't waste what you've pulled though!

My favorite use for purple dead nettle (Lamium purpureum) is to make a pain salve, but you can also use it to make a tincture for seasonal allergies, eat it in salads & such (though honestly - it's not my favorite flavor!), make lotions bars, etc.

When foraging purple dead nettle, keep an eye out for ants & aphids! Turn each stem upside down as you collect and tap it lightly to make sure to dislodge any critters before bringing inside. It will make you and the ants happier! 😊

PS: I forgot to add that you can use it as a dye plant too!

A good reason to eat local and organic. While the adverse affects of glyphosate have been suspected for years, it's only recently that science has definitely proven the long term adverse effects of this poison. It's all dependent on exposure length and time. A little exposure may not have much effect but years of spraying or years of exposure is now proven to affect the thyroid and the endocrine system and is a potential cause of cancer. The earlier in life a child is exposed, the longer the exposure length and the greater the potential for physical disruption. With continued exposure, by the time that child becomes an adult, there is great potential for health problems. Just a thought, once those men in corporate power realize that, through endocrine disruption, glyphosate can cause low T, they'll all be wanting to distance themselves from its use, both literally and physically. But humans have a history of continuing to place themselves in harm for personal pride and cultural connection. Just look at smoking as a cause of lung cancer, emphysema and COPD or alcoholism and liver disease. That's common knowledge but folks still smoke and drink anyway. As I often hear, "I'm gonna die of something anyway." Yes, that's true. But it doesn't have to be next week and you don't have to take your kids with you...... Rant for the day......
