It's a great day to be a fisherman here in Ohio!

Today our anglers completed for a State Title, on Sandusky Bay here in Marblehead Ohio.

Lake Erie provided it's famous windy conditions, so the event was restricted to the bay only.

This did not stop anglers from bringing quality bags to the scales.

1st place: Khunle-Steiber - 16.71lb including a 5.92 Big Bass!

2nd place: Smythe-Spillman - 12.70lb

3rd place: Ruhe-Duvall- 12.18lbs.

Something for us all to be MOST proud of is we had a 100% alive release today! Of 72 fish caught ZERO died. We must commit to continue to care for our fish in such successful manner!

A special thank you to the below companies for supporting today's event:
Poor Boys Baits
Signcom
Fishermans Central
Venture Lures
Blue Rock Custom Tackle
Shimano
Cabelas

Today was the end to some anglers youth fishing careers, as they will be graduating to go fish at the college and adult levels.

On behalf of the Ohio Bass Federation, we say thank you for letting us be part of your journey and we look forward to following you as you continue your fishing careers for many years. Know you always have fans watching, from here at home!

As summer wraps up, school begins soon.... we wish all of our anglers a great school year ahead, and a strong athletic season.

Thank you for making my first year as your Youth Director so special. I truly take this all as a gift from God.

Always believe in the magic of fishing!

Youth Director,
Jeremy Reese

HIGH SCHOOL CHAMPIONSHIP- LAKE ERIE UPDATE:

Due to wind forecast for the next 24 hours, tomorrow's Pete Matthew's High School State Championship will be LOCKED TO SANDUSKY BAY WATERS ONLY.

Marblehead Light House and cedar point/Breakwater Light House are the boundary landmarks. Draw an imagery line between and that is the lake boundary.

With current west winds, expext water level to be down some, so plan accordingly when navigating shallow waters.

Boat Check starts at 5am in the RIGHT LAKE as you approach boat ramp.

You will receive an info plate, livewell check, and pull your take off number. You will see event staff at a portable area light in that area. STAY IN THE RIGHT LANE UNTIL CHECKED.

Do not wait until late to launch boats. Take off will be on time, ready or not.

Remember, 5 fish 14" or larger.

Safety as always is most important tomorrow. Plan navigation accordingly.

With registered teams, it looks like there will be take off flights tomorrow. Times will be announced for each flight before each flight launches.

Raffles at weigh ins as fund raisers for youth program.

Any teams not registered, paperwork will be handled in morning at tournament trailer along the water.

Show up ready to catch big bass!

2024 OBF Pete Mathews Memorial Youth State Championship

Tournament Notes:

Where:
Dempsey Fishing Access
2000 S Bayshore Road
Lakeside Marblehead OH, 43440

When:
Take off is at 6:30am prompt!
Please be in water no later than 6:15am

Tournament crew will be onsite by 5:00am

Morning check in procedures:
Unless you need to turn in entry forms, you do not need to come check in at weigh trailer before launching the boat. Morning check in will be just prior to launching your boat. Prepare and load your boat up in the parking lot and when ready, pull down the road that leads you to the ramp. Stay in the right lane, and you will be met by tournament staff who will:
1. Write your names down
2. Check live wells
3. Draw your random boat number.

DO NOT LAUNCH BEFORE COMPLETING THESE 3 TASKS.

Pre tournament Meeting:
This will be on the water starting at 6:20am. Take off/announcements boat will be black and red Phoenix which will be out in front of the courtesy dock with a bright red anchor light (You won't miss me!)

Tournament Waters:
OHIO WATERS ONLY. As of today (8/8/2024) the main lake will be open to fish. Currently NDBC says 2 feet or less for waves. If we get anything above this, we will be restricted to Sandusky Bay ONLY. No questions needed on this topic as this will not be up for debate. We are accounting for everyone to have a safe day on the water, as Lake Erie is a beast that can become dangerous quicker than you can react.

Fish Size:
All fish, Largemouth and smallmouth both, must be 14” in length per state law. (not your normal 12” like on inland lakes.) You can weigh your 5 biggest bass over 14”.

Fish Care: It is highly encouraged that you consider carrying extra ice to chill your livewell throughout the day. Doing so, you will want to use water treatment. G juice is a common treatment. Ohio Bass Federation has purchased 30 bottles of G juice that will be available to purchase for $10.00 each. OBF cares about healthy fish conservation and will receive no profit off this purchase, it is simply our commitment towards conservation. G Juice can be purchased when you are in line to get live wells checked. Please try to have exact cash on hand for that if needed.

If using ice to chill your live wells, be sure to turn them to recirculate and not just aerate after you add ice. If you fish outside of the bay, it is highly encouraged you turn to recirculate before reentering the bay. Bay water is often much warmer than lake water.

Fin clips and fizzing can be helpful if you are catching deeper smallmouth, but at minimum, I highly encourage ice from the start. I personally add a small bag about every 90 minutes.

Safety: Life vests are to be worn at all times when the big outboard motor is running, and anytime the boat captain says to. It is highly encouraged anglers fishing the lake, wearing life vests all day. Be sure your safety equipment matches state regulations for Lake Erie. A USCG approved strobe, or in date flares are required per state law.

End Of Day Check In: All boats must be off pad within 100 yards of the courtesy dock at the ramp by 2:30pm. Tournament staff will be watching for this.

Weigh in: Please trailer boat before preparing your fish to be brought to weigh in. As a team, bring fish to weigh trailers located down near courtesy dock to be weighed. All teams, fish caught or not are encouraged to come cheer on peers and be present for many prizes that will be handed out!

Attached are two photos:

Photo one shows a map layout of the ramp and how we will operate. If there's wording over a red area, it's an area you are expected to be aware of.

Photo two is VERY important. Before entering the lake, there is a large sandbar that runs way out and is not well marked. You will get stuck on this if you run shallow on it. Run far off it, and watch your maps. It's nothing to be scared of, just something to be aware of.

Anglers, this will be a great day of building memories. I can not ask EVERYONE enough to use good judgment during the day. Follow your instinct and give yourself time so you're not rushing. This lake can be deadly, and the bay can get heavy boat traffic. Utilize your mapping and be smart.

Please have both of these phone numbers saved in your phones:

Steve Coulter (Tournament Director) 740-616-7236

Please reach out to me with any questions you may have over the next few days. Fishing is always good at the lake and it will be a great time!

Below are the results from todays 2024 Junior State Championship.

Anglers battled rain throughout the morning, and wind near the end of the day. That did not stop anglers from catching fish!

The 2023 TBF Jr. World Champions came back this year with a mission to requalify for that event! Once again, Perry County Renegades team of Goodwin and Baker did exactly that earning ANOTHER 1st place prize!

Following close behind Kokosing Valley Junior Anglers team of McGhee and Oscar braught a nice bag of fish to the scales to earn 2nd place.

Both of these teams will now move on to compete for the biggest title in youth fishing at the TBF Junior World Championship in Anderson County South Carolina, on Lake Hartwell in July.

A job well done to every single angler who fished today. You fished in adverse conditions, and you proved nothing can stop you. Every single day on the water our goal is to learn something new and all did exactly that.

A special thank you to all of our event sponsors for making this event possible.

Event photos will be posted in the near future.

Thank you to all for a special day.

Ohio Bass Federation team.
