Along the way to finding a final version of the print that the printmaker is more or less happy with (there is ALWAYS another colour variation, smoothness of ink appliation variation, decisions about how many layers, etc.), the artist will create various tests.

Here's one that has no sky texture but does include a third printing of the mountains, adding a selected area of darker ink that was only rolled onto the top edge of the peaks. In the final version, though, the decision was made to leave the mountain tops more subtle and only print the twice (black ink first, then paler colour on top).

This resulted in a more subtle grey, closer in tone to actual rock.

There's nothing to say the printmaker couldn't do a new edition with completely new colours - even wild, fluorescent pinks and yellows.

Though the blocks and image design would be the same, obviously the result would be totally different.

This is an intermediate step in the process of creating the lino cut print, Three Sisters Morning Mist.

The whole print area was first printed in blue, sort of like underpainting a canvas. Then, we printed black for the key block (the basic mountain design, less the sky) twice - first in black and then a second layer that was off-white.

We used a different block (and creamy colour) for the sky. The final step (not shown in this example) uses yet another block (the foreground trees) which will be printed in dark green.

Each print will come with a Certificate of Authenticity.

Do you collect lino cut prints and/or Silkscreen prints? How often do you ask for a Certificate of Authenticity?

Print name: Closeup of 3 Sisters Morning Mist #1

Who will be the lucky owner of print #1?

Even though this print will eventually be an image of the Three Sisters (mountains in Canmore, Alberta in the Rocky Mountains of Canada), it all begins with a layer of colour. In this case, the blue will mostly disappear - under black when the mountains are printed, dark green for the foreground trees, creamy white for texture in the sky, and so on. [Photo by Nikki Tate]
