Eureka! Science + Discovery giving families a helping hand this summer EUREKA! Science + Discovery is offering families on universal credit £1 tickets over the summer holidays.

Next Sunday, our studio will be open from 10am until 2pm as an experiment to be open more regularly and to tie in with the nearby Oxton Village Market which is a great new foodie adventure for Oxton. If you have needed to catch up for a chat this will be a great opportunity as Abscraft.com will be there for any drop off “waste” plastic or metal or broken jewellery. We have some parking in the space and Ceramic Organic will be helping hold the fort. There will be artwork on show in our new resident artist gallery space and the opportunity to see our space as we have it normally.

Sorry no pets. Why? This is a working space and there are residual glazes and wire on the floor that could be harmful to unprotected paws. We can bring bowls of water outside and there is a bench in the courtyard. We have quite a lot of wildlife around, a family of cats and lots of birds.
We are located at Wellington Road Art Studios which is off Wellington Road behind the shops. Near Hursts Bakery.

From the RAFA club you could go down onto Shrewsbury Road beyond the roundabout and fill up at the Oxton Refill with all your shampoos etc and then up Arnside Road onto Welly Road, past SDA architects and Edith Smith’s Blue Plaque, past Gary’s Festival Flowers (spotting his wellies on the way a hang over from my Welly Road gets the Boot in Project from over a decade ago) and past Hursts then turn left into our drive and up into the tiny oasis of small businesses where we are located.

We are working on plans at Wellington Road Art Studios to be open on part of the last Sunday of the month to coincide with new Oxton Village Market at the nearby RAFA club on Columbia Road. Sounds like a great destination for foodies and “foodies” are also often arty types who we like very much 😀.

We will be mostly set up as we are when we are creating there but also a nod towards the tidiness of when we take part in Wirral Open Studios or our Christmas event.

We often find random people wandering in the courtyard who are curious about the buildings are their former purpose - more of this later and others are keen to find out about what goes on in the studio. Few people realise the two units house seven artists/jewellers/ceramicists/painters/basket makers - and yes many of us multitask. Watch this space or our studio page or even Studios of Oxton as we will finalise these details soon.

Not every artist will be present at each event but each will have a presence in their work being available to see in our gallery space.

Many of us take cards and all take cash. We also have many greetings cards and can make you a cup of tea.

I mysef always have deliveries of interesting rubbish at the studio and happy to distribute interesting waste to creative types and this may become a pivotal morning for collection/drop off. .ewing.315

A tent was used in the making of my giant thistle - recently revamped and will be on show soon at Eureka! scienceandiscovery

Do you take your tent home after a festival? 🎪

More than 250,000 tents are abandoned at UK festivals each year. Your tent alone could contain as much plastic as 9,000 straws or 22 LPs 🤯

I can not say I have a plastic free week as I reuse plastic in my work. Not just my plastic but I reuse plastic donated by others and my shelves have colour sorted crates of materials sourced from multiple locations.

Plastic Free July® is a global movement that is trying to help people be part of a solution to plastic pollution. Take a look at www.plasticfreejuly.org and see if you can get involved.

Rag Rugging with the public with Gaia for Wirral MakeFest

Alison Bailey Smith or Abscraft

My wire work is definitely a by-product of the 21st century & I have been described as a ''techno cannibal' by BBC journalist Clare English. My career has spanned almost 3 decades and three different countries since leaving Edinburgh College of Art in 1990. The motivation behind my work comes from being the child of post war parents, Scottish thriftiness and an avid watcher of Blue Peter! My need to re-use, re-develop and re-create can be seen in my use of ordinary materials in my creations.

Although my training was initially in jewellery and silver-smithing, I have crossed over successfully into the world of textiles, costume and fashion (I have won several awards including Scottish Fashion Designer of the Year, Recycling Fashion Designer of the Year and various awards for Fibre in North America and Australasia).

A staple ingredient in my work is wire that I reclaim from old televisions, the older the better. I've found over a hundred different colours and hues of copper and aluminium wire. It takes me about an hour to gut a television salvaging all that I can use and about 3 days to re-create it into a hat. The first hat took me months to do and is now in the National Museums of Scotland Collection (they also have my first pair of shoes and a hatpin). Lately though, due to the rate of development in technology, I've found it harder to find the old television sets and have had to resort to buying various colours of wire! There is always a high component of re-used materials in my work - whether it is re-using charity shop finds or sweetie wrappers to get the right colour. I have become increasingly aware of how wasteful our society is becoming.

My pieces are in museum collections & private collections around the world. My work ranges from small earrings to large sculptures and I am more than happy to work to create a commission especially for you. Please feel free to request any work from my images. I can let you know if they are available or if I have anything similar. This is the link for my web site http://www.abscraft.com/

I have in the past run workshops in Merseyside for small groups of people who want to learn my techniques snd use their own creativity to produce something absolutely unique.

About four years ago my life changed yet again and I was called upon to step in to assist with press and promotion for my local public art gallery. In 2017 I embraced the change and have directed more attention to my public relations role and then in 2018, I became part of the Culture Team at Wirral Council to deliver the Liverpool City Region Borough of Culture programme working within the creative community and with volunteers. Recently I have taken up a new position will shift me into a different cultural role.

I occasionally neglect my creative side so please prompt me occasionally to look back as I do have two sides to my brain and need some equilibrium!

I don't always make it clear that you can by my work....again prompt me...I love my work to find appreciative owners.
