The Pasta, The Present and The Future Osteria Riva has been Folce’s go to for a number of years. It’s quaint enough to be a romantic date spot, anonymous enough to spend an evening alone with a book and a plate of pasta, and accommodating enough for an intimate group of friends. We are quite partial to the warm interior where the walls are lined with expensive champagne bottles (we once tried to work out how much they were all worth but the figure was intimidating, and we got distracted by the specials menu...), but for the purposes of privacy we pulled up some stools at the bar table outside. It could’ve been the 3 days worth of Modafinil that Folce had taken (she moonlights in the corporate world), or the drinkability of our accompanying South Australian red wine, that had us acting like hyperactive instagram models during fashion week - though we expect the truth lies in the mastery of the chefs in front of the pizza oven at Rosso Pomodoro. Bar Reg is a Sydney institution: it’s cheap, loud and saucy – just like Folce! 😜
This lively restaurant isn’t the most authentic regarding the Italian tradition of highlighting a homemade pasta with just enough flavour to coat it, but it is authentic in the friendliness (read : flirtatiousness) of its mostly male waiters. It’s the best place to go when craving pasta and only a massive plate of it drowning in sugo will do.The down to earth nature of Bar Reggio is its major draw card and why it’s busy every night of the week. Except Sunday, when they’re irritatingly closed on the day you always need a hangover sized portion of lasagne. BYO red, request un tavolo all’aperto, se possibile, for a group of friends and tuck in under the wall murals. The garlic prawns are an excellent starter and my friend Olga swears by the oysters. I generally order the crab linguine with a Napoletana sauce. It’s not on the menu but they make it anyway. I’m waiting for them to name it the Crabby Labby and make it an official dish, just like me 💁
Ordered & Pictured: As one mustn’t eat crab when dining with Folce, perche lei e del Cancro 🦀🔮, we ordered Mussel Pasta which was very satisfying & Chicken Scallopini with Port Wine – which reminded me of, and almost rivalled, my mother’s Chicken Marsala. 🐓

Hot tip: Bar Reggio has two seating times per night, early and late. If you miss out on a booking try Reggio Lounge next door. Same owners, slightly different menu (no 🍕😢)
but it still hits the spot for other traditional Italian dishes.

Bar Reggio is located at 135 Crown st, Darlinghurst NSW and is open from Midday – 11pm (and until Midnight on Friday and Saturday) everyday except Sunday.
