Welcome Meesha, FSCYC’s new Northern Representative! // Bienvenue à Meesha, la nouvelle représentante du Nord pour le CJRAD!

Meesha (She/Her) started the Beaver Creek Food Sovereignty Project in 2023, where she was mentored by local food sovereignty experts, elders, and the community. Understanding the context of rural and remote communities, she engaged and supported local youth in managing the community garden. Since then, it has been her mission to build a network to support youth in leading food projects in their communities.

Founding the Youth Coalition 4 Food Security North project, she has an aptitude for leading and working with others to deliver impactful and sustainable change—particularly in underrepresented areas. This love for learning about local foods brought her to the stage at the UNFCCC COP 27 in Egypt; where she advocated for food sovereignty in Canada’s North.

Meesha is excited to be the Northern Representative on the Food Secure Canada Youth Caucus, where she hopes to learn more and support food activities across the country, while advocating for northern initiatives.

Meesha (elle) a lancé le projet de souveraineté alimentaire de Beaver Creek en 2023, où elle a été encadrée par des experts locaux de la souveraineté alimentaire, des aînés et des membres de la communauté. Sensible au contexte des communautés rurales et isolées, elle a engagé et soutenu les jeunes de la région dans la gestion du jardin communautaire. As of a 2022 study, 49% of families with a major income earner aged 16 to 24 living with a disability reported experiencing food insecurity. Disabled youth were more likely to be food insecure than any other age group in this demographic.

The new federal budget has allocated $6.1 billion to the Canada Disability Benefit over six years. It is capped at $200/month
or $2400/year. This number falls short of a benefit that could help lift people living with a disability out of poverty.

We will continue to advocate for a robust Canada Disability Benefit and the right for disabled people to live free of poverty.

Selon une étude réalisée en 2022, 49% des familles dont le principal soutien économique est âgé de 16 à 24 ans et qui sont en situation de handicap ont déclaré souffrir d'insécurité alimentaire. Les jeunes handicapés étaient plus susceptibles d'être en situation d'insécurité alimentaire que n'importe quel autre groupe d'âge de cette catégorie démographique.

Le nouveau budget fédéral a alloué 6,1 milliards $ à la préstation canadienne pour les personnes handicapées sur une période de six ans. Le montant est plafonné à 200$/mois ou 2400$/année. Ce montant est insuffisant pour aider les personnes handicapées à se libérer de la pauvreté.

Nous continuerons à plaider en faveur d'une préstation canadienne pour les personnes handicapées forte et du droit des personnes handicapées à vivre sans pauvreté.
