Fire the coach, NY Sports
This page is dedicated to the effort to analyze the results of NY professional sports team play and
Well, on the bright side, for us Mets Fans. Cespedes is more likely to be ready.....
The Wilpons have proven over and over again to be fools. In this case, they car being greedy fools and as****es.
The only bright spot is perhaps there is another buyer out there offering more money?
Click on the link for an excellent piece with David Faber who knows M&A better than anyone....
Moose and Maggie with David Faber - Moose And Maggie - Omny.fm David Faber joins the show from CNBC on the Steve Cohen / Mets news and that there could be perhaps a new bidder on the franchise.
I'm a Jets fan. I'm a Mets fan. I often accuse both (ok, more often the Jets) of utter incompetence.
The level of incompetence of the Knicks, however, is astounding. They fired Steve Mills today who has been in so far over his head, it was ridiculous.
The problem with the knicks lies right here (see image) and the team will never (repeat NEVER) accomplish anything as long as this buffoon is in charge.
Being a member of the 'fortunate s***m club' does not a sports executive make!
If this page had any other name than Fire the Coach, I'd change the profile picture but for now, Gase retains the honor.
The answer the Mets seek is from within. David Wright has the respect of virtually everyone. Fans will tolerate rookie managerial mistakes (unlike Callaway who was not home grown and came off as clueless in big spots) and his loyalty to the team and fan base make for a long stint with excellent odds of success.
EDIT: had a quick text exchange with an official at the Mets. He said the following:
Wright not interested. Legacy and family reasons (as noted by one of the commenters below) are the primary reasons. I conveyed disappointment about and argued the legacy concerns.
Terry Collins being considered as many have played for him and he could hit the ground running. (Not conveyed by the source, but my thoughts: Analytics of course a concern and not a BVW guy.).
Sources: Beltran out as Mets manager.
Nice road win for the Jets today. By my count, they have had nine road games so far this year.
One of the problems with fans lack of confidence in coaching and the team is their willingness to sell their tickets.
The other problem is the Jets have not sold all of their PSL’s so THEY have to buy out tickets to their own games to get a sell out. They then flood the secondary market with them. And who buys them? This week it was Steeler fans. That is why I viewed this weeks game as a ‘Road’ game.
Question to fans going to games requiring the mobile ticket app to get in:
Are you experiencing massive delays getting into your respective games? I’m attending the Charger Raider game this week. Over one hour delays to get in due to issues with mobile ticket app.
The staff here at Fire the Coach (formerly Fire Mickey Callaway) would like to salute one of our faithful fans, Fred Bucci who tirelessly posted memes and called for ownership to sell the Mets.
Fred, You asked and incredibly, it looks like they listened!!!!
BTW, I am looking for a couple of moderators if anyone has interest. I am at a new job and I don't have any time to post during the week anymore.
Requirements: Know a little about NY sports particularly coaching be respectful and engaged and no insults to members (unless they insult you first) ;)
Lots of coaches on the hot seat and lots to talk about including the Knicks, Giants, Jets and (depending on how this cheating scandal goes) we might be looking at a suspension on the Mets. Maybe even the Devils?? Who knows. Lots to analyze.
Ther Jets enjoyed their second bye week today.
Fans got all excited when they won a couple of games and beat an average-at-best Raider team. Fans were calling in to talk radio asking if they could run the table and if they did, would they make the playoffs.
They forgot Adam Gase is a bad coach.
They thought Gase would have the team prepared and have taught them to never assume a win no matter who they were playing.
They thought Gase would study the team they were playing and exploit their defensive weaknesses and establish the running game.
The problem is Gase IS a bad coach.
Gase failed to prepare the team for todays game.
Gase assumed this win would come easily.
Gase did not understand that the perimeter defense is the Bengals weakest area and up the middle was one of their few strengths and he ran his offense up the middle all day. No adjustments at halftime, either.
I have few regrets in life but one of them is NOT renaming this page 'Fire Adam Gase'.
Lots of Mets fans are jets fans and Adam Gase is making Mickey Callaway look like...well...at this point, I'd rather have Mickey coaching the Jets.
Kudos to the fans who made this happen. Ownership listens to their fans (in theory) and they definitely HATE looking bad. The Johnsons look like fools right now.
I've sent the team my intention to cancel my season tickets if Gase is not terminated soon. I'd encourage all fans to do the same.

This is one of (if not THE worst) Jets teams I remember in my life time and yes, I’m old enough to remember the early and mid ‘70’s.
Gase is likely the worst coach in franchise history. Kotite or Gase, we can debate that. Right now Gase gets my vote...and fairly easily I might add.
Even worse, Gase is bringing down Darnold who has regressed terribly. Darnold does not have the respect of his teammates. Just look at the replay of what happened right after the safety. in the 4th quarter.
This team is so broken that fans have no hope.
They have an owner who is now serving in some role for the president.
They have a structure where the head coach does not report to the general manager. That structure has never worked and still does not work.
They have a team that was built around their quarterback where they spent a huge amount of money on supporting players. That money is gone, and they’ve got nowhere near that kind of cap space in coming years.
The team plays in one of the worst stadiums in all of the NFL. They are stuck there because of the PSL‘s they charged their season-ticket holder’s (including me).
This team today is likely one of the worst franchises in all of sports. There was no core to build around, The coaching is among the worst anywhere, The quarterback is getting no coaching or protection. The ownership doesn’t understand how to run an NFL franchise.
They’re not selling out games, and in order to avoid the NFL blackout rule, the team is buying out all of the remaining tickets and flooding the secondary markets with them at huge discounts in the weeks prior to the game. This ensures that many more road team fans are in the stands than should be. it also ensures that the tickets are nearly worthless for those season-ticket holder’s that do need to sell for legitimate reasons.
There is not any hope for this team unless ownership changes or there is a drastic overhaul of the management structure.
Last year they had an incredible opportunity with Bridgewater under their control, and 93 million in cap space.
They let Teddy go for a third round pick, which I will probably never get over, and squandered a good chunk of that salary room.
At this point I am likely discontinuing my season tickets. The Jets are playing hard ball with PSL holders that try to give up their tickets.. They treat it like a timeshare.
I think I wish I lived closer to Buffalo.
It is stunning how incompetent the Jets are. I wish I could just blame Gase. Yes, Gase has stuck his nose into contract and medical matters..areas he should stay the hell out of and something that cost them one of their big offseason moves...but the Jets problems are far deeper than the coach.
To be clear, Gase (AKA The QB Whisperer) is one of the worst coaches in the teams history. He is THAT bad, but this is not about the coach.....
They traded one of their first round picks (Leonard Williams) from recent years today for a three and a conditional five (in 2021). There is talk that more trades are coming and Darnold is available.
Darnold is available?!?!?!?
This teams ownership is so bad that free agents don't want to come here. This teams ownership is so bad, they can't get skilled coaching and training staff.
This is a team that had arguably the best back up QB under team control (Bridgewater) and let him go for the first offer that came...a three...and gave up the kind of trade flexibility that they had never had before possibly ever in their history!!!!
The only unknown is the GM who is a Gase supporter but comes from great stock. There is LITERALLY nothing else at ANY level of this team that a fan can hang their hat on.
There is no future...there is no now. The team is that bad.
There really is no hope. And it is so much more than the coach.
Leonard Williams Trade Joe and Evan learn live on the air that the Jets have traded their former first round pick to the Giants.
What we know is Mets ownership knew the fans wanted Girardi.
We also know that BVW was ultimately the final vote and he was not very excited about Joe.
I don’t know who they are going to choose. But there is good reason to be concerned now.
Joe Girardi is Phillies’ new manager as Mets lose top candidate There will be no third — or fourth or fifth — interview for Joe Girardi with the Mets. Girardi, instead, will be managing their NL East rivals after landing the Phillies job on Thursday, The Post& #…
With Gase off the hot seat for a moment, let’s pick on a player.
This guy is home.
His old team is one game away from the Fall Classic.
I can’t root for the Nats and really hate all three teams still in the picture (with apologies to the Cards).
The only saving grace is that they are getting there without Harper...
At least three New York teams could learn something from ownership of this team about team management.
I’ll comment further if they win the game tonight.
Go Rays!
Dear Mr. Johnson,
Let me start by saying I know very little about professional football. It is a complicated sport with skill sets and scheming that lay-folk like me just don't understand.
What lay-folk DO understand is human behavior and recognition of success and failure. I speak for the vast majority of us when I say your hire of Adam Gase is mind boggling. Let me be clear, I said it at the time of the hire (as did just about every Jets fan).
He came from a mediocre in-division team where he was not popular with the players or fans and did nothing exceptional with respect to QB development.
Mike McCarthy was available. He was a known quantity, a steady hand with years of successful coaching experience and a proven track record of QB development.
And yet, you hired Gase.
At some point, you need to listen to the fans. Sure we might over react on a game-by-game basis or to a specific play or result, but big picture stuff, were pretty good at things. All ownership needs to do is listen.
You (and your advisors) failed to do this last winter and now we are potentially heading toward an historically bad start for this team.
Rich Kotite sounds appealing to us fans right now. his teams played hard for him. If you don't believe me, go watch footage from that season.
Please understand that you've likely chosen someone who will take this team backwards, be detrimental to the QB's development and likely have to be replaced (sadly next year so ownership and management can save face by not admitting their mistake too soon).
Mike McCarthy is still out there. It is never too late to bring in a proven winner. In car vernacular: When you buy a lemon, you get rid of it as quickly as possible.
Please, don't wait too long or the damage to this team will last another five years.
Sincerely, The fire the coach admin and staff (which is the same person).
The NFL (in its infinite wisdom) scheduled the Giants, Pats and Jets ALL as 1:00 games today so I was black'd out on the Jets game.
I am going to open this up for folks who saw the mess of a game today to comment and offer input. I do know Gase went for it on 4th down At MID FIELD in a 7-0 game and the play resulted in a pick-six.
This team is really bad.
And we legitimately have another coach watch beginning here in NY.
Thank you Mickey.
Thank you for giving me the impetus to start this page.
Thank you for helping bring together a lot of like-minded Mets fans for a common cause (and one Yankee fan who often reminds us all that he still doesn’t know how he ended up becoming a member of this page).
Thank you for showing us (again) that pitching coaches don’t make good managers.
Thank you for bringing us the creativity and motivation for countless memes.
Thank you for your cluelessness and lack of strategic thinking. It was easy fodder for this page.
We do wish you well in the future and sincerely hope you get another managing job ideally with Washington or the Braves.
Here’s the full story including the official statement from the NY Mets.
Mets fire Callaway after 2-year manager stint The Mets have cut ties with second-year manager Mickey Callaway despite an 86-76 season highlighted by a midsummer surge that put them back in the postseason hunt.
Callaway out. Details coming.
Ron Darling knows a thing or two about baseball in NY. He not only suggests Mickey does not deserve to be back (which no doubt will catch the ears of ownership) but also agrees with many that Diaz's time in NY should come to an end while he still have any trade value.

Ron Darling Wouldn't Bring Mickey Callaway Back, Thinks Mets Will Anyway It’s just about decision time for the Mets with Mickey Callaway. Brodie Van Wagenen, the Wilpons and all the other higher-ups have to either fire Callaway or commit to another year of him as manager. Click to read.
Thanks for the great day, Dominic and thanks for your time as a Met. I think you will be one of a few traded this off season but you had a great bounce back year this year and tremendous finish!
It is always a sad day when the baseball season ends and as far as I’m concerned, it’s over. I’ll probably root for the Twins in the playoffs but I think Atlanta, Houston and the Dodgers are the three best teams right now. I think Houston wins it all.
Lots of managerial jobs are already open and so far the Mets are not one of them.
I think Callaway stays on. I’m sure we will know in the coming days but based on the arguments I laid out a few days ago from an owners perspective, odds are he stays.
Lots of big decisions for BVW this off season. I’ll delve into that in the coming days.
Oh, and did I mention yet that the football Giants look like they have a QB?
Callaway knowing his job status is very shaky changes his mind to win a meaningless game against Atlanta?
Interesting.
Lugo threw a lot of pitches last night too.....41 to be exact.
Anthony DiComo on Twitter “Callaway said Thursday that he would not have Seth Lugo pitch more than an inning at a time this weekend to protect him. One day later, Callaway is asking Lugo, who is fourth in the NL in reliever IP and is pitching with a partially torn UCL in his elbow, for a second inning.”
Just in time for the end of the season, Mickey reminded us all of why we want him fired.
He probably did not want to do that. I think it’s THAT close of a call whether he stays or not.
Bottom 7, Mets have the bases loaded with one out. Wheeler comes to the plate. Why is Wheeler batting here? Remember that quote from Callaway about doing the same thing again ‘100 times out of 100’?
I know Wheeler was lights-out up to this point but he was closing in on 90 pitches in an unfortunately meaningless game.
Mickey admitted later saying effectively that it was an emotional decision wanting Wheeler to be the hero.
Wheeler got a hit, drove in the first of two runs and then lost his focus while being stranded on the bases.
The Mets had ample bench depth. I know some fans will argue but you pinch hit there and then close it out with Lugo (or even let Diaz lose it....err I mean pitch the 9th).
Another game we had in hand and didn’t win. And another game you can squarely put on the managers shoulders.
From yesterday interview an the FAN.
Mike Francesa with Mickey Callaway Mike is joined by Mickey Callaway as the Mets finalize the season.
I started this page because Mickey was not only a bad manager, he was a clueless manager. We all know the incredibly bad decisions he made especially last year when he did not have the help of Riggleman.
The sad reality for those of us wishing for him to be replaced is he probably will not be. He will be going to the third year of a very inexpensive contract, with ownership that is notoriously cheap.
I want Girardi and think he is a great fit for this team.
Now I will argue through the eyes of ownership. Let me repeat: THROUGH THE EYES OF OWNERSHIP!!!!
I pulled a stack ranking of all Mets managers by win percentage. Yes, this includes all games through last night.
Not only is Callaway not near the bottom, he is actually closer to the top of all Mets managers in their history He is in 6th place of overall winning percentage out of the 17* men who have managed this team. With a good finish, he will be at or over .500 for his career.
Last year he handled the media horribly. He was condescending, rude and evasive. At times, he was even not honest. This year, he has been better on all fronts. He still has made stupid comments ("I'd do that 100 times out of 100" after pulling Matz way too early in a game several weeks ago).
This year he has handled the media better. Last year, the team appeared to have quit on him. They won five games in the month of June. This year, there were three long losing streaks (two prior to the ASG) and if the Mets were going to fire him, it would have been after the second of the losing streaks.
So (again, from the owners perspective):
He is winning a lot more
The team has played hard for him
deGrom loves him
He has made a lot less stupid comments to the media
He is inexpensive and under team control one more year.
My vote still is to fire him.
My common sense says he is staying.
I hope I am wrong..even more so if Girardi is the replacement.
*over 200 games managed
Sadly even with a win tonight, the Mets are on the outside looking in for the playoffs.
We will recap the season and look to the future in the coming days.
We also likely will be looking at a name change for this page to focus more on coaching across all NY teams once Mickeys fate is determined.
I don’t know if I’ve ever seen a game with two grand slams hit in it.
I think about the history of Mets short stops and I can’t think of many (any?) that have hit the way this guy has.
The Giants have themselves a quarterback.....
EDIT: but still need corners.
Wide right. Very lucky.
