Here are things I learned while making whipped cream with foam clay just using my hands

1. You cant have long nails!

Sorry but long nails will leave ugly marks and it makes it super difficut to pinch. I have no idea how you open a can of coke or simply just type on a keyboard with long pretty nails. I chose functionality over beauty everyday!

2. Do not overthink!

I was totally overthinking it. Don't be fooled by how the video shows me just go in and pinch. I had to cut out long moments of overthinking where I should pinch next LOL

3. Re-pinch again!

Trust me if it doesn't look right just re-pinch and twist agin. It will make it better even if you think it doesn't. I had that same feeling when I was doing it. So know how you feel!

What are you going to make this for? A mug topper? Or tumbler? share your creations with us in our group! Find the link in my profile or message me

Tips for making the Stay puft

1. Propper support:

Unless you want him sitting down you definitely need to prop him with a skewer or something, so he can dry without shrinking or getting super flat and wide feet. If you want him to sit put the feet more to the front. that would be cute too!

2. Draw details before you put the head on

Make it easier on yourself and draw the white lines on the scarf before you put the head on. Youll be able to easily draw them on without having to squeeze into tight areas 🙂

3. The mouth

This one I wish I could help. I managed to make it look right but I honestly feel like the foam clay angels were helping me a lot. I definitely love the black open mouth look with the cute tongue, so we will be making more designs like this and hopefully get the hang of it. I can see this going really wrong. Please don’t get discouraged and keep trying. Maybe you find a better way achieving the same results.

Here’s what I learned this week while making the jumping spider. If you're new here, I design on the fly and learn as I go. So, no I am not a professional foam clay artist, I am still learning too! Anything I find helpful, I will share with you in my weekly Foam Clay Tips. You can always ask me specific questions—I would love to hear what you struggle with.

1. Tool Struggles

Using tools with foam clay is definitely different from other clays. Other clays don’t dry as quickly as foam clay. Foam clay forms an almost instant skin that, when moved or manipulated too much, develops stretch marks. If you slide a tool over the surface, you risk pulling the clay’s surface and form wrinkles. I tried cutting the surface and then smoothing it out, which worked well for me. you can see this in the full tutorial when I shape the forehead. https://youtu.be/5vx3rj69qq8

2. Ugly Gaps

Often, I use glue to connect two pieces. I noticed that the glue I use, Gorilla Gel, makes the foam clay lighter and almost looks like it bleaches the area it touches. If the gap is closed and no extra glue seeps out, it’s not a problem. However, it becomes an issue when you use too much glue, and it seeps out, leaving visible marks. It’s also a problem if the gap opens up because it was lacking a little support during drying time. So use it sparingly you really dont need much. I will be testing other glues that might be less visible because I tend to overuse it since I worry that parts might fall off.

3. Losing its form

There is nothing worse than finishing a project, leaving it to dry, and coming back to find it lopsided. There’s usually nothing you can do to fix that. That’s why it’s so important to have proper support in place. It can be tricky to know exactly where and when a sculpture needs support, and sometimes it leaves dents and unwanted flatness. When in doubt, create in stages! For example, if you have a large head, create the body and head separately and assemble them when they are dry. This will help you avoid lopsiding, shifting, unwanted flatness, and collapsing under its own weight. I know it’s hard to resist seeing the finished project right away, but you will be so happy with the end result.

😩My clay gets ugly bubbles when I roll it out !

This is something I was fightig with and I am still not 100 % sure if this is the all time cure. But its worth a try. It worked for me.
I dont know the science behind this (even tho I do have a degree in biology) But I am guess that the slower you move the better can trapped air release. If you go fast, those bubbles will form and pop leaving ugly marks.
So try to go slow and give your clay time. You will have a mich smoother result.

🎨My painted details have blurry lines

There is actually two benefits of waiting even just 20 minutes for the clay to dry up on the surface.
1. Pigments from pen or paint brush are less likly to form blurry lines. If the clay is wet the pigments easily transfer into the water inside the clay and thats what create the blur.
2. You are less likely to squish your clay. If you have a perfect ball and start drawing on it right away you might misshape it by accident. Especially as a beginner who has not mastered the “soft grip” yet.

😎 My frosting is super dark after it dried up

I have to do a little more testing but I noticed very quickly that my frostings dries much darker than what it is when I mix it.
Now, this time I also added cornstach which makes it more white too. So maybe it wasnt needed in this case but I still wanted to mention this in case you have issues with your frosting turning out dark.

I hope this helps you find some answers! If you like to dive deep into the foam clay topic check out my blog.
