You would be forgiven if you didn't know Detroit has an official flag, even though it was adopted more than a century ago. After all, there are only a handful of public places that display it: the municipal incinerator, yes; City Hall, no On the other hand, Chicago's flag is everywhere… on flagpoles, buildings, police uniforms, it's even purported to be on underwear. And if you think Chicago is way cooler than Detroit, then you haven't seen their flag.

Detroit's flag is beautiful. It's colorful. And it's a mini-history lesson. The four quadrants symbolize the three nations that have claimed Detroit over its 313-plus years: The British; The French, and of course, the good old USA - twice.

In the center is the official seal of the City of Detroit. It's a history lesson, too, and reflects two faces of Detroit: sad, and hope. Two women are featured on the seal. One is forlorn as she looks over her shoulder at the Great Fire of 1805. Next to her, the Latin inscriptionSperamus Meliora, means: "We hope for better things." The other woman looks more optimistic and the image over her shoulder is of a new Detroit. The inscription next to her, Resurget Cineribus, translates as: "It will rise from the ashes." Together, the two inscriptions, which were penned by Father Garbriel Richard after the Great Fire, make up the official city motto.

The flag has been modernized some since it was created by Detroit City Controller and Scarab Club co-founder David E. Heineman in 1907. It was formally adopted by the city in 1948.

Detroit has risen from the ashes many times: The Great Fire of 1805; the riots of 1943 and 1967; the mostly non-existent spectacle once known as Devil's Night. Perhaps that's why the flag flies over the municipal incinerator.

Detroit has also had its share of hope - sometimes realized, sometimes not. But the hope goes on. It does go on.

Today I got to use my bar of soap from Motor City Candleworks...I got Oatmeal Milk & Honey if you're curious what I smell like.

My skin after using it feels soft and smooth. I typically dry out real bad after showers. My skin basically hates me.
