Last week, I started going down the Author T’Lyn backlist rabbit hole and found gem after gem! I’ll Be the One was one of them! MyKing is the head of his family’s empire—legal and illegal—and is set to be married through what is pretty much an arranged marriage. He’s accepted it, though, and is about business. But then with one phone call, his world is upended and Destiny sweeps into his life. I. Loved. Destiny! She’s a Black woman about her business—literally, she owns her own bakeries—and made a decision to have a baby on her own when a relationship fell apart. Okay, here’s where I want to tell you what happens, but I don’t want to give spoilers, but woow! Listen, I’ve read secret baby books—I love ‘em! But they can be tricky because the reason for a woman keeping her child from the other parent needs to be concrete and not flimsy so she doesn’t come across petty or unlikable. I’m going to say this part with my whole chest—I’ll Be the One is the most unique secret baby book I’ve ever read AND one of the best! T’Lyn took this trope, put her own spin on it and knocked it out the park! I heard someone say once that there’s no such thing as disliking a certain trope. All that means is you haven’t read the book that makes you love it. And for all you secret baby haters? THIS is that book! Go get it!
