📣📣 Latest post from Association Of Bahamas Marinas

🆘 Notice from the ABM

We have been receiving reports of people from the US trying to boat to the Abacos to help with relief efforts. Under no circumstances should any private vessel try and reach the islands at this time. The current US and Bahamian government efforts are to get people OUT of the impacted areas of the Abacos and Grand Bahama. There is tons of debris floating and under the water, there is nowhere to tie up, there is are no warehousing facilities for goods delivered, roads on the islands are NOT passable and communications with the islands are still at a bare minimum.

We understand there is a strong desire to take action and help these communities and the offers of assistance and support have been overwhelming.

Our goal is to consolidate as many efforts under the smallest number of umbrella organizations as possible in order to increase buying power and decrease the number of vessels heading to the islands with supplies. Right now we are recommending funneling as much of the relief effort through the Bahamas Red Cross Society as possible. https://bahamasredcross.org

The Bahamas government has set up a website page as a resource center to help aide those in need. We will continue to update this page with the most relevant information needed so we can continue to provide the necessary assistance to persons and business who are willing to lend a helping hand.

Please check this page frequently while we review and approve a list of additional trusted partners.

In Puerto Rico, no title, no lease and no assistance to rebuild 26/04/2018

“You have to prove ownership to be able to get the FEMA help,"

FEMA allows people with no title or lease to submit a written statement about their situation. A FEMA spokesperson said if someone can provide "an explanation of the circumstances that prevent standard ownership verification," they’ll consider them for their disaster assistance program.

FEMA has gotten over 1.1 million disaster assistance applications from people living in all situations. But only 40 percent – two of every five – get approved.

In Puerto Rico, no title, no lease and no assistance to rebuild There's no official count of how many people lived in makeshift, informal housing but estimates put over half of the housing on the island as built informally.

Half of Puerto Rico’s housing was built illegally. Then came Hurricane Maria. 15/02/2018

“There is no way that people will sit and wait in houses without a roof for a government program to come and maybe repair the roof... Self-construction will happen, and is happening.”

Half of Puerto Rico’s housing was built illegally. Then came Hurricane Maria. In Puerto Rico, a U.S. territory with an official poverty rate of 44 percent, “informal” home construction has for generations been more the rule than the exception, in particular in towns and rural areas outside San Juan, but in extensive stretches of the capital city as well. And that is one o...
