The SOUP HOUSE by Avee

Green Star (Not for profit) Restaurant may be closed but it’s not forgotten. On a weekly basis, Green Star’s page still has ‘views’ & still receives ‘Likes. Green Star closed its doors having achieving a high reputation & a big following for its fresh food offerings, friendly atmosphere, its contribution to its chosen NGO, & increasing the awareness & understanding among its customers of the plight of the poorer community in Cambodia. BUT, HERE’S SOME NEWS FOR YOU…….

New on the scene, check out ‘THE SOUP HOUSE by Avee’, located in Siem Reap, Cambodia. Yes …… owned & operated by the unstoppable Avee Teak, former Owner/Chef of the very popular Green Star (Not For Profit) Restaurant.

That’s right, more than 4 years after Green Star, Avee has ventured back into the kitchen to again excite your taste buds, bringing to you her tasty soups, famous Pot Ling, biting Ginger Pork Spring Rolls, flavorsome BBQ Chicken Kebabs & a few more tasty treats & surprises.....and, in line with her reputation, perhaps an impromptu song or two.

For those who have spent time with Avee previously, renew the experience, to those who have not, it’s time to enjoy a new experience, and to those who, sadly, may not have the opportunity to return to Siem Reap then recall your warm memories of time spent & make sure any friends intending to visit Siem Reap look us up.

Green Star Farewell

GREEN STAR HAS CLOSED

It is with great sadness, although accompanied by a sense of pride & achievement, that Avee & I announce our decision to close the doors, & the ‘life’ of Green Star (Not for Profit) Restaurant.

It was a decision not taken lightly but suffice to say that after more than 5 years of 6 days a week it has had health impacts such that it was clear, change for us personally was necessary.

We are proud of what we achieved, from a restaurant offerings perspective & most importantly the significant direct & indirect financial contribution Green Star made to The Green Gecko Project & the awareness it brought to people of the plight of the poorer community here in Cambodia.

We are also grateful for the recognition given to our efforts as demonstrated by the many positive reviews & commentary from across the world, in Tripadvisor, & in magazines & newspapers ....to mention just a few, Asia Life magazine, Bangkok Air & Jetstar magazines, The Huffington Post, The Financial Times (UK) & a number of Australian newspapers & not forgetting Lonely Planet listing us as one of the top 5 restaurants to eat at in Siem Reap.

On a more personal note, I cannot let this moment pass without giving all credit to the one person who made it all happen .... Avee. She did it all, the shopping, staff management, her magnificent ‘touch’ in the kitchen which produced the food for which we built such a great reputation, not forgetting her infectious personality in socialising with customers, & her entertaining customers with her singing. Thank you Avee for all your hard work & dedication.

Avee & I will remain in Siem Reap. I will continue my voluntary involvement with Gecko, & who knows with Avee ...her number 1 passion is cooking .... so when in town, seek us out, you never know ...or just catch up to say hi over a beer or wine.

So to all our friends & supporters I say, Avee & I have had great times & experiences over the last 5 or more years, met some fantastic people, made many friends & been absolutely amazed at the generosity of many of our patrons who have gone on, beyond Green Star, to become supporters of The Green Gecko Project & the work it does. To all those who have come into our lives we say “AWKOON TOM TOM” (thank you big big) for your support & for enriching our lives.

Lea Hai & take care

Doug & Avee

Green Star (Not for profit) Restaurant, Siem Reap, is closing its doors after 5+ years. It's time for Doug & Avee to make a change of direction

Many of Green Star customers who joined us on either a Friday or Saturday night will have met & been charmed by 'the Twins', Pov & his brother Vit. Yesterday Pov was farewelled at the Siem Reap International Airport by his parents, Gecko brothers & sisters &, friends...on a trip & opportunity of a lifetime.

Tragically, the boys parents were involved in a fatal accident on their moto during the 8 hour trip home that same day.The boys have lost their mother & their father is in a serious condition.

Avee, I & all the staff at Green Star are devastated by this tragedy. Our hearts go out to Pov & Vit & their family.

Green Gecko Project

OUR DEEPEST MOST HEART FELT SYMPATHIES FOR SOTTOUM AND HIS FAMILY FOR THE LOSS OF THEIR MOTHER, R.I.P THEA.

On what was to be the happiest, most exciting day his life, has turned out to be his most devastating of all. Seven hours after proudly waving her son goodbye at Siem Reap airport, Sottoum’s mother’s life was lost in a tragic road accident that also left his father badly injured.

Still in the parking station of the Dubai Airport, we received a message that makes your heart sink... “call home immediately”. I know Rem, and I know that to leave a message like that, it was beyond serious. Sitting in the back of the car while Sottoum marvelled to Tala at how wonderful the roads were in Dubai, my heart pounded as Rem told me the tragic news.

Silent I kept, listening as they nattered about all the exciting things Sottoum was going to do and see during his time in Dubai. How could this happen? How was I going to tell him? How is he to embrace what lies ahead of him when a loss of this proportion has been delivered to him?

We cried, we hugged, we called Dad, we printed off this photo poignantly taken today; lit some candles and made a small shrine to honour his mother in front of his newly blessed Buddha. Today his Gecko family will have a monks blessing while his blood family and Dad lay his mother to rest in their home village.

In a life taken too early, Thea leaves her husband Ti Nol and nine children behind; Chanthy, Neurn, Mup, Sottoum and Sottun (Pov and Vit), Chan, Chun Eng, Rannit, and Seiha. Rest assured sons that your family is our family and that your mum left this world on perhaps the proudest day of her life. You will all do her proud and we will always be here for you.

Our hearts are with you all.

16/07/2014

I encourage all Green Star friends to contribute to encouraging these young 'leaders of tomorrow' by assisting them ($$) get to Phnom Penh

OUR LEADERS OF TOMORROW! Two hours after Kim Suan and Kunthea finished their final exam of the National High School certificate, they received the very exciting news that THEY WERE ACCEPTED into the Leadership Symposium! Along with their Gecko sister Nott, the three girls were over the moon, excited and incredibly nervous at the thought of going to the big city on their own. “What mum, aren’t you coming with us?!”
Realistically we know that our girls are not at the same academic level of their fellow participants, but we are sure their life experience will pull them through. This annual International event hosted by Humanitarian Affairs UK is specially designed to provide, in the next Generation of leaders, an understanding of key sustainable development challenges, and to motivate them to realise their potential as agents of change, to be ‘engaged’ in doing social development work and nurture them into mindset towards humanitarian aid and alleviating the problems of disadvantaged communities in need. We are sure it will be an incredible life changing experience for them.
The course is expensive but we have all agreed it’s an investment we are prepared to make. To make it more affordable, we have set up a fundraising page so any amount can be accepted.
If you think you would like to contribute this amazing journey, then this is the page for you. https://give.everydayhero.com/au/geckoleaders
On behalf of Nott, Kunthea and Kim Suan, we say THANK YOU for helping their dreams come true.

It is always so hard to see someone you love in 'pain'. And so it is with Avee today, the strength of Green Star, who lost her father to cancer just after 4.00 PM. They had a very close & special relationship & she will miss him greatly. Only minutes before his passing she was talki g to him & he lifted his frail arm & took her hand in his...special moments to the end....

travelfish.org This is good food that’s very fairly priced -- Green Star doesn't need to rely on its do-good goals to be able to come out on top as a great dining option in Siem Reap.

A little bit of Green Gecko news.........

Whether it be a marriage certificate, rental contract, land sale or banking business there's only one thing that makes a document legal - in a country where the signature is rare - and that is a BLUE THUMB! Today our newest and most energetic kids in Tiger Club were oh so excited to stamp their tiny blue thumbs on the Ministries of Social Services documents. Pages upon pages for each child has been prepared by our social work team to make its way to the Ministerial Office as it passes through the Village, Commune and District Authorities. Each document makes each child 'officially' a Gecko; where they will be loved and legally cared for by the Green Gecko family. You would've thought they'd won the lottery!
