I love mixing techniques. Here a high grade brass known as tombac was chased and repoussed - the brass is stuck to a pitch bowl and then formed by a process involving hammering steel rods into metal to give it dimension to create a frieze-type sculpture. You work front then back then front then back, slowly raising and dipping areas to creat volume and texture. Brass is a tough metal to form as it’s very hard and this technique involves a lot of elbow grease. The focal faces were created using the ancient technique of painting on enamel, where colored oxides are painted on enamelled copper in thin layers and fired to vitrification inside the kiln.
These harpies were created a while ago for a harpie-specific collection and have since been sold. They were paired with malachite-azurite and gold ceramic beads. I love them greatly and when I cracked one of the faces of the other harpies while hammer setting it (a must-do for brass bezels) I was half glad I’d get to keep one for myself ❤️

✨𝒲𝒶𝓇𝓇𝒾𝑜𝓇 𝑜𝒻 𝒫𝑒𝒶𝒸𝑒 ✨ This is my Peaceable Joan-of-Arc, ode to hope, to unity and to an end of suffering, something I truly believe is the paradise future for the human race if we can root out and destroy the existential viruses in our coding, before it unfurls our DNA and we become the fairytales plants tell each in their chlorophyll dreams. Will we manage? I think so, but isn't it fun how the wheel of fortune keeps us guessing... 😅

Folks this a large statement brooch (with a hidden bail making it also wearable as a pendant), find details about it on my cute retro website here https://mmm.page/bringmemybattleaxe.main. It is only purchasable via DM.

Part jewelry - part wearable sculpture. Finally was able to put in two more days of frantic labour into this ornate wrasse (Thalassoma pavo) to finally finish it. The enamel catches the light just right and the mix of artefact jewelry meets modern world vibe is right where I like it. The drops are subsharan turquoise, which also form the spacers between the very sea-bed type patterns of the agate strand this piece comes mounted on. It's in the shop, you know where to find the ⛓

In the posedonia pastures and kelp underwater fields among which my mermaid head has been so often lately, flit the glistening multicoloured shoals of the shore fish of the Mediterranean. Among them in her pretty abstract spatter pattern, the ornate wrasse, ‘Thalassoma pavo’ grazes in her best finery. Though a common sight it is never overlooked - how could anyone overlook anything so eye catching? I also enjoy the earnest ‘expression’ of this fish.
Thalassoma pavo was the inspiration for this cloisonné base im working on - maybe you can spot her pattern in the making, picked out in wire that will form the holding ‘cells’ (cloisonnes or cloisters) for the future color. Part of her body will be fabricated out of silver and she will be the large brooch/pendant combo to a fierce mermaiden piece.
This and a few other fishies are what I’ve been working on these past few weeks and hope to launch beginning of September ♥️

The Maidenheads are live in the shop - hand painted in layer by painstaking layer over copper, in an ancient technique of miniature making, and vitrified inside a kiln. You know where to find that link 💕✨

Photos from Bring Me My BattleAxe's post 20/06/2023

Pictured here as yet unfinished for a quick shot of my bench today - these maidenheads will have their edges finished to a bright polish and their sweet visages embellished with mystical symbols in kiln-fired gold lustre - then they’ll go in the shop Saturday 24 at 9am PT. Each one has been lovingly sawn out if sheet copper which was then treated front and back to receive enamel. Then, oxides were applied by brush to the enamel in the miniature method, in thin glaze layers numbering 5 or 6, each one vitrified inside a kiln round by round. These will also be subjected to one last fure where gold lustre will be applied.
I make these goddess faces for other smiths to adopt and use in their jewelery. I only made 8 (ah time, you beastly thing you!) and an unlikely to make another round this year so set your alarms if you want one my dears ♥️

Do you feel Spring where you live yet? Here, the scrubby wild thyme is shooting out new leaves, so that I can smell the scent of Mediterranean garigue through my open window which each puff of the merry March breeze. Purple mallow blooms, dark crimson heather and almost neon-yellow wildflowers dot the greening landscape and as the air warms and jackets are set aside, it is again time for beaded strands to reappear on freer collarbones my dears.
I have plenty of precious strands in the store with repeating patterns in lapis, amethyst, rose quartz, lava stone , turquoise and more - all put together with inspiration from that beloved age-old source - the ancient world.
They come in a sweet presentation box and clasp with sturdy handmade clasps that cannot be effortlessly pulled apart. I gave each precious strand a backstory - hop over to www.bringmemybattleaxe.com let the titles take you an an imaginative journey. Time to add to your collection 🌹

Custom necklace I made on commission from a beloved patron featuring tourmalines, opals, painted enamel in the miniature technique as well as cloisonne enamel for a massive and personal statement indeed. It's a riff on my 'The Visitor' design which was featured in Society of North American Goldsmiths magazine 🌷

'Xanadu', my collection inspired by Coleridge's epic poem 'Kubla Khan' features some of my most complex enamels yet.

Work-in-progress on an 𝘌𝘤𝘥𝘺𝘴𝘪𝘴 𝘖𝘧 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘚𝘯𝘢𝘬𝘦 cloisonné ordered from a pendant by a customer who requested a delightful colour way to the snakeskin - teal and purple. Took this shot because I wanted to show you a cloisonné piece’s ‘skeleton’ - see how the wires that have been twisted into the outline still retain their 3-D appearance? These ‘cells’ formed by the wires give cloisonné its name. Layers of powdered glass are placed inside, around two-grains thick. Each layer requiring a separate firing inside the kiln. Sometimes it can take over ten firings till the top of the wires is reached, and the piece is ready for the next steps.

Slipping on some of that delicious clear 'flux'...
Buying and using enamels is nothing like buying paints. For one thing, you buy them buy the ouch-inducing gram, and it's ouch-inducing because they are pricey. Considering you have to wash them a lot before you can use them, and can lose up to half in the process, it's even more of an ouch. And since colours don't mix, you need the whole range that you wish to use - light blue, lighter blue, slightly lighter blue etc. etc. This white powder you see me apply here is clear 'flux', glass powder that once fired will be completely see-through. I like to apply several coats of this when I've achieved the right hues and values in my colours. As I said a few posts ago - not all enamellers work this way. Everyone has their own way. It's even more varied and experimental a artform than any I've ever put my hands to, and I love it for that.
This piece will be in my shop update Wed May 27th, 12pm PT, for my 𝘠𝘦𝘢𝘳 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘊𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘵 mini collection

Um... Not even a month since High Strangeness collection went live, but I couldn't resist. I feel like I have way more UFO's inside me, know what I mean? 😂😅
Two of these prism visitors will be available at next week's 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘠𝘦𝘢𝘳 𝘖𝘧 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘊𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘵 (𝘞𝘩𝘦𝘯 𝘞𝘦 𝘚𝘱𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘛𝘪𝘮𝘦 𝘐𝘯𝘥𝘰𝘰𝘳𝘴) launch to be made into a ring or small pendant. Shop updated with everything May 27th, 12pm PT (9pm CET)

When it comes to making wearable art, the wearable part is super important

I was working for a while on a 'system' that would allow for a multi-style way of pairing up my enamel focals with precious beaded chains and I am STOKED 😍 you guys, to share the results of a lot of prototyping with you! Watch the (clumsy - soz I had to reach across the camera) video of me showing ya the different ways you can wear it. Also not shown - you can slip the focal on a chain and wear it sans beads too. 😍

This necklaces, featuring vitreous cloisonne enamel paired with lavastone and onyx beads allow for a variety of styling options which makes my heart go pitter patter. They will be available in my mini collection launch 'The Year Of The Comet', in the online store on May 27th (time tba)

Working on an experimental riff on my ‘Ecdysis of the Snake’ design for my 𝘠𝘦𝘢𝘳 𝘖𝘧 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘊𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘵 collection. It’s not done yet, and the odds are good that this will turn into a failed prototype (of which I have many), but I have hope. Spent the whole of today on it. Was inspired by the incredible iridescence of the rainbow ball python, whose scales shimmer with prisms, for the shiny new skin of this serpent. Cross your split-tongues for me 🙏🏼🥰

Super excited to hop onto a new theme that I’ve been brewing and gonna show ya asap, meanwhile, stay gold 🌹🛸❤️

What’s that you say? My ring’s too big? I’m so sorry, I couldn’t hear you over the screeching roar in the space-time continuum that my BattleAxe ring was tearing.
I thought about ‘saving’ the pieces you haven’t yet seen till closer to the launch... but I’m always just dying to shaarreee! And as you can see therefore, I caved
‘Swamp-Thing’ ring bling (could also be made into a pendant .. I know not everyone necessarily wants a side-plate stuck to their finger for the sake of fasshuuunnn ) in cloisonné vitreous enamel and fine silver wire. Only one piece and will be purchasable when I launch the High Strangeness collection in April 🥰

Timeline photos 12/03/2020

I’ve been sitting on a pile of cute pieces for the ‘High Strangeness’ collection (ok, not literally sitting..🌵🌵🌵) that I hadn’t shown you yet. I sure didn’t want you to get ‘High Strangeness’ fatigue... though seeing current strangeness underway all over Earth, this might be the fun and welcome kind. Actually the whole collection is a bit of a quirky, light-hearted look at the paranormal and conspiracy theory, which is the kind of spam I wish to be subscribed to personally and have subscribed you to since you clicked that follow button on my feed 😘
✨As to the launch, only a very small percentage of you wish me to postpone it! So, my little Pandemix (cute Pokémon I just invented) it’s all systems go for Sunday* when pieces like the pictured, and some sixteen or so pieces from the last two months will be released.
I decided for this launch btw to not be the ring gestapo and pieces like this one CAN be necklacified should the collector so wish. I understand. I WON’T JUDGE.
*unless the Minister of Magic says no. Check my bio for updates.

These little brooch/pendant 'Conspiracy' TV screens for the 𝘏𝘪𝘨𝘩 𝘚𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘴𝘴 collection were a helluva time-sink lemme tell you! This fella is made of sawn-out sheet silver, with a focal of cloisonne vitreous enamel 'TV Screen' and a beautifully-blinky australian opal as a stand in for its control button.
This piece and others in my 𝘏𝘪𝘨𝘩 𝘚𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘴𝘴 collection will hit the shop Sunday 15th at 12pm PT. In order to be fair to everyone. Head to www.BringMeMyBattleAxe.com, scroll down and sign up to my newsletter to get a notification just before the launch goes live so you'll have the best opportunity to pick your fave from the collection before somebody else does!

Throwback to an absolute fave from my ‘Dreams of Atlantis’ collection from last November (sold). It was my first collection that, nine months into my cloisonné enamel journey, featured cloisonné enamel pieces of a level of brilliance I deemed worthy of customer wrists, fingers and collarbones. Can NOT wait to keep exploring and perfecting this craft, it gets me excited every single day ❤️

Quick and dirty vid of one of the vitreous enamels I completed this week for my 'High Strangeness' collection, launching first week of March. Collection shaping up nicely from the enamels front, can't wait to see them set, polished, and all lined up.
Sorry for the poor vid quality guys, I'll get better snaps when everything's finished - but on the upside, you can really see the glint off that outline.

“I met a lady in the meads,
Full beautiful—a faery’s child,
Her hair was long, her foot was light,
And her eyes were wild."
All of the poetry of Keats, with its undeniable romance, inspired visual artists through the ages. Perhaps none of his pieces sparked the imagination of painters as much as did his ballad 𝘓𝘢 𝘉𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘦 𝘋𝘢𝘮𝘦 𝘚𝘢𝘯𝘴 𝘔𝘦𝘳𝘤𝘪 (The Beautiful Merciless Lady), with its enigmatic archetype of the femme fatale, oh-so-great an excuse for drawing beautiful sexy women. In the poem, we meet a knight who has become physically and emotionally mutilated by unrequited love for a fairy creature he meets in the woodland and is now wandering about, aimless and broken, one of many other men who have met such fate. Whether an allegory for all unrequited love or a depiction of a fantastical enchantress - La Belle Dame lives incarnated on many canvases and panels, and now as this variation of my Dryad pendant, where, flanked by two perfectly gothic blood drops of Indian garnets, La Belle Dame is set to enchant new people from the collarbones of a modern human temptress.
This necklace and a ring version of La Belle Dame Sans Merci will go live in the shop on Jan 15th as part of my ‘Hopeless Romantic’ collection

If you ever wonder why vitreous enamel is so expensive, this might give you an inkling as to why. Every step takes lots of time - and this here is just one of the many many complex steps to go from zero to completion of a piece. Before one even gets to laying down any colour, a myriad things have to be done to prep your surface to make it ready for enameling.
Here I’m working on a piece for my next collection, ‘Hopeless Romantic’ , based on imagery from the poetry of John Keats. This one is based on the poem ‘Lamia’, about a snake-woman of the same name. Ill be revealing more in the coming weeks ❤️

Jerky lil video but whatever.. In honour of my 'document, don't create' creed, I taped a selfie stick to table vice (seriously) for this lil movie creation when I sat down the bend some wire.
This is a larger version of one of the scenes in Dreams of Atlantis that didn't make the collection launch because I ran out of time, even though I'd cut and shaped 75% of the outlines. It was with great delight I bounded back to it today, because a few weeks without enamelling to me are now a few weeks too many.
I like to lay double sided tape on a copy of the design so I can twist and shape on one, then lay the wires down securely I the sticky version so they're less likely to blow away with a draught or sneeze or over enthusiastic eyelash bat. It really is an artistic game of 'operation' video sped up because it would be unbearably boring otherwise.
This piece will be a big battleaxe of a pendant when it's done. I'll try to make better movies of the process you guys.

10/11/2019

As far as I'm concerned, nothing I ever do comes out perfect. Most of my time is spent undoing and redoing previous work, often at the last moment, ditching hours even days of labour just to have another go at getting closer to some ideal I know is there. As to this ideal by the way, Its not a mirage as some love to say - I know, because I do get closer to it. I'm in a closer place now then I was six months ago, and six months before that. Maybe ultimate perfection cannot be achieved true, maybe it's like watching an object approach a black hole, the closer it gets the slower it seems to go - till it appears to stop.
So it is a rarity for me to become attached to work, because I can always picture doing something better. But a rarity I have recently experienced with my enamel work - pieces such as these ones. That it should be bittersweet to send them out to their new owners, because I love them so much nyself. There's something about a finished vitreous enamel piece, taking so long to make, that casts a spell on even me, the ultimate criticizer, that allows me to forgive its tiny flaws and love it. Pretty proud of these two ribgs I'm sending out today.
Next week I'm working on another enamel video once I've figured out a better lighting setup. Meanwhile you guys, thanks so much for your response to Dreams of Atlantis ❤️
