Just finished an old advanced reader’s edition of The Water Knife by Paolo Bacigalupi. Found it going through my brother’s HUGE stash of books. It’s an awesome lite-sci-fi story about water scarcity, and how society shifts because of it. I won’t say anything more - I don’t want to spoil it. The author’s writing is beautiful, almost lyrical, poetic.

Sunday is lazy, sleepy, loungy catday in our home.

It felt so good to talk about you
to share my memories of you
to simply say your name out loud

She asked me if I minded talking about
what happened to you
or would it be too painful to speak of it
I told her I think of it every day
and speaking about it helps me to release
the tormented thoughts whirling around in my head

She said she never realized the pain
would last this long
She apologized for not asking sooner
I told her, "Thanks for asking"
I don't know if it was curiosity
or concern that made her ask
But told her, "Please do it again sometime - soon"

Rebirth (of a Phoenix)

From the bright embers
Of life's pain and misery,

I call this photo Sushi Aftermath. I swear there were three delicious rolls artistically arranged on this plate just minutes before I took this shot. My daughter blames grandma and grandpa for skipping breakfast. They blame her youthful appetite. I ate lightly and patiently waited for the plate with the final two rolls we ordered, of which I, once again, forgot to take a photo.

That second plate was cleared in New Jersey record time. I’ve confirmed it with local officials. We are receiving an award in the mail.

Which quirk is your favorite?

How does my cat sleep so soundly with so much noise? He doesn’t even flinch when I approach. If a sparrow chirps a mile away I wake up from my sleep ready to attack! 😆

Today at the gym I was doing squats right next to this bar. I wasn’t using the bar, but the fact that it was lying diagonally across the floor bugged me. Had to do something about it…

This is a beautiful piece about loss. Take a moment to read it so that you can understand the pain people feel when they’ve lost a loved one.

YOU DON’T JUST LOSE SOMEONE ONCE

You lose them over and over,
sometimes in the same day.
When the loss, momentarily forgotten,
creeps up,
and attacks you from behind.
Fresh waves of grief as the realisation hits home,
they are gone.
Again.
You don’t just lose someone once,
you lose them every time you open your eyes to a new dawn,
and as you awaken,
so does your memory,
so does the jolting bolt of lightning that rips into your heart,
they are gone.
Again.
Losing someone is a journey,
not a one-off.
There is no end to the loss,
there is only a learned skill on how to stay afloat,
when it washes over.
Be kind to those who are sailing this stormy sea,
they have a journey ahead of them,
and a daily shock to the system each time they realise,
they are gone,
Again.
You don’t just lose someone once,
you lose them every day,
for a lifetime.

What is it about the seas
That calls attention from near and far?

Perhaps it’s the way the salty breeze
Softens and smooths the roughest scar;

Or how, despite the sun, one clearly sees
The hopeful hint of an evening star;

Or how one collects seashells with ease
To keep forever in a crystal jar;

Or how the incoming waves taunt and tease,
And we jump and giggle right where we are;

The number of reasons span galaxies —
Most are rational, some bizarre.

But one thing the seas surely guarantees
As I search for inner peace thus far —

It’s the perfect place to release melancholies

Winter night stroll through the fog. A bit spooky…

Stuck home all day with a bum foot gave me such cabin fever that I needed to go out for some fresh air last night. We took an easy stroll around our lake. It really did feel like OUR OWN lake since it was practically empty. We found a Cuban food truck and got cortaditos. Next time we’re going to try their sandwiches. They look delicious!

I’ve started something new, something I’ve never done before, and often when starting on a new journey you tend to feel the goal is sooo far away. Maybe even impossible.

And I have to constantly remind myself that anything is possible…

The Climb

Your summit may seem unreachable
From the base looking up at the top.
Lower your eyes to the rocks in front of you—
Start climbing and don’t ever stop.

Your looming anxiety may hail doubt and fear
And freeze the new path before your feet.
Don’t retreat to the comforts by your fireplace;
Keep digging your boots into the sleet.

And yes.. your errors and failures may produce
Abysmally cavernous holes.
If you fall in, take a breath…
Climb out…
And get back on the trek to your goals.

So stop wishing and dreaming and plan your route,
And take your first step without dread.
Ignore how impossible the journey seems—
Don’t create another mountain in your head.
