Maximum Joy are saddened to announce that their original guitarist, John Waddington has died. John's guitar playing was an integral part of the Maximum Joy sound. He played on and contributed to all the early Maximum Joy recordings. We send our condolences to his family and friends. May John rest in peace.

A Soundtrack for Watching Trees - Ransom Note An introduction to music you might encounter at the inaugural edition of Watching Trees, our newly launched festival.

25/08/2022

"Pure festive disco goodness from the resurrected post-punk legends MXMJoY (née Maximum Joy) continuing their 2nd wind with typical alacrity

Following from the original members, Charlie Llewellyn & Janine Rainforth’s debut LP as MXMJoY, ‘P.E.A.C.E.’ (2019), they return dripping in melody, harmony and treacly groove on a trimmed back echo of their original sound. They’re still dubby, but more subtly so, and now given a more lustrous sort of disco sheen that works a treat here.

‘Joy Again’ starts up with a spume of cosmic disco synths that slip into a driving disco groove of classic quality, all choppy guitar and thicc bassline with Janine layeedr into dead sexy harmonies. ‘Bring It On’ follows with a downtempo hustle giving more room for Rainforth’s vocals to channel proper Salsoul and gospel disco-style vaulted harmonies over its kinky 808 cowbells, and then there’s ‘Love Is Everywhere’, with a more pronounced, breezy reggae-disco lilt and funky punk-disco nimbleness that could have easily come from their early ‘80s heyday."

Maximum Joy set to release The BBC R1 Sessions 1.05.22 - a selection from BBC Radio 1 sessions for seminal DJ's John Peel and Kid Jensen restored, cleaned back to original - the sessions tapes had deteriorated and were playing at wrong speed. Featuring new live for radio versions of Searching for a Feeling and Silent Street amongst other tracks.

Maximum Joy are set to release a 5-track EP of a selection of tracks recorded in 1982 from two
exclusive live sessions for BBC radio legends John Peel and Kid Jensen. Newly remastered, corrected and cleaned for the exact
tempo and optimum listening experience, the ‘BBC Radio 1 Sessions’ includes the popular tracks ‘Searching for a Feeling’ and
‘Silent Street’ and is set for release on the 6 th May via London Field Recordings.
“We discovered the existing Radio 1 session ‘tapes’ had suffered and decayed in quality and specifically were all running too slow
and not true to the originals. These are restored to the original sound and recording quality,” says Janine Rainforth, Maximum Joy
founder and vocalist.
“From the start John Peel took to Maximum Joy and championed us, like he did so many bands and musicians. I had so much
respect for him and we’d listened to his late evening Radio 1 show avidly – his wide influence on the music scene was seemingly all
pervasive. So being invited to do a John Peel Radio 1 session – and then to do a second within a few months was an
honour and a joy,” says Rainforth. She adds, “The Kid Jensen session was for daytime play Radio 1. We had huge respect for Kid
Jensen – his daytime show was buzzing and influential - it was a shift in direction for Maximum Joy. Listening to that session now I
love the energy we bought to it. We were gigging and touring a lot – so we were primed to make this a good one.”

Graded on a Curve: New in Stores for September 2021, Part Four - The Vinyl District 23/09/2021

Thankyou The Vinyl District for picking our reissue of Stretch REISSUE/ARCHIVAL PICK: Maximum Joy, “Stretch” b/w “Silent Street – Silent Dub” (1972) Formed in Bristol in 1981 by horn man Tony Wrafter, fresh from the breakup of the Glaxo Babies, and vocalist-clarinetist-violinist Janine Rainforth, they snagged two former Glaxo Babies in drummer Charlie Llewellin and bassist Dan Catsis, and rounded out the band with guitarist John Waddington, formerly of the Pop Group. Anyone with moderate knowledge of UK post-punk might suspect what’s the score, if they don’t know already. It’s funky, it’s p***y, it’s dubby, it’s skronky, and it has the vocal presence of the 18-year-old Rainforth (that’s her on the cover), extending from Poly Styrene (those wonderful screams) on the wickedly grooving A-side, and Ari Up on the dub deepness of the flip. Just a few months over 40 years ago, this was their debut single, a stone post-punk classic, absolutely essential, originally issued on Y Records in the UK and 99 Records in the USA and given a well-deserved anniversary pressing by 1972. Listening to these two long tracks, it’s clear this band still doesn’t get enough retrospective love. A

Looking forward to this book by Melissa Chemam coming out in UK in autumn, out in France now - thank you for the kind mention, and good to meet you and be part of this Melissa Chemam

(Bristol music history) Back in the late 1970s, Bristol had a blooming post-punk scene but only one of these bands had a delightful and talented female lead singer: Maximum Joy and the great Janine Rainforth here singing 'Stretch' (audio). More in the third chapter of my book...
