Coffs Harbour Music Society are bringing an exciting array of artists to Coffs Harbour this year!

Their 2024 season kicks off in March with Emma Nightingale - Soprano and Alex Raineri Pianist performing light, bright and sparkling arias.

In April, Louise Johnson brings seven harps to showcase her instrument's history. Elena Kats-Chernin also joins us, performing a selection of her own works on the piano.

August sees Simon Tedeschi and George Washingmachine take a fresh approach to the Great American Songbook (think Gershwin, Porter and Waller).

Two piano recitals follow, with the inimitable Roger Woodward joining us in September and rising star Jeonghwan Kim in October.

And finally, in November, Ensemble Offspring's Claire Edwardes rounds out our season with a fascinating Australian music program.

Subscriptions can be purchased by contacting our ticketing officer on 0466 985 652.

A bit of history . Next time you are in the city check out the old Lyrique theatre.

There is a chance even Gen Y Novocastrians saw a movie at the old Lyrique, albeit during the time is operated as the Showcase City Cinemas (facing Wolfe Street). Built as the Masonic Hall, from 1915 up until 2008 (with an interruption here and there), this was a staple in Newcastle’s theatre district.

Dubbed “the flea pit”, what the Lyrique lacked in opulence it made up for in stamina. After brief stint as a mini golf course in the Thirties, the Lyrique was used as accommodation for visiting servicemen during the Forties.
A decision was made to reopen as a theatre before the war ended and by the 1960s it was operating as the city’s art house cinema (I saw Inside Paris here on a rainy night last decade). When it closed its doors in 2008, the Lyrique had given four generations of Novocastrians not only a bit of culture, but also privacy on their first dates.

The Lyrique is now part of Iris Capital’s development of the East End

Lest we forget ❤️
Today is Remembrance Day and at 11am we will have one-minute silence to remember those who died or suffered for Australia's cause in all wars and armed conflicts.
In case you didn't know, at 11 am on 11 November 1918 the guns on the Western Front fell silent after more than four years of continuous warfare.
The allied armies had driven the German invaders back, having inflicted heavy defeats upon them over the preceding four months. In November the Germans called for an armistice (suspension of fighting) in order to secure a peace settlement. They accepted allied terms that amounted to unconditional surrender.
On the first anniversary of the armistice in 1919 two minutes' silence was instituted as part of the main commemorative ceremony at the new Cenotaph in London. The silence was proposed by Australian journalist Edward Honey, who was working in Fleet Street.
In 1997, Governor-General Sir William Deane issued a proclamation formally declaring 11 November to be Remembrance Day, urging all Australians to observe one minute’s silence at 11am 🙌
