I’m not doing much writing on Facebook anymore, but I am active on Threads. ()
If you’re interested in following my thoughts on politics, the state of authoritarianism and threats to democracy… that’s where people are talking and that’s where I’ve been writing.
Facebook’s algorithm has been destroyed by misinformation along with two decades of data for millions of people. Posts here aren’t going anywhere. And Twitter has become a N**i propaganda machine, full stop.
If you join Threads, here’s my recommendation.
- post original threads (doesn’t have to be much, but the people who are active there are looking for real connections.
- follow journalists, but for every journalist you follow, also follow a government department, public
servant, or humanitarian organization.
- for every public person or organization you follow, follow 3 everyday people.
- vet the people you follow. Check their page to see if it looks like a bot. Look for actual, organic conversations rather than reposts or memes. Block anyone who doesn’t seem legit, immediately.
- check replies, too. If someone’s reply seems to be trying to irritate you (at all, even in tone) proceed to vetting before replying. If they seem to be simply agitating, BLOCK without engaging further.
By doing this, I very quickly curated a good feed, and I continue to block liberally. I already have more followers there than I have ever had on social media. And it feels safe. I rarely see hateful rhetoric, and nearly every conversation has been respectful and constructive.
If you’re a super online person, it might not work for you. But it’s been a bit of a return to the things I used to love about social media. And the writing community is starting to pick up as well. Hashtags have just been introduced, and engagement is growing.
It is also starting to become the news hub that Twitter once was, too… but it takes time. 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻

Guys! Because I have zero chill, I have to share the chaos that has been my day.
I got up this morning, visited with some other writers, and did some writing. I didn’t have any panels today, so I went up to my room at 2:00 to take a little nap. At 3:00, I woke up in excruciating pain in my lower right abdomen. Nothing that I did made it any better and the pain was so bad I threw up twice. I’ve had an appendectomy, so I knew it wasn’t that, but the pain was outrageous.
Finally at 5:00, I acknowledged that this situation wasn’t okay. Called my husband and told him I was driving myself to the ER. Halfway to the hospital, the pain went from an 8 to a 12, and I had to pull over. I tasted about 30 seconds, moving quickly left. Then it just fricking disappeared.
I almost went back to the hotel, but my husband (wisely) insisted that I see a doctor. At first, they thought an ovarian cyst had ruptured, but when they had me give a urine sample, there was a little peppercorn sized kidney stone in it. So... I’m messaging you from the ER, where I’m feeling fine and annoyed that I’m not at my con. But super glad the pain is gone.
And I’ll be back soon, ready to mingle.
