The Isiji Masquerade are from the Igbo tribe of Nigeria. This image was captured in the 70s and I am in love with their attire! 😍🙌🏽Talk about making a fashion statement.
I can only imagine, how gracefully they would have moved in these costumes during their cultural ceremonies. So beautiful to behold. But beneath their beautiful exterior lies great mystery. Masquerades are not just entertainers. They hold 'Spirit Power' and can communicate with the ancestors to intervene, bless and guide the people in crucial life events like war, crop harvesting, fertility and burials. They are extraordinary!

MAGNIFICENT! 🙌🏽🤍⚡
Eyo Festival Egungun in their splendid white robes, matching sticks and peculiar hats. Masked dancers embodying ancestral spirits through dance! One of the most fascinating things I ever encountered as a child growing up.
As kids, we were instructed to run at the sound of the drums announcing the presence of Egungun. But I would peak from my window, no matter how terrified I was, just to get a glimpse of the masked dancers as they paraded the streets of Lagos. Fascinating! The way they moved...magnificently, to the beat of the talking drums. 🥁
