The beloved Vietnamese Buddhist teacher, poet, and peace activist Thich Nhat Hanh has left his body at the age of 95. Thay (Vietnamese for “Teacher”) has been one of the most influential guides in my spiritual journey—so much so that his work inspired me to write a song that honored his teachings of the essential interconnectedness and interdependence of all life, which he expressed by the term “Interbeing.” I was blessed to have been able to be in Thay’s presence at several meditation retreats. At home, I continued to practice meditation, and it was at a weekly local sangha that I met the man who I later married—so Thay set up the conditions for me to find my beloved partner. A wonderful unfolding of “dependent co-arising!”
I wrote the song “Many Hands” as a grace to be sung before a meal, in a moment of mindful pause to reflect on the countless beings, natural elements, and political/social conditions that all come together to manifest one single plate of food. I was so very honored to have this song included in Thich Nhat Hanh’s book and CD for children, Planting Seeds.
With deep gratitude to Thich Nhat Hanh, I am posting a live video of the song here, with lyrics, and I invite you to share freely if you feel moved.
