7:37 a.m. CST: Happy hump day!! It's the same story for the second day in a row: chilly morning with a mild afternoon. Enjoy! 😃
Alright all my astronomy gurus! A new moon will be in place, which (in addition to lack of light pollution) will help view the Geminids meteor shower. Skies will be partly cloudy.
8 a.m. CST: From frigid to pleasant, that's the forecast for you Tuesday. Enjoy!
For the first time since April, Jackson measured over 1" of rain within 24 hours. The much-needed rain this and last month has helped some of our drought relief. Parts of the state are now drought-free! The rainfall needed graphic does not include what we saw over the weekend.
7:30 a.m. CST: Brrrr!!! Much of the area are in the 20s this morning! Today is the only day in the 7 day forecast where highs will miss the 60s.
TORNADO CONFIRMED. Shortly after we broke into regular programming, the tornado-warned storm was confirmed. It was difficult to pick up the debris ball because of how fast it was moving. Now that I have a few seconds to break it down, our debris tracker did pick up the confirmed tornado along the Rankin/Simpson County line. Only reports we have received so far are of trees down along Highway 13 near Puckett and Highway 49 near Piney Woods.
A severe thunderstorm warning has been extended to now include Holmes, NE Yazoo and SE Humphreys counties until 7 p.m. CST. Heads up Eden, Coxburg, Thronton, Franklin, Goodman, Pickens and Durant!
A severe thunderstorm warning has been extended to include eastern Smith County until 6 p.m. Strong gusts and large hail possible within this cell. Heads up Raleigh, Bezer, Sylvarena and Clear Springs!
A tornado watch has been issued for much of central Mississippi until midnight.
Strong storms are looking possible for parts of the area Saturday afternoon/evening. There is still a lot to unravel, such as intensity and impacts. There should be some clarity tomorrow about the evolution of this system. A weather impact day (yellow icon) has been issued for Saturday.
While, again, the specifics of this setup is still a bit fuzzy, it wouldn't hurt to brush up on your severe weather preparedness plan over the next few days.
8:05 a.m. CST: Temperatures are going to struggle today, only reaching the mid 50s. We go from Winter chill to Spring storms between today and Saturday.
Saturday's cold front could bring rough weather for central Mississippi. Heavy rain and storms are possible Saturday afternoon/evening. A strong storm or two can't be ruled out. More information to come later in the week.
6:45 a.m. CST: The look is definitely better than the feel this morning. You know it's cold when you step outside and you can see your breath. Give yourself about 5 extra minutes this morning to defrost your vehicle and plan for the winter chill.
We have quite a ways out before our next rain and storm threat, so there will be adjustments in the forecast over the next few days.
What we know: Rain and gusty winds will move across the state Saturday.
What's TBD:
- Timing
- Intensity
- Impacts
6:35 a.m. CST: It's a great start to the week with a comfortable afternoon! Sunshine will be consistent over the next several days.
The fall season has ended and it was the 6th driest fall (September 1 - November 30) of record.
November saved Fall 2023 in becoming the driest Fall on record. I think the last two images show just how little rain we have had since May. As of now, 2023 is on track of being in the top 10 driest years of all time (sitting at #6 right now).
7:15 a.m. CST: Fog has set in behind last night's rain. This should last about an hour or two.
6:10 a.m. CST: Widespread heavy rain from overnight is clearing out of the viewing area and should be out of the state in the next few hours. Many spots had a good soaking rain overnight. Another round arrives tonight!
Activity will pick up this afternoon, starting as isolated showers west of I-55 before scattering across the viewing area. Heavy rain and storms are possible tonight. Numbers indicate gusts (looking at 25-35mph possible overnight).
6:40 a.m. CST: Cotton candy skies anyone?! This beautiful yet chilly start to the day turns overcast, mild and rainy this afternoon and evening. You may not need the rain gear now, but if you'll be out through the afternoon, it may be wise to put it in the vehicle.
RAIN ON THE WAY! Heavy rain is likely Thursday afternoon through daybreak Friday. Additional showers Saturday are possible. We still need several inches of rain, but we have seen improvement (the areas in red were in purple at the beginning of the month).
6:05 a.m. CST: 🥶 IT. IS. C-O-L-D COLD!🥶 We are dealing with a widespread freeze this morning. Thankfully, the sunshine brings highs to seasonal.
Sunrise over downtown Jackson this morning! 😍
6:05 a.m. CST: Happy Tuesday everyone! Areas north of I-20 are nearing, if not below, freezing. The rest of us are also cold and frosty. Widespread sunshine and high pressure moving east will help temperatures near the 60s today. However, we have a BIG cooldown tonight.
The first half of the fall season didn't help one bit, but at least November is trying to pull its weight. Rain and even a few storms look possible late week/weekend. 👀
7:46 a.m. CST: I'm back! Happy Monday everyone! It is a C-O-L-D morning with many areas feeling like the upper 20s! Highs today will be 10-15° cooler than average with most of the area feeling 3-5° cooler than the expected temperature.
If you are getting ahead of the Thanksgiving travel ruckus, this weekend looks picture perfect. Rough weather moves into the deep south Monday and Tuesday.
7:30 a.m. CST: Happy Friday everyone!
We are ending the week with clouds and spotty light showers. Sprinkles/light showers will be on and off today and should clear around dark. The sun comes out tomorrow!
NEXT WEEK:
Several states could see a threat for storms prior to Thanksgiving. This could affect holiday travel for a few states. In Mississippi, storms look possible some time between Monday evening and Tuesday morning. A strong/gusty storm threat remains questionable, but I wouldn't be shocked if we up the threat slightly over the next few days.
(Rain totals: 0.5-1.5" possible)
REMEMBER: We are heading into our second severe weather season. It's not uncommon to have a storm threat like this this late in the year.
8: 26 a.m. CST: This month's rainfall now ties the amount collected from August, September and October combined. And more is on the way! Isolated showers possible tomorrow, but the better rain potential comes Monday into Tuesday with a cold front.
Happy Wednesday! We are overcast, damp, cool and a few places are seeing light rain. Don't get today confused with a Monday.
7:20 a.m. CST: Happy Tuesday! We are dry and overcast this morning, but light rain will start to pick up this afternoon and tonight.
Skies are overcast, but that doesn't mean we can't have a beautiful sunrise! It's a different story for the southwestern part of the state as they are waking up to light showers.
It has been 7 months since Jackson has measured at least 1" of rain in a day! This well surpasses the 1934 streak of 180 days. Maybe we can see this come to an end next week (knock on wood)
RAIN!!! Brush the dust and cobwebs off the rain gear and give yourself a few extra minutes for travel. We could have two rounds of light showers today with additional rounds possible this weekend and next week.
While yes we are expecting rain tomorrow and possibly Saturday, don't expect a soaking rain. Less than 0.25" is looking more likely across our viewing area tomorrow. It's been over a month since Jackson has measured 0.5" and almost 7 months since we've measured 1"+ in a day!
6:15 a.m. CDT: We are looking a bit eerie this morning as fog is settling in the metro. A lot of this is still above the surface. However, if you plan to travel between now and 8 a.m., give yourself a few more minutes on your commute.
Friday's rainfall is another small dose for parts of central Mississippi. Region wide, we could get up to 0.5" with a few areas up to 1". It's definitely a start.
