COMMON COMPLAINT: neck and shoulder pain post pregnancy.
There are a lot of changes to the upper body during & after pregnancy. The increased breast size and weight places strain on the neck and shoulders. Holding a baby in your arms, breastfeeding, leaning over a cot, constantly looking down (who can stop looking at that gorgeous little human you created) all place added pressure on the neck and shoulders.
This can then create headaches and chronic neck pain (and who needs that to add to the new level of sleep deprivation your experiencing).
We combat this by helping our pregnancy patients strengthen their upper back through a variety of scapular retraction exercises. So that by the time bub arrives the body is ready for all that cuddling!!
If you've left it too late and are already experiencing neck and shoulder pain, we can help by initially adding a stretch phase to reduce the strain on the muscles and then move into the strength phase.
Don't wait too long to get it sorted, the longer the pain has to set it the harder it can be to fix!
We've seen some of the cutest bubs imaginable here at General Wellness Centre!

PREGNANCY back/pelvic/sciatic pain!
We see so many of these issues in the 2nd pregnancy that were not there in the first.
The reason back pain/pelvic pain and sciatica are more common in pregnancy #2 is because of the transverse abdominis and pelvic floor weakening during the 1st pregnancy.
Those 2 mechanisms (which make up a big portion of the "core") weaken which changes the pelvic positioning. Adding the weight of baby #2 and increased belly size put more pressure on the lower back causing a multitude of problems that didn't exist in pregnancy #1 when all those muscles were strong. The best way to avoid all these complications is to rehabilitate the "core" during & after baby #1, if it's too late for that, don't stress you can start now, you can even strengthen those muscles during pregnancy. Ps ladies- keggles don't count. There are simple exercises that we can teach you in the clinic to reduce these complications. Book an appointment with our Exercise Physiologist and She will be able to walk you through all your concerns and how you can help yourself & your baby.

So its important to sit down with your Exercise Physiologist and learn how to improve your abdominal muscles without causing more damage. We are here to guide you through all stages of pregnancy, and that includes the recovery process after your little one has arrived.

An honest talk about body change through pregnancy.
I Was Overweight Before — Here's How I Handled Pregnancy Weight Gain It's such a vivid memory, and one I'm not proud to admit. Within days of finding out I was pregnant, my first thought was, "Please be healthy," but immediately my second thought — without even a pause — was, "I don't want to
Core control is one of the most important concepts for pregnancy exercise. It helps reduce your back pain, protect your pelvic floor, reduce pelvic pain, reduce sciatica occurrence, reduce diastasis recti, and so much more.
Problem is its a particularly difficult exercise pattern to master. Activating the Transverse Abdominis means contracting a muscle that sits underneath your abdominals, without activating the abdominal muscles! Tricky is a bit of an understatement. With the use of the ultrasound machine we can physically see what your muscles are doing when you perform the exercises. This tool is invaluable in teaching you how to do the exercises correctly!
We want you to experience all the benefits of exercising correctly for pregnancy so this is included in the cost of a standard consultation!

Post natal depression does not discriminate. At the end of the day we are all HUMAN and in effect are all the same. If you are struggling, talk to someone, if their response doesn't sit well with you, talk to someone else! And let's all work on our response to this conversation. "You'll be right love" isn't the answer. When we all take our public masks off the truth is we can all relate, we all struggle with something at some point. So listen to each other, remind each other that we are not alone, not supposed to be super human! Encourage each other to check in with a professional! We have no worries booking a professional to fix our taps, our back pain, our hair or our car! So add your mental health to that list! It's a pretty important component of our lives that we should keep healthy!!
