2023 Faculty Excellence in Universal Design Winner | UO Accessible Education Center 09/04/2024

Congratulations to Betsy Wheeler, 2023 UO Faculty Excellence in Universal Design Winner! Betsy is such an incredible advocate and inclusion forward thinker. Here's what Betsy had to say about her commitment to UDL principles:

“It means a great deal to me to receive the Faculty Excellence in Universal Design Award. I’m happy such an award exists, because it draws attention to a crucial and often-neglected area of teaching. I’ve gained and implemented my knowledge of Universal Design in Learning gradually, following the “Plus One” principle I learned from Marla Wirrick at UO Online: each time you teach a class, add one more accessibility feature. Some of these features are technical, like adding headers to documents, turning the captions on, and assigning accessible pdfs from eBook chapters or UO Libraries Scan and Deliver instead of my old hand-scanned versions. Some UDL features are policies, like the banning of timed tests and a clear protocol for making up absences. Some features are interpersonal and communicative, like welcoming students warmly, writing clear and transparent assignments, and allowing students to complete classroom tasks on their own as an alternative to groupwork. I disclose my own disabilities, ask students for their patience and accommodation of them, and promise them the same consideration. My course content also constitutes a form of access, allowing students with disabilities to see themselves reflected in the curriculum and all students to learn how they can implement access. I use Universal Design features as teachable moments, showing students how the world at large should work.”

2023 Faculty Excellence in Universal Design Winner | UO Accessible Education Center The Faculty Excellence in Universal Design for Learning Award committee is very pleased to announce Dr. Elizabeth (Betsy) Wheeler as the 2022/2023 award recipient! Betsy has made numerous and powerful contributions to the University of Oregon. Her leadership, innovation, and dedication to students a...

Rachael Young, my friend and local ADHD coach, gave an outstanding presentation on ADHD: Executive Functioning & Empowerment this week at our Neurodiversity Family Support Night. She shared great ideas for understanding and training the brain! Rachael works with teens and families with ADHD with an additional focus of supporting girls, women, and 2e youth. ECCO High School has been so supportive to host us since we started in January, and I couldn't do this without my super collaborator, Dani Crowley! Thank you to everyone who came and shared your journeys!

Thank you CAC for all the hard work and fun of putting on the event, and thank you City of Eugene Adaptive Recreation for the space and support!

Forensic Intensive Treatment Team 29/03/2024

Thank you to Lane DD Services for giving me time last week to facilitate sharing of community resources with Services Coordinators (case managers). There are such significant gaps in services - we need to get the word out on all the options out there! Most folks haven't heard of F**T. So many people in the criminal justice system have developmental disabilities and end up involved because they don't have adequate support. F**T's wraparound services can help.

Forensic Intensive Treatment Team F**T works with individuals who have a behavioral health disorder and are booked into a jail an average of four or more times in the previous year. F**T also supports clients who are high-utilizers of criminal justice resources, hospitals, urgent care resources, or institutional placements. F**T aim...

I was fortunate to renew my Oregon Intervention Systems (OIS) certification last week with fearless leader, Shawn Mode, from Oregon Supported Living Program! He fostered a strong sense of community for learning and was kind enough to let me add my two cents on the brain science of co-regulation here and there. ;)

Great connections in Roseburg Friday evening with parents and educators at FEATT where I shared a presentation on talking with our kids with disabilities about s*x. The when and how are a lot to navigate, but it's never too early for conversations around body positivity and healthy relationships! Let's protect our kids with education! Medically accurate language, normalizing s*xual health as a part of overall health, and conversations about how we respect ourselves and each other get easier the more we practice.

I had a great time yesterday at Full Access's Prepare-a-palooza leading an interactive workshop on how the brain responds in an emergency. Dr. Dan Seigel's flipped lid model makes this information so accessible. The audience got into it! Special thanks to CAC members and folks from City of Eugene Adaptive Recreation for their participation!
