Clare Thorbes Fine Art
Lifelike oil portraits of people and animals. Hi! Welcome to my page. There are lots of beautiful subjects to choose from in this rural area. Real characters.
I've been painting portraits of people and animals since 2002, and this year I'm creating a body of work focused on animals. The cows in my banner photo are Canadiennes, the oldest breed in this country, and these individuals live on Bear River Farms. Painting sweet animal faces is pure joy, and my goal is to enable you to share in my delight, by making each portrait more lifelike than the last.
If you missed my solo exhibition in Ottawa this fall, you can see the paintings at this link: https://www.clarethorbesfineart.com/collections/185829
Enjoy! 😊
Clare Thorbes - Portfolio of Works: Rescued A series about the life of a unique dog. From rescue to shelter, to country then city, Spock had an eventful 15 years. Â
Check out this lovely write-up about my exhibition at the Happy Goat: https://apt613.ca/rescued-a-painted-story-on-display-at-happy-goat-wilbrod-until-dec-15/ Apt613.ca is a great resource for what's happening in the arts in Ottawa.
Rescued: A Painted Story on display at Happy Goat Wilbrod until Dec. 15 – Apartment613 Rescued: A Painted Story is the first solo exhibition by painter Clare Thorbes, now exhibited at Happy Goat Coffee, 317 Wilbrod St. in Sandy Hill until December 15.
Thanks to all who came out to last night's opening of Rescued, to friends and Happy Goat Coffee Company staff who were generous and wonderful to work with in getting the show set up, and to everyone who made thoughtful and heartwarming comments about the pieces. The show is on until December 15 and there are plans to have another event for the same show, same place (Happy Goat, 317 Wilbrod St. in Ottawa), but during the day and open to the public. I'll keep you posted. 🥰
Check out "Rescued", my dog's life story in 14 paintings, from November 18 to December 15 at the Happy Goat Coffee Company, 317 Wilbrod (corner of Friel) in Ottawa. The coffee shop's current hours are 8 am to 7 pm. Best coffee and treats in town!
"Justine, York & Sussex", just completed this week. Check out the store, in Ottawa's Byward Market, for high-end, unique clothing and jewellery. "
The latest painting. My pooch when he was in his prime. His feet thundered like horse's hooves as he ran down this trail. Eight cleared acres to explore - not bad for a dog's life.
Just finished this portrait of my dear departed boy. He'd just had a physio treatment and was feeling good! Rehab Fur Your Pet gave him months of pain relief. Now to get the painting professionally photographed.
This is Bella, who loves to chase pigeons and rabbits, and has become a dear friend to my dog.
Happy Hallowe'en everyone! Wishing you a bountiful, safely gathered harvest of treats and lots of laughter.
I'm sending out a newsletter tomorrow featuring two new paintings. Here's the link if you'd like to subscribe: https://www.clarethorbesfineart.com/email-newsletter

painting "Residence" is what I've been busy with during the first month of social distancing. I fell in love with both the landscaping and the architecture at Earnscliffe in Ottawa.
I'm sharing some wonderful piano compositions from Tim Nast. Enjoy! https://timnast.com/album/1518761/grace.

“The most beautiful, dangerous, adventurous and gratifying journey of all is the one inside yourself…," says Mauro Morandi, who has spent 31 years alone on a Mediterranean island. He urges pandemic shut-ins to take advantage of this opportunity for soul-searching. From a CNN article by Silvia Marchetti, updated today.
Working on a winter landscape, teaching beginner drawing and painting, and just did my first anxiety management workshop recently. A good life in the arts.😊
At the Cube Gallery, 1285 Wellington St. in Ottawa. The show's on until late this afternoon. The landscape at the top right is "By Strathcona Park". Lots of great work in the show, so check it out.
Vernissage this Friday, August 30, 6-10 pm for the Ottawa Art Association exhibition at the Cube Gallery, 1285 Wellington St. The show is on through September 1st. Hope to see you there!
Landscape finally almost done, despite a really busy time. That old creativity coaching idea of "What can I do today for my art?" did the trick. Sometimes I only had ten minutes, but I made them count. If you're curious about creativity coaching, check out www.clarethorbescreativitycoach.com. 😊
I'm working on a landscape set in a park near my building. Love this green city!
Latest commission. Such an adorable little mite.
"Wrestlers" is one of a series of large-scale dog portraits. Showed this one and a couple of others at Art in the Park in Ottawa this weekend.
Just finished another big painting. It will be on view at Art in the Park Aug. 11. Hope to see you there!

Busy preparing for August Tall Ships event in Digby, where I'll have a table and will be painting. Lots of artists and other vendors, and a chance for an on-board tall ship experience.
Great weather this week. Can't wait to do some plain air painting before bug season.
Portrait of Ernie, preparing to roll over for a belly rub.
Thanks for the like! Btw, can anyone in Victoria suggest an exhibition space? Approx 30 x 40, for a series of large-scale paintings. Aiming for late 2018. I'd really appreciate your ideas.
Thanks for the like, Ken!
Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukkah to all!

One of seven paintings completed during two-day Paint the Town fundraiser in Annapolis Royal, NS. Eighty artists, and a plethora of excellent work. Sales were brisk, and the event benefits the local community arts council as well as the artists.
