Celebrate Feast of the Presentation
Happy Feast of the Presentation of the Lord (Candlemas)!
Whether it is a candlelit meal at a fancy restaurant, a birthday celebration with a candle-topped cake, or the procession of the paschal candle at the Easter Vigil, candles are a clear sign of solemnity. We usually sense something different, even quasi-religious, on the occasions that candles are used—think, for another instance, of candles lit at the vigils of societal tragedies and untimely deaths. Suffice to say, candles are objects with rich, religious symbolism.
The most obvious characteristic of a candle is its light. In fact, its original purpose was just that—to provide light. We have a foundational desire to know and this desire drives us to seek the light of truth, especially since sight is the most obvious way to knowledge. In the Christian realm, this is no less true. In fact, Christ says as much. He claims to be, “the light of the world” (John 8:12). Through his presence in our souls by faith, he illumines the darkness of our minds so that we may begin to see him as he is (c.f., 1 John 3:2).
A candle, by its flame, is also able to represent love. We draw in this symbolism explicitly when we pray “Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of thy faithful and enkindle in them the fire of thy love…” A candle’s flame can remind believers of the flame of charity present in their hearts. This is one reason the Church gives candles to the newly baptized and why we all carry candles during the Easter Vigil; the flame represents the work of God in our souls. While we may not see God clearly in this life, the flame of charity allows us to cherish God’s presence in our souls.
The first appearance of the Lord in the Temple is commemorated by the blessing of pillars of wax—wax that will later be used to remind us of Christ’s presence in other temples: the tabernacle of the Church and in the depths of our heart.

Your merciful love, O God,
we have received in the midst of your temple.
Your praise, O God, like your name, reaches the ends of the earth;
your right hand is filled with saving justice.
Joy is knowing, in our hearts, the love of God, and joy is living the reality of his love. This is the joy that awaits us on Christmas.

“Holy God, Holy Mighty One, Holy Immortal One, have mercy on us” has very ancient roots to 5th Century Greek Christianity. It is still sung by many Catholics on Good Friday, alternating between Greek and Latin, representing the two lungs of ancient Christianity.
Sung in Saint Saviours Church Dublin by 4 brothers of the Order of Dominicans - Ireland.

“I don’t want the Granger Smith name to be famous, instead I want to proclaim the name of Christ!
To JESUS All Glory Be Given! AMEN!
I took this pic on Saturday- a keepsake from my last show as a touring musician. It’s been such a privilege to claim that job title for so many years!
Let’s be clear. This is not retirement. That would mean I’m quitting work altogether.
It’s also not because I’m burned out or unwell or sick or heartbroken or grieving. I am more at peace and more free than any other time of my life.
It’s not for any of those reasons.
Let me tell you the real reason. It’s the parable that Jesus used in Matthew 13:44:
“The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and covered up. Then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.”
Knowing Jesus and telling others about Him is the treasure of my life. And I want you to know this, so you can have Him as your treasure too.
I want my family to experience it and my kids to know this joy. I don’t want a career based upon building a name for myself to get in the way of that, no matter what kind of popularity or career I’ve gained.
There is not another #1 song I can write, album I can release, sold out concert I can perform, that is more important than this.
I don’t want the Granger Smith name to be famous, instead I want to proclaim the name of Christ! The one that has washed me clean, the one that has freed me from my shame and my guilt. The one that gave me a new heart. I want Him to be known! And I want to know Him more. That is the real reason I’m leaving music touring.
From now on when you hear the name Granger Smith, my goal is NOT for you to say:
“He was a great singer.” Or “a great speaker” or “author” or not even what a “great loss he suffered.”
Instead, when you hear my name, I want you to think, “Granger Smith? Oh, I’ve heard of him. What a great Savior we have in Jesus!”
I hope to see y’all soon on a new kind of stage.

Today is the memorial of Blessed Jane of Aza, mother of Saint Dominic!
Tradition tells us that, before having Saint Dominic, Blessed Jane had a dream of her son running as a dog through the world with a torch in his mouth, illuminating his path. Because of this dream, Saint Dominic is often depicted with a dog bearing a torch at his feet.
Blessed Jane, pray for us!
Happy Fourth of July!

A pastor asked an older farmer, decked out in bib overalls, to say grace for the morning breakfast.
"Lord, I hate buttermilk", the farmer began. The visiting pastor opened one eye to glance at the farmer and wonder where this was going.
The farmer loudly proclaimed, "Lord, I hate lard." Now the pastor was growing concerned.
Without missing a beat, the farmer continued, "And Lord, you know I don't much care for raw white flour". The pastor once again opened an eye to glance around the room and saw that he wasn't the only one to feel uncomfortable.
Then the farmer added, "But Lord when you mix them all together and bake them, I do love warm fresh biscuits. So Lord, when things come up that we don't like, when life gets hard when we don't understand what you're saying to us, help us to just relax and wait until you are done mixing. It will probably be even better than biscuits. Amen."
Within that prayer, there is great wisdom for all when it comes to complicated situations like those we are experiencing in the world today.
Stay strong, my friends, because our LORD is mixing several things that we don't really care for, but something even better is going to come when HE is done with it. AMEN!
Prayer fragment of St Katherine Drexel:
“Heart of Mary … enkindle within my heart, by your intercession, the divine fire which consumes your heart... O divine Spirit, I wish to be before you as a light feather, so that your Breath may carry me where you will.”
“Keep me from sin in my weakness and despair. In each fall I shall run into your arms as a child to its Father as dear Papa carried me into the ocean for an ocean bath. Your mercy, your love is an ocean of love and mercy.... “
Amen.
