A practise that I always try to fall back on— whenever I begin to fall for the delusion that I’m the hardest working being at the centre of a lonely universe— is to recognise how much of my day-to-day life is contingent solely on the efforts of others:
People who have helped me get to where I am today, people without whom I wouldn’t even be alive today, people I’ve never met, people I’ll never meet, people who are long dead. All of whom created, contributed and continue to contribute towards 99.9% of everything I use, do, say and think throughout any given day.
There’s a certain hubris to believing you’re somehow ‘self-made’. If left unexamined that hubris can become extremely isolating. I know.
Please don’t allow attention seeking internet pundits who have lazily skimmed through ‘12 Rules For Life’ and now believe they have all of the answers to a broken world convince you that taking the world on alone is some how a romantic concept. It’s a big world. But it’s *our* world. We all need help, and trying to deny that is quite frankly extra energy you could be putting into making this world a better place.
We were built to collaborate, lean into that.
With all the kindness in the world-drop the ‘me against the world’ rhetoric. It’s a sad song played on a small fiddle. There’s a whole brass band sat back here who are happy to help you play a much better tune. 🤙🏽
Wonderful. Watch it.
