I am very sad to learn that Shri A. K. Kundu, former director of NATMO, is no more. He was with us even before National Atlas Organisation was established. He, along with Zia Ram, joined the National Atlas Project in 1954. In fact he was the first staff of what we now know as NATMO. Prof Chatterjee engaged him as soon as he completed MA. He also got extension as Director. Interestingly his service was extended at both end of his career.
Shri Kundu was known for his very sharpe eyes in finding out mistakes in the maps. I had the previlege of bringing out the Kolkata Atlas during the tercentenary. His anecdotes were very humorous. We use to look forward to such events.
May his soul rest in peace.

28th International Cartographic Conference (Washington DC, July 2-7, 2017)
Dr. Harsh Vardhan
A day after a successful Department of Science and Technology Conclave, I took a tour of the National Atlas and Thematic Mapping Organisation (NATMO) in Kolkata today.
I visited their Research and Development areas and the huge reference section consisting of thousands and thousands of surveyed records, data and compendiums of other useful information that's fetched to enrich various maps and atlases that we see.
I was shown the processes after which all this information becomes a final map and the people involved in the entire thing.
I also took the opportunity to inaugurate their new building in the Electronic Complex area. After that I addressed all the associates present there and appreciated their work and shared with them the vision of our PM Narendra Modi. Talked about the NAKSHe initiative and the Braille atlas for visually challenged - commendable work for our society that shall have long term effects on individuals in their quest for pursuing their objectives in the area. This is how we ought to work - producing tangible results that are for a greater common good.
Today there's not a single problem that exists that can't be addressed with advancements of science and technology. I asserted the need for finding solutions to problems of commonfolk and contribute to the that he's envisioned for 2022.
This is a golden time for India that it has a PM who’s passionate for science and technology and sincerely wants to alleviate the sufferings of the people of this country- the weaker, downtrodden sections of the society. He’s got the legacy of another great leader that India had- Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee ji who had a similar vision for India, who wanted to reach the last man in the line and stand with him. We must thus stand with Namo in building an India of tomorrow.
With this message, I wish NATMO and all its associates the best in their future endeavors.
