International Conference on Animal-Computer Interaction 2021 (ACI 2021) 08/11/2021

Today.

DETAILS

Growing out of this fertile ground, ACI’s theoretical and methodological scope has since been expanding to include all forms of animals’ interaction with computing systems and all aspects of animal-centred computing, resulting in an increasing variety of applications.

Core aims for the discipline include: studying and theorizing the interaction between animals and technology, whether direct or indirect, dyadic or distributed, active or passive, synchronous or asynchronous; designing technology that improves animals’ wellbeing, supports animals’ activities and fosters intra- and inter-species relations (including between humans and animals); and, last but not least, developing methodologies that enable animals to participate in the design process as legitimate stakeholders and contributors. Overall, the shared ambition of ACI researchers and practitioners is the development of more inclusive societies and more - ethically, economically and environmentally - sustainable forms of technologically supported living.

Traceability and Business Challenges of Blockchain in the Seafood Industry 24/09/2021

In Ireland seafood producers are trying to experiment with blockchain solutions for tracing the distribution of seafood across the country but their are obstacles and it's hindering implementation. This presentation (hosted by IEEE) will delve into the specifics and, most certainly, if you have suggestions, the speakers and host would like to them.

ABOUT

Consumer demand for fish and fish products in Ireland and elsewhere has experienced strong growth for decades. This trend in consumption has been accompanied by an increasing demand for information on the sustainability of the fish consumers are buying, in terms of origin and preservation status along the seafood supply chain. As an introduction to the application of digital ledger technologies (DLTs) such as blockchain to seafood traceability, this webinar is designed to discuss the factors that make these technologies a potential solution to address the inherent challenges existing in the seafood supply chain. Seafood producers need to take action to address increasing consumer demands and trust issues along the supply chain. Blockchain technology has been proposed as a suitable tool to facilitate this, by registering all chain activities in a distributed, transparent, secure and trustful manner. However, the lack of mature and profitable business models is currently hampering the adoption of blockchain technologies along the food supply chain. The webinar will outline the main challenges that companies are facing to develop horizontal multi-party business models to leverage the interoperable and open nature of blockchain technologies.

Skill-biased technological change and the demographic composition of the US military | VOX, CEPR Policy Portal 20/09/2021

Over the past two decades, the US millitary has undergone a technical skills-biased change in recruitment.

ABOUT

There is a common perception that the US military predominantly recruits individuals from the most disadvantaged socioeconomic backgrounds with limited other career options. This column argues that this is no longer the case. Skill-biased technological change has led the US military to recruit more higher-skilled personnel since the 1990s, and while in 1979 the probability of joining the military was clearly higher for those with lower-than-average family income, for the 1997 cohort the probability was much more evenly distributed.
