jazz.org.au CD review Way out West, Peter Knight
Thanks to Music Trust for this lovely, insightful review.
"This band has a unique ability to evoke raucous energy and forward momentum through harmony, rhythm and melody, but at the same time, the ‘moodiness’ of some of the parts of this album is a product of ‘the exotic’ nature of many of the instruments (exotic in the context of Australian jazz) in combination with the trumpet and saxophone. This tension, and the ability of Knight et al to harness it, is what makes Way Out West such a rewarding band to listen to.
It’s almost unsettling, but without seeming to try too hard."
