When you adopt from SCRAPS, you might just win the lottery like these super humans did by adopting a boy like Cash here!!

Please don’t overlook the animals at SCRAPS and all the incredible rescues and shelters in the area. They need you, and we need this world to be a better place with them in it.

14/10/2024

We’re fundraising for the incredible veterinary medical treatment program for animals in SCRAPS care. They treat a full range of illness and injury, all on location without having to transport animals elsewhere for treatment. This saves a tremendous amount of money and everything you donate makes a life saving difference!

Please consider donating today or even a monthly contribution through PayPal. We are a registered 501c3 Non profit organization and have been operating since 2009 for supporting SCRAPS vet-med needs.

We do this with a board of volunteers, dedicated to the same causes that are near and dear to you!

We've gotten several stray cats and kittens in recently that tested positive for feline panleukopenia. It's highly contagious to other cats and can be life threatening- especially to kittens.

We quarantine panleuk positive cats and do supportive care on site. While panleuk has a high mortality rate, we have a lot of success with our care plan and many kittens survive to adulthood.

Donations to SCRAPS Hope Foundation help pay for this kind of life-saving care.

How to lessen the spread of this virus?
* Washing hands before and after handling stray and shelter animals.
* Vaccinate your cats- especially indoor/outdoor cats
* If you bring in a stray cat with vomiting or diarrhea, let us know right away

Please share! Let’s find Zeus a home. He looks like a good pal for hiking, playing, and being a companion for life. His eyes look full of love, which is tough being that he’s been in shelter life for far too long.

It’s hard to find fosters and rescue placements for big dogs.

🐾🐾

Zeus (ID 62260) is one of our longest residents at SCRAPS right now. Yesterday he got to hang out in our dispatch office and got a glowing report!

"He has been an excellent office dog, and I think he is very much enjoying the quietness as he takes a peaceful nap. With Zeus being in dispatch, he has shown to be a kind, gentle, loving dog that just wants a companion and someone to play tug with. From what I can tell, he knows sit, stay, lay down, and enjoys pets all over. For the majority of the time that Zeus has been in the office with us, he has been napping and occasionally engaging for pets and playing with toys."

Come meet him and other dogs at SCRAPS today! We're open 12:00-7:00 and Saturday 11:00-5:30

Cheers to everyone at SCRAPS for all your hard work to care for the animals 🐾🐾

Little Audrey is wearing the world's tiniest cone of shame. She's been suckling on herself which can be incredibly harmful.

Kittens separated from their mom too early often suckle to soothe, whether on blankets or each other. In the case of suckling on siblings they can be separated from each other until they kick the habit. But every once-in-a-while we get one that does it to themselves! Hence: teeny tiny cone!

To learn more about this behavior and how to deal with it in kittens, check out this info from Maddie's Fundhttps://www.maddiesfund.org/Harmful-Non-productive-Suckling-in-Orphaned-Neonatal-Kittens/presentation_content/external_files/Educational%20Handout-%20Harmful,%20Non-Productive%20Suckling%20in%20Orphaned%20Neonatal%20Kittens.pdf

Thank you SCRAPS and the vet-med team! Way to go!!

Adopted!!

Sylvie (69008) is heading to the adoption floor today! She's a snuggler who likes belly rubs

She's the second kitten to need a tail amputation this month. Thanks to generous donations made to the Hope Foundation we are able to provide life-saving vet procedures here at SCRAPS.

Sylvie came in with fly-strike in an infection at the base of her tail. Her tail was not salvageable and had to be amputated. Our vet was able to do the procedure on site, and she remained in our clinic during her recovery. Today her sutures were removed! And, drumroll......... she's able to 💩 just fine!

We open at noon today 6815 E Trent Spokane WA

Hotdogs and string cheese please!!

Our canine enrichment team is asking for donations of hotdogs and string cheese to use while working with our doggos. These high value treats go a long way when working with frightened or stressed dogs.

Thank you!

It’s been hot this summer. This is a good time to share the message and support everyone who is trying to keep their pets cool. It can be expensive and certainly takes some thoughtfulness to plan ahead for vehicle trips or outings with your pals.

Here are some interesting tips! What others do you have?

•Plan ahead to ensure your pet won’t have to stay in a hot vehicle
•Avoid walking on blistering hot ground
•Try using an umbrella to keep the sun off
•Bring along water for you and your pal
•Plan for breaks
•Exercise early AM or late PM
•Try a swim, safety first!
•Check on a neighbor, and their pets

SHF is thrilled to share an update on the recent funding for dental equipment at SCRAPS! Thanks to supporters, the new machine is now up and running, making a significant impact already. With it, the SCRAPS team completed essential dental extractions for a senior dog suffering from severely infected teeth, followed by scaling and polishing the remaining teeth.

This in-house procedure saved hundreds to over a thousand dollars, allowing SCRAPS team to fit it into their schedule earlier this week. We're proud to support SCRAPS in providing much-needed care to animals in need.

In the photos, you'll see Dr. Beth, Robin LVT and a dedicated clinic volunteer, Melissa, showing the remarkable before and after shots!

Meet Star, animal ID 68536. She is a senior dog with some arthritis and bad knees, but thanks to the dental care she received, she is now feeling much better. Star is currently available for adoption and looking for a loving home!

The hard work that happens at SCRAPS and throughout the entire rescue and animal control community is some of the toughest around. It can come with a great deal of sadness but also profound reward when animals find their way home and into safety like our kitty friend here, Potter.

SCRAPS has so many pets like him just waiting for you. We hope this story inspires you to adopt, share, donate, or volunteer!

“We adopted a crazy little boy named Potter. We had no intention of adopting a cat, but a very kind woman working with the kitties told us that he was a gem.
….
Thank you for all you do. This is our second cat from SCRAPS and they are both so full of love.
Here is Potter with our dog Sugar. As you can see, Sugar is smitten.”

Check out Buzz and Woody (Toy Story 😍)

“Greetings from Kennewick! Wanted to share some exciting news with your staff. Woody has passed his advanced training and will be going for CGC certification. We're also looking into agility classes since he enjoys running and climbing over everything he can.

Buzz graduated basic training and will be advancing to intermediate, with the final goal of CGC certification like his brother.

They are spoiled to the tail, but are loving life. Each day meeting new people and experiencing new situations. They have been to Fort Walla Walla dog park and loved being able to run and play while having the confidence that we were close by.”

Thank you to this family and everyone like them for adopting, volunteering, and donating!!

🎆 It’s 4th of July week which means please be mindful of your pets and the impact of fireworks and large gatherings for festivities.

🗒️ Keep them safe, licensed, chipped and neutered.

🌭 Now for the fun part! Everyone loves a hot dog for the holiday! SCRAPS is in need of fresh hot dogs for the Dog Enrichment team. Please plan to deliver when they are open so they can be kept fresh and cold.

Thank you!

Recently, we sponsored to send SCRAPS staff Veterinarian and the SCRAPS Dog Enrichment Team to the Suzanne Clothier dog training seminar held in Spokane and coordinated by Prairie Dog Pet Mercantile. This valuable information and time spent will benefit the animals at SCRAPS in many ways.

There are so many ways you can help volunteer to support SCRAPS as well. For example, laundry (hours of laundry each day with all those cozy blankets and beds!), socializing animals, dog walking, and more. Thank you staff and volunteers for all you do, you are working hard and making a difference! It’s also thanks to your generous donations that staff at SCRAPS has a wonderful vet-med program to treat animals who are found needing help.

These animals need loving homes, fosters, and all the volunteers they can dream of to help.

Why don't we open until noon on weekdays?

Before we open to the public for impounds and adoptions, our staff goes through to provide the bulk of the daily care to our animals.

Daily, animals receive prescribed medications or treatments, a kennel cleaning, and breakfast before we open for the day. The staff keep a daily care record for each animal as well. This helps us track their health, their stress level, and any behavioral things we need to keep an eye on.

Many of our dog walkers arrive before we are open so the dogs can get some play time, interaction, and fresh air before we are crowded. Our volunteers also provide notes and feedback about dogs that are incredibly helpful when talking to prospective adopters.

Our staff also deep clean empty dog kennels to see how many dogs we can impound that day.

Appointments are no longer needed for adoptions.
But we DO need appointments for stray impounds. Please call us to make an appointment 509-477-2532

Thank you to all fosters and SCRAPS veterinary team for all your hard work during kitten season. You make a difference!!

Huge shout out to our fosters today! 🤩

They stepped up to help our sickest kittens. We've had a lot of kittens with upper respiratory infections coming in. These ones need extra care and love. Sometimes it's daily medications, sometimes supplemental feeding, sometimes they need even more.

While they can get that care here in the building, they get much more one on one time in a foster home.

Thank you to our fosters for getting these kittens into homes while they recover!

Quincy, who is now appropriately named Kickstand, was adopted last year from SCRAPS after healing from a leg amputation surgery. Here is his year one anniversary GLOW up photo! He looks incredible!

“His new name is Kickstand (we call him Kicks for short) and he’s out living his best life! He is the best hiking/adventure buddy, great with my two young kids, goofy as heck, and he has just overall been such an amazing dog!”

We thank all donors, volunteers, and the SCRAPS Veterinary Medical team who make miracles like this happen every day!

A note from our Foster coordinator:

While I don't want to jinx it, kitten season has been slow to start this year. I know I know, one should never say something like that. But...

This gives me more time to get to know the dogs staying here at SCRAPS. A quick walk through of A & B pod and I snapped some shots of our adoptable dogs. Obviously these aren't the best pictures, it's just a quick pic to get them out there. To have them seen. To show you some of dogs in our care.

I usually don't get to know dogs until they've been here a while.

There's Kevin, a high energy boy who can always catch treats in his mouth. There's James, I see him barking over there, but as soon as I'm near his kennel, he's a perfect gentleman. There's Ruffles, she nursed her puppies and they've all been adopted, she's waiting for her home now. There's Houdini, who will chill on his bed until I come by and say "oh hello, you have treats for me?"

This weekend is going to be busy with Bloomsday, and the 50th anniversary of the '74 expo, and it's supposed to get to 70 degrees on Saturday!

But maybe, just maybe, this is also the weekend you are going to bring home your new family member. 😊
