Sip on, plant protein friends! The truth is you don’t need to combine complementary plant proteins in a single meal in order for your body to be able to use them. That’s outdated knowledge. Whether you’re a vegan or not, your body will combine all the amino acids consumed within a 24-hour period and complete the “incomplete” ones as long as 1) a variety of complementary proteins are consumed and 2) enough total protein is consumed. Grains and beans are the most common complementary vegan protein sources, though we can’t forget about nuts and seeds. But if you’re an omnivore, the amino acids from dairy or animal-based proteins will help to complete those from plant proteins. SO, unless your protein sources are very limited or if you are only eating very small volumes of food/protein, don’t stress about combining your plant proteins in a meal. Grains and legumes are the most common complementary plant proteins because the combination of their amino acids yields a complete protein. In other words, the essential amino acids in legumes help to complete the amino acids in grains and vice versa. Specifically, legumes are typically high in lysine and low in methionine/cystine, whereas grains are high in methionine/cystine and low in lysine. If you’re a flexitarian or omnivore, combining plants and animal proteins works similarly. The amino acids in eggs or cheese can help the amino acids in brown rice become complete so that your body can use them to build tissue. Protein blends contain multiple types of proteins. The benefit of choosing a blend is that it’s an easy & convenient way to get a full range of essential amino acids. There might also be benefit to the variety of absorption rates for each protein when used post-workout. However, blends aren’t always better. Here are 7 reasons to choose a single-source protein powder like rice OR pea protein: FOOD ALLERGIES AND INTOLERANCES - Proteins are what typically trigger food allergies, so having isolated sources of protein makes it easier to find something you can use. OTHER MEDICAL REASONS – For chronic kidney disease (stage 1-3) for example, you’d need dietary protein that was low in minerals. Generally, most dairy proteins are not favorable for kidney disease due to being high in those key minerals.
