Chaplain Bill Hunt, Jr. of the Kittitas County Sheriff’s Office passed away suddenly on the morning of July 5, 2024. He will be sorely missed.
Bill Hunt first visited inmates at the Kittitas County Jail on July 4, 1999. He said that from the first time he set foot in the jail, he felt a calling to minister to people behind its walls. Bill demonstrated a deep commitment to this service and then-Sheriff Gene Dana asked him to become a certified Chaplain to the Sheriff’s Office in 2001.
To enhance his ability to serve in difficult and dangerous situations and to understand the experiences of both the deputies and suspects he ministered to, Bill underwent the challenging KCSO Reserve Deputies’ Academy. He was sworn in as a commissioned Reserve Deputy in 2003.
For the next 18 years, Bill served as both Chaplain and Reserve Deputy for the Sheriff’s Office. Bill volunteered thousands of hours in counseling and caring for inmates of the Jail and also trained others to do so. When called on by deputies at every hour of the day or night, Bill responded to the most devastating kinds of calls, countless times bearing the burden of notifying and comforting the families and loved ones of the victims of crimes and accidents. As a Reserve Deputy, Bill was a trusted and relied-upon partner to full-time deputies. He facilitated and assisted with myriad security details, traffic safety details and inmate transports. Bill helped train up scores of Reserve Deputies after him.
Bill remained committed to his ministry to inmates after he resigned his Reserve commission in 2021. He was a deeply devout Christian, but he was able to sincerely and effectively care for people of different faiths or no faith at all. Bill was an exceptionally giving and loving person and this Sheriff’s Office and community were made immeasurably better by his presence.

EXPIRED TABS YIELD DOPE (etc.)
Around 11 pm on Monday 6/24 KCSO Corporal Tyler Harris noticed a car displaying 2022 tags in the south end of Ellensburg. Not the crime of the century, but a violation worth looking into. So, he ran the plate through the Department of Licensing and learned it hadn't actually been licensed since 2020--meaning the expired 2022 tags never even belonged to this car. You definitely can't do that, so he pulled the car over to say hello.
The driver, a 39-year old Mattawa woman, had felony warrants from Grant County, and Corporal Harris placed her under arrest. During the arrest process, she was found in possession of suspected fentanyl. There was also visible drug paraphernalia in the car, and the vehicle was seized for a search warrant. That search located 'blues' (suspected fentanyl tablets), bags of suspected m**h and fentanyl, scales and drug packaging materials, and cash in standard drug-transaction denominations. It also revealed a counterfeit social security card under a different name, someone else's credit card, and six forged trip permits.
The woman was booked at the Kittitas County Jail for transport to Grant County on her outstanding warrants. During the booking process she tried to introduce drugs into the jail by hiding them in a body cavity--and was caught, fortunately, by our Jail's full body scanner.
Investigation is ongoing and the woman is expected to have warrants issued for delivery to our Jail on numerous charges when Grant County completes their business with her. Thanks to Corporal Harris for his proactive law enforcement, and thanks to the alert Jail Deputies who prevented the potentially deadly introduction of drugs to our inmate population!

Exciting news at our Diaper Bank! New baby care items are available!
About the Diaper Bank:
Clients can come weekly to get diapers and wipes. We currently have sizes 0-7 in stock, for children up to age 3.
Diaper Bank procedures:
Guests must register, as we are required by the state to keep track of number of households, and children by age, and how many of each of the supplies they receive during the year. Data is not sorted on the names of the households. We need names and birthdates so we can find them in our computer system. Names are never reported.
There is no upper income limit currently in place to take advantage of the diaper bank.
Each child under three years old may receive up to two packages of diapers per week, along with two packages of wipes. If a child is in either size 0 or size 1, they may receive up to three packages of diapers per week, along with three packages of wipes.
When available, each household may take advantage of other supplies in the Diaper Bank.
The diapers must be for the specified child’s use only, and not to be sold.
