ARE YOUR SONGS INSPIRING? SPEAKING OF FANS, DO YOU HAVE MANY? ARE YOU PROFESSIONALS? See above.
Not particularly, although if you have a few beers in you, it might look that way. We have been known to inspire a few 60-somethings to dirty dance at times. Although we really don’t ever want to hear that years later some child was conceived at one of our shows. However, I think we’re safe as most of our fans are probably infertile due to choice, age, or other malformations. John is our number on
e fan, mostly by virtue of being great at carrying equipment and showing up on a moment’s notice. He also was kind enough to spoon with Jeff all night after a bender in the basement so that he did not suffer from hypothermia. If playing for beer and pizza qualify as ‘payment’, then I guess technically, yes; although like many things in life, you get what you pay for so we appreciate lowered expectations. We do have day jobs, so don’t worry— our livelihood is not dependent on this. HOW OFTEN DO YOU PRACTICE? Actually, most of our live shows are in fact an open practice. Much like the Colts, we like to give back to the community and our fans (and Jeff’s wife) by getting out of Jeff’s basement when we can. DO YOU TAKE REQUESTS? Yes, we will listen to whatever you shout, although we would only play it in the unlikely event that you request something we were already going to play. And, while we’re on the topic, shouting “Free Bird” has become a tiresome cliché. If you want to shout Skynard requests, go for something a little more obscure like “That Smell” or “Simple Man”. Other requests like Dragonforce, Ozzy, or Justin Bieber will be met with a chuckle, although Jeff may call your bluff and break out “Baby” and Jerry will play “Paranoid” opening riffs if encouraged. WHAT KIND OF MUSIC DO YOU PLAY? Pretty much a mix of what we like, which ends up to be a mix of classic rock, older alt. rock, some country, and Elvis. We have a few originals, although due to the answer above on practice, these are not typically part of our rotation. Our songlist depends on what the singers feel like and who pushes their agenda along. Right now includes Avett Brothers, Tom Petty, Dwight Yoakum, REM, George Strait, and U2. DO YOU HAVE A DRUMMER? Jeff’s foot is our drummer— he activates our electronic version of a drummer. We have had a few different drummers over the past few years, although this one has the most reliable attendance. And no, it’s not like Spinal Tap, they don’t die…just busy with families. DO YOU HAVE A BASSIST? DOES JERRY EVER SING? Jerry *can’t* sing, and thus prefers to be like Teller or Silent Bob in the mix. However, he will occasionally do an impression of Elvis or Bob Dylan that can pass for vocals. Much like Phil Lesh taking lead vocals for the Grateful Dead this is a rare occurrence and should be met with cheers of pity much like the short white guy coming off the bench for the last 54 seconds when the basketball game is well in hand. DO YOU HAVE OTHER SPECIAL GUEST SINGERS? A highlight of our live shows are cameos and occasional spur of the moment walk ons by various family members, friends, and hangers on. Please contact our management company (Jeff) for interest. DO YOU HAVE MERCHANDISE? Our business model is not well-developed, as noted above by drinking for our pay. So we have not gotten to the point of t-shirts, trucker hats, syringes, recumbent bike seat covers, or Dirt Farmers brand of deer jerky. Music is available whenever Jeff throws something up on youtube. I have been told we have many fans who collect and share live bootleg downloads. Unlike most modern bands, we are actively looking to block this activity and force fans to pay for illegal downloads and homemade videos. DO YOU HAVE ANY CORPORATE SPONSORSHIP? We are looking for the opportunity to sell out, and Randy is constantly pitching to venture capitalists, but right now the 15% off at Guitar Center Jeff gets is the closest that we have come. WHAT IS THE “OPEN PRACTICE- 2011 TOUR” SCHEDULE? It pretty much depends on our day jobs and willingness of fine local establishments from allowing us to bother them on a Friday or Saturday night, and of course the free beer. Look for us in Zionsville, Whitestown, pole barns, lake houses, Ball State, family reunions, and beyond.
