Musin' with Susan 4/7/20 - 2020 VISION
My vision this month is for the United States of America.
I envision our becoming united in our efforts to stop this dreadful virus.
I envision those in power believing the doctors and scientists working tirelessly to educate and save us.
I envision real leaders being given credit and becoming the spokespersons for us all and false leaders being seen for what they are, dangers to all of us with personal agendas that have nothing to do with loving kindness.
I envision our country becoming the best we can be, one taking care of all our citizens with every means available.
I envision a critical mass changing the narrative of the virus in this country.
I envision each of us practicing acts of kindness, doing all we can for each other.
And I envision more stories of those acts of kindness being made public, filing our airways and the internet, drowning out the fear and disregard and disruption.
I envision we live up to our name, the UNITED States of America.

After all that musing about wanting to be righteous instead of self-righteous here I am yelling about the woeful inadequacy of the current occupant in this time of crisis. I’m not even going to go over the litany rolling around in my head. It just makes me crazy. [Aside: Does craziness lower one’s immune system? If so, I might be in trouble.]
The week I’ve had to keep my mouth shut by simply deleting group emails from my sisters and their spouses who all seem to think Covid 19 is nothing more than a media event. One sister has called it a panic-demic. Cute, but really?
So here’s the question. How can ANYONE who’s paying attention to WORLD NEWS think this is nothing but a media event? Yes, the media is having a heyday with it, which is to be expected because of our 24-hour news cycle. But really, not to take it seriously?
At least, after corporations and governors and other real leaders began taking serious actions, and the stock market screamed at the occupant, he's been forced to come up with some kind of a plan. Good grief. And thank goodness for our Democratic House of Representatives, especially Speaker Nancy Pelosi, for coming up with legislation that will actually help real people. (Waiting to see what the Senate does after McConnell decided leaving Washington for a four-day break was more important than doing the job he and his Senate colleagues are paid to do. ALL news outlets, including Foxaganda, have listed what's in the bill from the House and have repeated that the Occupant supports it, so if the Senate tries to change too much, people at least will know whom to blame. Well, we all know in this political climate that would be Obama and the Democrats.)
Okay, I’m definitely not musing; I’m just ranting.
So instead of continuing the rant, I’ll take a deep breath (in the safety of my home), continue to wash my hands constantly, and follow suggested protocol when I’m around others.
I hope you are safe and are keeping yourself and those with whom you come in contact safe. I also hope any of us who are exposed to Covid 19 fall into the 80% who won’t be gravely affected.
Please, do everything you can to protect not just yourself but others. Don’t get this virus and unknowingly spread it around.
And thanks for letting me rant this week.

I’m still musing about the Equal Rights Amendment.
I was a smidgen too young to join marches and demonstrations that led to the Civil Rights Amendment, so my first ones were for the ERA.
As you know, the amendment bans discrimination on the basis of s*x.
Although Congress passed the ERA in 1972, they imposed a year--1982--by which it had to be adopted by 38 states. Thirty-five states, including Tennessee, adopted it within that time frame.
ERA proponents have been working since then to get the ERA adopted by last three states, and finally, with Virginia, they have succeeded!
Now, the last three states to ratify—Virginia, Illinois, and Nevada—are suing, saying the Constitution doesn’t give Congress the power to set a deadline on the ratification process.
It’s really time to have the Equal Rights Amendment added to our Constitution. What better way to celebrate 100 years of women’s right to vote than by FINALLY having the ERA ratified?!
Here it is, in all its simplicity.
Section 1: Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of s*x.
Section 2: The Congress shall have the power to enforce, by appropriate legislation, the provisions of this article.
Section 3: This amendment shall take effect two years after the date of ratification.

CONTACT SENATORS DAILY DURING THIS IMPEACHMENT "TRIAL"! Let them know you want an open, fair, and real trail with documents and witnesses!
Here's my Resistbot to Alexander and Blackburn, sent last night (1/20/20):
The opening format for the Senate impeachment hearings has just been released, and I am aghast. You swore an oath, on the Bible, to be an impartial juror. How can you do that when opening arguments will be 12 hours long, going into the middle of the night? Are YOU going to be there for 12 hours four days in a row? If not, how can you vote to approve this ridiculous time schedule? This schedule is outrageous and all about hurrying and hiding from the American people. Please honor your oath and vote for reasonable times for opening arguments. Protect the integrity of the Senate, of your office, of your reputation, and of the public’s right for complete information. Establish a procedure that MAKES SENSE!
Sullivan County Democratic Party
I just learned something about impeachment I didn't know. Basically, the only thing cast in concrete in the Constitution is that the Senate shall have a trial and the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court shall preside. And that Senators must swear an oath to be impartial, but we already know that one is down the drain. The Senate can do anything it wants at any time during the trial if there are 51 votes. The Senate can change rules as the trial goes along, as long as there are 51 votes. Fifty-one votes can do ANYTHING in an impeachment trial.
What this means is that the Senate can vote as soon as the "trial" begins to dismiss charges. They can also vote to have or not have witnesses.
We need FOUR Senators to vote against dismissal and for witnesses, to vote for a real trial in order to get to the truth.
I believe Lamar Alexander can be convinced to be one of those four; we just don't have a lot of time to convince him.
Every single one of us needs to WRITE AND CALL Alexander's office before January 7 to tell him we want to get at the truth and to urge him to ensure a fair trial by voting for witnesses. We need to let him know Tennesseans want a fair trial and want the truth to come out, whatever it is.
Sunday (December 22) from 2:00 until 3:00 we're going to meet at Bristol Headquarters to write that simple message on the backs of stamped envelopes or in letters to go in envelopes. (If we use postcards, they might not get there before January 7; envelopes definitely will.) Please join us if you can. If you can't, please take this action on your own.
I'm going to post this action on social media. My hope is we can get word across the state, that others will join us so we make a real impact when Sen. Alexander walks in his DC office. Please do anything you can to help get the word out, and please call his office and write your email or letter or note on the back of an envelope.
I honestly believe our country's future hinges on what happens in the Senate with this impeachment trial.

My Resistbot to Phil Roe. PLEASE send an email to him and post here. It doesn’t need to say more than “Vote yes on impeachment,” if you feel that’s all you can do. He needs to hear from us, his constituents!
“I know and understand you support the President. More important, you swore an oath to uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States. You have a solemn duty to do that, regardless of the political party of the President of the United States. Therefore, you must vote FOR impeachment. To vote against impeachment is a dereliction of your sworn duty, undermines the integrity of our upcoming presidential election, and places the power of Congress subordinate to the power of the President instead of being equal in power. Trump is the first president in our nation’s history to refuse to comply with any Congressional subpoenas. If you vote against impeachment, you are sending a clear and resounding message that the president is above the law, for as long as our country lasts.”

Yesterday, August 26, was Women's Equality Day. And today, August 27, 2019, feminists at STILL fighting for equal rights for women. The ERA is still one state short of being ratified.
I remember when I first recognized my life wasn't going to be as free as the life of my younger brother because I was a girl. It was the summer after 2nd grade. I was 7 years old.
I was a child during a time most children ran around all summer in shorts and no shirts, and usually no shoes. If we went swimming, we all had on the same kind of "swim suit," a pair of some kind of shorts. All the little boys and girls looked and dressed alike on those summer days.
I was an early riser, awake and active before anyone else in my family. That Saturday was the first glorious spring day without school, when the skies were clear blue and the sun was calling to my being to let it touch and warm my body.
I got dressed for my first summer day--shorts and NO SHIRT! YAY! FREEDOM!
I walked around the block and as I walked, I had the growing sense I was too old to go without a shirt anymore. No one told me that. No one was even outside that I remember. I just had an inner sense that I had crossed an unfair line that only boys could cross. Girls had to stop at that line.
I trudged home and put on a shirt.
I felt the unfairness of it. I mourned the loss of that one seemingly small freedom, the freedom of how I could dress (or not) on a beautiful spring day when the sun was calling to me.
Most girls and women have memories of their first realization of s*xism, those light bulb moments that made many of us activists. Mine was not being able to go shirtless anymore. Something so simple and yet so profound. That moment is what turned the light on for me (what Gloria Steinem called that "click" moment) and one of the childhood experiences that has led me into activism.
Today, in honor of Women's Equality Day, take a minute to remember your own past, what helped bring you into your activism today. We all have stories of when we noticed some kind of inequality we wanted to right. If you have the time and inclination, share one of your stories with us. Speaking our truths gives us unbelievable power, and right now, we need all the power we can get!
