How am I intended to tackle our region's concerns around community safety and increased crime rate? Well, here is my plan!

1. Prioritize community safety: As Mayor, I believe in listening to those working on the ground, fostering coordination among agencies, and supporting initiatives like Mark Harbrow, Jabalbina, and others for effective community safety.

2. Empower First Nations youth: We must create opportunities for Indigenous youth to enter trades and integrate into the mainstream economy, strengthening our community from within.

3. Reform child safety services: Our approach to youth justice and child safety must move away from remote placements and bureaucratic responses, focusing instead on community-building and victim support.

4. Strengthen local service systems: Council should lead efforts to develop service systems and increase housing supply, addressing root causes of crime and supporting victims in their recovery journey.

4. Emphasise the importance of preventing inappropriate development that is out of sync with the tropical environment.

I was on ABC radio this morning articulating CF’s waste policy and outlining some of the key platforms I’ve been running on like planning, transport and housing.

I was asked whether I was up to the job and expressed my view on what true leadership is all about- having a vision for the future and the ability to take people with you on that journey. That is undoubtedly what I and the CF team have tried to do throughout this campaign.

Please listen to it to learn more about my vision for our region we call home.

Last night I attended the Machans Beach Community Association's monthly meeting with four other mayoral candidates and the four Division 8 candidates. Nearly all the statements and questions revolved around the 17 December flooding, responses to it, and future solutions. I was very supportive of the moratorium on development in the Barron Delta while inquiries are carried out through council and through JCU's Prof Jon Nott.

I raised broader questions around the importance of future integrated, more prescriptive planning that is responsive to climate changes and provides greater certainty to residents.

All division 8 candidates attended the Machans Beach Community Association forum last night, along with 5 of the mayoral candidates. Denis Walls for Mayor and I emphasised the need to pause development on the river delta and reconsider the previous 1997 council development plan. Many problem issues were raised but ultimately they relate to poor planning and oversight, and also to the lack of final say over land use on the delta. All of the residents have to live with the consequences of levee banks redirecting flood flows, roads acting like flood plain weirs, even major developments placed inside flood channels diverting flood water so it severely damages schools, etc. but how do we stop this rot. We must change the QLD state legislation on planning to give councils some specific power to stop dangerous development. Pictured after the event is a local resident holding a sign showing they have had enough chaotic development.

Breaking News: High tide threatens to undermine candidates' posters.

One of the Cairns Local News poll favourites and mayoral candidate Denis Walls said: "we only put this sign in this morning and now it is under threat" . he continued "the neon sign confirms the poll on 16 but high tides could undermine our democracy. This is why we need good planning" he said.

Community First candidates, Nicole Sleeman for Cairns Division 6, Renee Lees for Division 7 - Community First Cairns and Marisa Seden for Division 3, Community First Cairns have spoken out forcefully in today’s media on the issue of domestic violence and how this should be a local government issue.

Marisa Seden makes the point that Council should be actively partnering with the community to prevent DV similar to what has been achieved in Mackay which has formed a Mayor’s DV Taskforce with very successful results in abating violence in the home.

Community First is a team with five strong female candidates and, on International Women’s Day, it’s appropriate and wonderful to see our candidates front and centre at women’s day events in Cairns emphasising and reinforcing the importance of having powerful women seeking positions of power.

Chelsea Scanlon and I cleaned up the mess of litter next to Hungry Jack's near the DFO this morning. We managed to fill two and a half huge bags of rubbish with the passing help of Edward from Mornington Island. The Crew Captain at Hungry Jack's came out to show his appreciation of the clean up and I urged him to ask the manager to ask staff to spend five or ten minutes each day collecting the waste packaging outside the premises on the grass to prevent such a build up of litter in the future.

Thanks to you Chelsea for organising this and the hard work you put in. It was great working together and very satisfying to leave the grassy and treed area next to the drain in a fresh, clean state. It would be wonderful if people could simply use the waste bins provided instead of just throwing it on the ground!"
