As many panicked customers are being cautioned to avoid large crowds and any "non-essential" shopping, there are still ways small businesses can keep customers engaged and maintain cash flow during these times.
Offer online purchases. If you're not already setup with an online store, you can still leverage your social media pages to showcase products and utilize e-transfers via online banking in the meantime. Consider setting up local free delivery to the door - customers will appreciate not having to walk into crowded public places.
Ask your customers to consider purchasing gift cards for future use. If you're not currently open for the public (children's activity centers, entertainment facilities) or if you offer primarily services (spa, dog grooming), you may benefit more from gift card sales than product purchases online. An effective way to encourage gift cards today is to offer a promotion such as "purchase a $50 gift card for $40". Customers will appreciate the option to save money and look forward to visiting your business as soon as possible.
Encourage customer referrals. If your business is slower than usual right now, it's a great time to build your customer base for future communications. Customers staying home have more time for social media and are more likely to spend a few minutes to refer a friend. Customers are more likely to take action (referrals, surveys, polls, social media likes, etc.) with incentives such as bonus points!
