THE CLIFFS OF MOHER. COUNTY CLARE. IRELAND. By
Buy the print here! https://jimfitzpatrick.com/product/the-cliffs-of-moher/

Like a lot of my more recent work, it’s taken a good while to finish. I started this back in 2016 and have been adding to it every time I have had an opportunity to work on it. Like a lot of my art, the plan goes out the window very quickly. Once the drawing begins it takes on a life of its own and over time more and more elements are slowly added or excluded. Like all my Celtic work it is primarily a linear work.
When the preparatory pencil sketches are finished I move to inking which is probably the most time-consuming part of this entire exercise and one of the most enjoyable.

The insets are always to the front of my mind designing a work like this one and the question is always a simple one: what goes into them? Have I a mythological basis for any additions to what is already such a marvelous iconic landscape? In this case, I was very fortunate having County Clare roots.

My mom hailed from Kilmaely, County Clare, so this one is for her and her influence is clearly visible in the inset painting relating to the stories she and her very old aunt, my minder when I was a nipper, told me as I grew up.

This aunt was a fountain of knowledge of Irish history and family history and she told me so many stories when I was a kid, often scary as hell. Of course, everything is much more vivid and alive when we are young but the story of the rather vindictive but seductive Moher Mermaid always stayed with me -and I remembered too the tales of the legendary, ghostly white horse that appeared from time to time around the Hags Head. It was there that a British Army lookout tower, called Moher Tower, was built in 1780 to watch out for the expected French Revolutionary Army invasion fleet during the Napoleonic wars.

ST. PATRICK BANISHES THE SERPENTS by

Originally commissioned by a US company and never used; they considered it a little too wild but I enjoyed creating this different and more imaginative portrait of our national saint. Patrick was no slouch and rebelled against the rigid authority of Rome and allowed the Irish to keep their religious beliefs while incorporating Christianity into their ancient belief system. From then onwards Irish missionaries carried the gospels to Europe and converted many of the most barbarous and powerful tribes to Christianity.

The most potent and well-known myth attached to the mythical, not the real, Saint Patrick, is the tale of his banishment of all reptiles from Ireland as they were thought to represent Satan and his demons and were in thrall to the dark side of nature. The real Patrick (Patricius) was taken prisoner by Irish sea-raiders (yes, the Irish went a-Viking too) and brought to Ireland to be auctioned as a slave.

It is known that he was born to a wealthy upper-strata family of Celtic Britons near the end of the fourth century. He is believed to have died on March 17th, around 460 A.D.PS. This is not a day to drink yourself senseless in his honor – back in the day Saint Patrick would have given you a good crack of his oaken crozier to straighten you out and put a strap in your step and sent you on your way if you overdid it on the demon drink.

I noticed some time ago that many of the Celtic Crosses displayed upon my site are very detailed. Detail drives price (in my work) and I set out on a mission to make some more simplistic & attractive pieces. So far this is what I have....

Imbolc is the Cross-Quarter day that celebrates the promise of spring. You can really feel the difference in the length of days by February 1st in the Northern Hemisphere, and in spite of the wintery weather, I always feel like I have made it through the worst of the winter darkness by this day.

This image of Brigid caries both her symbols as a pre-Christian goddess and her Christian assimilation. Above her head is an offering bowl of eternal fire, fed by the burning of acorns, amply available in her home of Kildare (Cill Dara in Irish means "church of the oaks"). The four-armed Brigid's Cross is reflected in the later Celtic Cross of her Christian tradition. The unfurling fiddlehead ferns are the first signs of green on the forest floor, a sign that spring is not far behind.

Hi everyone, for some strange reason, around this time one year ago the Imbolc painting stopped, and I would find all kind of excuses to do other things rather than complete it.
As we move closer to Imbolc and Brigid's Day, February 1st, the painting seems to have switched back on. This time I am looking forward to stepping back into the art.
A selection of my art plus the new Brigit at Imbolc will be displayed on various buildings in Ireland from 31st January to February 1st
