Newborn Metabolic Screen ✨🩸 Aka Guthries ✨Newborn metabolic screen is a test babies can have done at 48 hours post birth with consent from the mother. ✨ Newborn metabolic screening is a way of identifying babies with an increased risk of having rare but serious disorders known as metabolic disorders. Metabolic disorders do not usually show any signs or symptoms at birth, and are difficult to identify without a blood test. Babies identified through screening as having an increased risk of a disorder need diagnostic testing to confirm if they have a disorder. Your Lead Maternity Carer (LMC) or midwife will discuss this with you. If you consent on behalf of your baby, a blood sample will be taken from them as soon as possible after they are 48 hours old. A few drops of your baby's blood will be taken from their heel and placed on a blood spot card. Information relating to your baby will be written on the card, and the sample will be sent to the laboratory to be tested for 23 metabolic disorders. The Newborn Metabolic Screening Programme screens newborn babies for 23 metabolic disorders: * amino acid disorders (9 disorders, including PKU and MSUD) * fatty acid oxidation disorders (8 disorders) * others: * Congenital hypothyroidism (CH) * Cystic fibrosis (CF) * Congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) * Galactosaemia * Biotinidase deficiency * Severe combined immune deficiency (SCID). Antental harvesting! How to!
Antenatal hand expressing! Aka Antenatal harvesting! Aka Liquid cold! Collecting colostrum has so many benefits… not only for the baby but also for the mama! Colostrum is rich in immunoglobulins and antimicrobial properties! Plus, antenatal harvesting helps to stimulate the women’s milk and releases small amounts of our love hormone ‘oxytocin’ ! From 36 weeks pregnant women can start to collect colostrum by hand expressing. FYI: Very unlikely but… If you start to feel contractions before 37 weeks stop hand expressing and contact your midwife. How to hand express: ✨Wash your hands before you start and find a comfortable place to sit. ✨Have a clean spoon, small cup, or syringe ready to collect your colostrum. ✨Begin to gently massage your breast to help with milk flow ✨Put your hand on your breast in a C shape (like on video). ✨Gently begin to push your thumb and fingers back towards your chest, then squeeze them together while you move towards the nipple. (But do not pinch the nipple. This should not feel uncomfortable) ✨You may then see some drops of colostrum and catch this colostrum in your spoon, cup or syringe. Every drop is precious. It can sometimes take a few tries before you may see any colostrum✨ ✨You can express three times in the same day for 5 minutes from 36 weeks. Have a chat with your midwife or health care provider about antenatal hand expressing.
