Colonial Beach Humane Society

This organization was founded to support spay/neuter of feral cats in Colonial Beach.

The Mission of the Colonial Beach Humane Society, founded by Pat Fitzgerald, is to humanely control the feral cat population in CB through TNR and Colony Maintenance. With Pat Fitzgerald's permission, I have claimed this page and will administer the page for the Colonial Beach Humane Society.

Thank you for your Public Comments on the proposal to allow dogs on the beach in the summer from 6-9 am. The number of people who opposed the change was far greater than the number of people who supported it. Their testimonies during our Public Comment period were powerful.

As a result, I made the motion to remove the proposed change in language from Ordinance No. 758, Chapter 5, “Beaches, Waterways, Boardwalk, Parks, Recreational Areas and Facilities” of the Town of Colonial Beach Code of Ordinances.

Based on the Public Comments, I am convinced that the issue is NOT just about “dogs on the beach between 6 and 9 am in the summer season." The overwhelming problem is enforcement of this and other prohibitions related to our beaches.

There are still many dog friendly places in Colonial Beach. I encourage you to support Dockside Restaurant and Tiki Bar, and the Colonial Beach Yacht Center, which allow their customers to bring their dogs to play on the private beach at the end of The Point.

I encourage you to help enforce the rules related to the beaches, the Boardwalk, along the Town’s Right of Way, AND at Robin Grove Dog Park through Peer Pressure. If you see something, say something, NICELY!

Through CB Rivah Dogs donations and volunteerism, we have installed and are maintaining over 20 pet waste stations around Town. But, the pet waste problem continues. I have been a bit overwhelmed by the amount of dog f***s on the ground at Robin Grove Park. It reminds me of those “free” Dog Parks I see adjacent to fast food establishments at Interstate Exits. I spent about 20 minutes picking it up while Ren played in the park.

Thank you for all you do to help make Colonial Beach more Dog Friendly and Dog Safe!

Will Leon take home $10,000, be featured on the cover of Modern Cat, and take the title of America’s Favorite Pet? You decide! I rescued him from the barn where I kept my horse. He was always with his sister, Trooper, she preferred to stay at the barn.

Another good year! We spayed or neutered 103 cats in 2023 and are well on our way to exceeding that number in 2024. We are grateful to our donors and volunteers who give their time and money to keep the feral cat community both healthy and under control.

The Colonial Beach Humane Society is a 501(c)3 charity founded by Pat Fitzgerald in 1992. Also known as “Colonial Cats”, we have spayed or neutered over 741 cats since December 2017, preventing the birth of over 12,000,000 feral kittens in the Colonial Beach area! We don't have good numbers prior to 2017, but we can extrapolate that we have prevented billions of feral kittens since 1992. The chart below represents the population growth for just 1 female cat over 8 years if left uncontrolled.

Please keep an eye out for Pete. He’s a small feral kitten, about 4 pounds, a light gray tabby from Monroe Bay Campground area who was neutered last week. Sorry, we don’t have any pics. He escaped while being transported home from the TNR run and was last seen in the block between Monroe Bay Avenue, Jefferson Street, Marshall Avenue, and Boundary Street. He may be trying to find his way around the shore back to the campground but we all know that’s a very long trek even if he’s orienting in the right direction! If he has found refuge at your house and you’re feeding him, please call Pat Fitzgerald at +1 (804) 761-5115. She can bring you a trap so we can try to catch him and get him back to his colony.
