The Sacramento Bee’s 2022 Top 25 AAPI Change Makers list includes individuals who have done exceptional work to promote equity, strengthen community ties and amplify the voices of the region. This list includes two of our very own Trojan alumni.

ANNIE V. LAM is the executive director and founder of the nonprofit APIs Mobilize and the executive director of the California API Legislative Caucus Institute, organizations with a mission to promote AAPI participation in public service and government via mentorship and programs. She is also the principal and founder of Lam Consulting group. Lam received her MPA from USC Sol Price School of Public Policy & EdD in Organizational Change and Leadership from USC Rossier School of Education.

MAHEEN AHMED became the first Muslim legislative director in the California Assembly in 2019, a position she held for Democrat Rob Bonta. She joined Attorney General Rob Bonta’s Office last year and helped to create an office charged with building relationships with historically marginalized communities. She now is the deputy director of the Office of Community Awareness, Response, and Engagement (CARE). Outside of work at the Attorney General’s Office, Ahmed works to promote equity and justice as a board member of Sacramento Area Congregations Together. Ahmed received her MPA from USC Sol Price School of Public Policy in Sacramento.

Arielle Rubin (she/her) is a second year MPA student at USC Sol Price School of Public Policy in Sacramento with a desire to improve community programs through thoughtful, data-driven decision-making. In addition to taking classes at USC’s State Capital Center, Arielle is a Member Engagement Associate at CapRadio. In this role, she handles donor cultivation and gift entry for CapRadio’s partner station NSPR. Prior to moving to Sacramento, Arielle worked in various marketing and development roles at nonprofit arts organizations in the Bay Area after earning her BS Theatre Arts Management from Ithaca College. In her spare time, Arielle enjoys exploring the outdoors and eating all the cookies and brownies she can get her hands on.

We are so of MPA student Sara Grijalva on her Dale Fenton Passion Award and International Award from Active 20-30 US & Canada for her efforts in translating and interpreting between English and Spanish. 🎊

Sara is currently the Vice President of the Active 20-30 Club of Greater Folsom #77, a member of the International Translation Committee and the International Newsletter Committee, and will be graduating from our USC Sol Price School of Public Policy Sacramento MPA program in Spring 2023!

It is with deep sadness that we share news that Emeritus Professor Jeffrey Chapman has passed away. Professor Chapman was a faculty member in Public Administration at USC for over 25 years (1973-1998), and during that time he directed the School of Public Administration (1986-1993) and the Sacramento Center (1983-1986, 1997-1998). He moved to ASU in the late 1990s and retired from teaching in 2013. He was an expert on public finance and fiscal responsibility and continued to conduct research and publish on his work long after he retired.

We are sending our condolences to those who had the pleasure of knowing and working with Professor Chapman.

MPA Alum Dan Dunmoyer was featured in The New York Times on how the state of California is short of contractors due to the wildfires. "Most big insurance companies will just cut you a big check, and you can be sitting there looking at a check for $900,000. And you talk to contractors and they say: ‘Sure, I can build you a home, but I’m backed up for a year and a half.’ So we’re seeing a lot people just cut and run.”
