It’s birthday today. I’m proud of her. We’ve shared some good belly laughs recently. I remember our first zoom went something along the lines of Em declaring to me that she’s ‘a bit weird’. Without hesitation I assured her in saying ‘brilliant, let’s be weird together’.

Today she released new music. Her first single of the forthcoming album ‘Magic woman dancing’

The feeling of love in the room was palpable. Thank you to everyone that came through for MY LIFE WITH COLOUR exhibition opening!

Deep gratitude to who gracefully led the instal of the exhibition baby in arms. My dear friend helping me open the show and for playing 🎻 to commemorate dad’s birthday. Family showed up strong for me - I love you - my favourite moment ending the night with a picnic in the gallery

Floating on waves of grief I share the news of my beautiful dad recently passing away

My comrade, my collaborator, a creative genius. To publicly honour his life I have been curating a retrospective exhibition featuring art works of his from 1973 to 2023.

By example my dad taught me that creativity is a way of being. Not something you do. To tile a floor is to make a mosaic. To paint a wall is to create a mural. To pick a bunch of flowers is to study colour. Problems only leading to finding way creative ways of solving them. For the last few weeks I’ve been walking around wearing his shoes - that makes most sense for now.

I never studied film, learning a lot about the craft by just giving it a go. Even now as ‘the director’ I still shy away from saying action on my sets, I enjoy giving that moment away to someone else. My crews are always teaching me about ‘film talk’ and terminology. As a process of creating my ideas I often start at the end to find the beginning.

Forging a career in film for me has been guided by gut instinct, trail, error and above all a passion for making things. If you have ever been interested making music videos - come down and hang with me!

From 87-91’ my dad owned now a bar & bistro called FIGARO 98 Smith at Collingwood.

I had my 2,3,4 & 5 birthday parties there. Strawberry milkshakes. Plates of prawns. Dads art on the walls. Apparently right at peak night service I would wake from my bed and walk to the railing that looked down into restaurant from the level above. Cry my eyes out until my dad would came to come get me. I didn’t much like being on my own. Preferred sitting on a high chair in the kitchen. Near him.

Dad told me the stories of poetry readings. Flamenco nights. Serving drinks between legs of Brazilian dancers on the bar. The time Marcel Marceau bought one of his paintings. The other time he had too close to the public to cook Mick Jagger 4 different kinds of pasta.

I need some help. I am looking for anyone who may have worked or been a patron at Figaro. Maybe it’s you or your parents or an old family friend. If it is, please get in touch 🙏🏽

Bel was fairly new to having her photo taken at the time so was a great process helping her come out of her shell and just relax into playing dress ups n throwing shapes.
