I’ve found myself at a loss of words with nothing worthy enough to disrupt a blank page.

Losing Jon Wysocki has felt like an emotional roller coaster. One moment you’re up, one moment you’re down, and then the next moment you’re spinning upside down, unable to catch your breath and ready to throw up. It’s been a few days, and although I feel the ride slowing down, everything in life is so different, yet the same. I want to pull the emergency brake and have the ride come to a halt, forcing time to stop in its tracks, but I’m not that naive. Time doesn’t slow down or stop for anyone, no matter how loud you scream on the ride.

The ride began when Cody Denton and I lost Lydia. We moved to Nashville to find who we were going to be as “people” again after thinking for nine months we would be a “mom” or “dad” to our daughter, Lydia. We were navigating a new journey, unsure of where it would lead us, and leaned heavily on music for comfort and peace. After spending months barricaded in a tiny one-bedroom apartment, we wrote a dozen songs and set forth on a mission to find band members by placing an ad online. Through a mutual friend who saw the ad, we were introduced to Jon.

A few jam sessions later and Lydias Castle found its heartbeat, Jon Wysocki.

There was a time we all met up at Bar Louie for dinner to discuss Lydia’s Castle’s look and sound. I remember sitting across the table from Jon and he said, “Tonya, if you’re going to front this rock band, you need to grow a set of balls and really own it. None of this sissy-girly s**t. You really need to power stance it up and own it”. I could instantly feel my confidence level drop, feeling as though I wasn’t good enough. That night, after we left, I rolled my windows up in my car and belted out a noise from the pits of my stomach. I remember looking around to make sure no one heard me and then I did it again, and again, and again. And from there, I developed the vocal screams that I do today in our music. At a time where I felt voiceless, Jon came into my life and helped me find my voice, developing what would later be Lydia’s Castle’s sound.

From there, the music flowed out of us naturally like a river full of life. Some musicians wait a lifetime to develop a form of “music love language”, a chemistry where words aren’t spoken, but felt, creating music telepathically. What we had together, and what we were building, was bigger than all of us and we knew it. We checked our egos at the door, knowing we were more than just a band, and that together we were building something beautiful to help others.

It's funny because I don’t think we ever formally asked Jon if he wanted to be in the band. He inserted himself, kept showing up, and wanted to be a part of it. I remember telling Cody, “I’m not telling Staind’s ex-drummer that he can’t be in our band. Are you?” He laughed and said, “No. I guess if he just keeps showing up, we know he wants to be here”. A year later, Jon came to rehearsal with the Lydia’s Castle crown tattooed on his chest and I remember saying “I guess he’s with us forever”. That statement could never be more true today.

It was beautiful to watch Jon, someone of his caliber, sitting on his throne like a king yet so humble when he met new people. He never denied anyone and always made time to listen. He radiated love, encouraging both children and adults to follow their dreams. When he was approached at shows or in public, people would say “Hey! Aren’t you the drummer from Staind?” and he would reply, “No. I’m the drummer for Lydia’s Castle”. He embraced that title with honor and wore it proud, like the tattoo on his chest.

I loved Jon beyond a bandmate. He was family, an older brother figure, someone I valued, respected, and looked up to. At a time where I was in my lowest mindset, after losing Lydia and feeling as though I was the biggest failure, Jon shined a light in my life and helped me find purpose again. When I felt low, he picked me up. When I felt like I wasn’t good enough, he reminded me that I was. When I felt hopeless, he comforted me. Who I am today, as a person and as a musician, is because of Jon believing in me, when I didn’t believe in myself.

I will always associate Jon with one word… “Love”. The love he expressed to all of you, the love he showed me and the band, his love for his family, his music, and the happiness it ignited within him. Jon was simply “love”.

As this ride slows down, this isn’t goodbye, just “I’ll see you again soon, brother.

Until the next ride”.

Some people say don’t meet your idols because you gamble the risk of disappointment. Last night I took that gamble, swallowed my nerves, and met one of the most nicest human beings. Lzzy Hale was everything I imagined she would be, and more. I’m thankful for this moment, her time, and the kindness she showed to everyone in the music scene. It was a pleasure sharing the stage with her and I can’t wait to see what the future holds for women of rock! 🤘🏼
