The muck stops here: Garbage heaps swell across Bengaluru - Times of India

"The contractor lobby has made it difficult to work out any solution. To top it, they don't pay pourakarmikas on time, giving them an excuse not to report to work every day. Both BBMP and the government have failed to take action. While on the one hand, they allow experts to work with the system and propose rules that match with current world economics, they don't implement the same," NS Ramakanth, member of the SWM Round Table, pointed out. http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/bengaluru/The-muck-stops-here-Garbage-heaps-swell-across-Bengaluru/articleshow/52966537.cms

Congratulations to NS Ramakanth for being named as a member of Bengaluru Vision Group by the Government of Karnataka

NS RAMAKANTH, SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT EXPERT

Bengaluru is the best city as far as policy is concerned but enforcement is weak. Right now, for 198 wards, we are short of 80 health inspectors. In some cases, junior health inspectors are assigned two wards. A Solid Waste Management Cell must be created and each ward should have a health inspector.

An environment engineer should be appointed for every two wards exclusively for solid waste management. We have a segregation policy and even the High Court has stipulated fines but there i ..

Please contact me if you want to make your wedding 'eco friendly"!

What exactly is Eco Friendly Wedding?

In this update we would like to tell you more about our decision to make an eco friendly wedding and the steps we are talking to ensure that our celebration leaves behind less burden on the landfills.

It is really a sad thing most weddings/ celebrations these days generate massive amount of trash. The biggest generator is the dining hall where there are 3 /7 plastic utensils per plate including a bottle of water. All these creates a mass of never degrading trash which goes to landlfill. Just think back 20 yrs ago and you will realise that none of these things were a part of wedding, everyone managed perfectly fine then, why can’t we do now. With this we can now start a family tradition of making sure that we create as little garbage as possible. The following are the salient points

1. To save paper all invites are through e-invites, for religious purpose only about 50 or 100 invitation cards can be printed as you know saving paper saves trees.

2. Dining utensils, glasses, spoons, plates, reuseable melamine plates, banana leaves can be used. We are saying a “happy no” to disposables and we would like the couple to start their lives with no garbage foot prints. There will be no disposable paper roll in the dining table only reusable roll that will be in whipped after every meal. All the banana leaves are sent to the cow sheds for the cows to consume. Leftover food waste is either sent to piggeries or composting and coffee/tea powder leftovers are sent to nearest park for composting.

3. Floral decoration- Decorators should use all be creative and bring the happiness of the couple by using no plastic zari or styrofoam in their decoration. We should ensure after all the ceremony/celebrations all the bouquets/ flowers to make a wonderful compost.

Nowadays no body bats an eyelid at the massive amount of disposables our way of life generates, an act tantamount to violence against our planet. In weddings they must mitigate this at every step possible and encouraging the bride and groom to save the planet, so that they can carry the message forward to all.
