This coming Friday, August 2nd, meet up with Livia Kerr at the Auburn Art Walk to see her newest creations. Livia, Paula Amerine and Janet Paehlig will be hosting an open reception from 5-8pm at 124 Orange Street, in their Art Studios at St. Lukes.

“I began creating abstract mosaics when I discovered the potential of incorporating natural elements like rocks, slate, driftwood, shells etc. into my works. Nature has always been a profound source of inspiration for me, especially the textured, organic shapes of its elements.

My creative process starts with gathering various natural materials during my hikes and explorations. These elements form the foundation of my mosaics. I meticulously design the mosaic envisioning how each piece will contribute to the overall composition. I then hand-cut the stone, smalti (specialized glass), hand-pulled filati (fused glass rods), metal wire, and other materials with precision and care.

Each tessera is carefully set into mortar and placed with deliberate intention considering the texture, flow, and color harmony of the entire mosaic. This thoughtful arrangement creates a cohesive and dynamic artwork. The process is not only artistic but also deeply therapeutic, providing me with a sense of calm and fulfillment. - Livia Kerr”

“Art, for me, is a journey of exploration and discovery, a deep connection to the world around me. When I create, I liberate color and texture from their external constraints, allowing them to become the focal point of my work. Inspiration and emotions guide me, whether experimenting with slate mosaics or painting with oil and acrylic on canvas, I trust in the process.” Livia Radu Kerr, originally from Bucharest, Romania, now calls Auburn, California home. Her one-of-a-kind Slate Mosaics are meticulously handcrafted, utilizing a variety of materials including stone, smalti (specialized mosaic glass), handpulled filati (artisan fused glass rods), raku, and metal wire. Livia Radu Kerr, originally from Bucharest, Romania, now calls Auburn, California home. She is a versatile artist, primarily known for her skilled fine art pieces, working with oil and acrylic paints on canvas and wood panels.

Inspired by nature, Livia's work often explores the beauty of the natural world. In her paintings, Livia emphasizes composition and emotion, aiming to evoke a powerful response from viewers. She enjoys experimenting with shadows, light, metallic foil, modeling paste for texture and depth, and other mixed media to breathe life into her creations.
