Three teams from a 2021 one-day Impactathon at Soka University continued working on their ideas through a multi-month student venture competition that involved 85 university teams and awarded over $100k in prizes across categories.

All 3 teams that participated in Impactathon went on to sweep the top three places in the semifinals of the Social Enterprise category.

Those accolades are inspiring— speaking to the determination and hard work of the students and support.

But more so, it shows us that unlocking our inner problem solver and unleashing of our inner social entrepreneur can continue to guide belief in our potential.

Receiving notes like these is our “why.”

This student will graduate in 2023 and has accepted a full-time role. Her experience in social enterprise continues to inspire her to find like-minded communities of entrepreneurial impact-drive problem solvers.

"Brands should think of themselves not as storytellers but storybuilders. We plant seeds of content and let our community build on it.”
- Amy Pascal, Sony Pictures Entertainment

What is the story your social enterprise is telling?

How is your community adding, sharing, and building the story.

As social impact founders, sometimes we don’t realize that we are building brands alongside impact, alongside business models.

This is an invitation to build a brand with clarity, intentionality, and as invitation for your community to become its greatest champions.

As we face increasingly complex global and local issues— could cross-generational collaboration support the next level of social innovation problemsolving?

Join Connecting the Dots — an interactive, online discussion, hosted by Nalini Saxena this Friday (2-5pm PST) -- to talk about the power of cross-generational social innovation.

Will be sharing a opening remarks, leading into a deeper conversation.

We have had participants ages 13-80 join Impactathons and noticed unique discussions and chasms crossed in some of our cross-generational teams. The proof is in the pudding, those teams have often received awards in the events.

We gather wisdom at all stages of our lives– and collaborative events like Impactathon and hackathons flatten age-based hierarchies and allow us to collaborate on the same plane.

We would love to hear your voice as part of this conversation!

Excited to share that Innov8social will be participating in the Washington Maritime Blue incubator program in Tacoma, 2022-2023!

The focus will be iterating and evolving the Impactathon® model and publishing the children's books that introduce a problem-solving mindset to young learners.

Why join an incubator at this stage in the company's existence?

Innov8social (and I :) are new to the PNW and this provides a 'fresh start' of kinds and a chance to listen and understand how this work can serve the community and support + amplify the social enterprise ecosystem here.

The Impactathon model also shifted a great deal during covid, moving to online and hybrid formats, which have worked but have felt really different from the live events. This incubator program and cohort create a 'safe space' to think through how to evolve the model to be a better product-market fit.

I am proud of what we have been building over the last decade. But, it still has room to grow into the vibrant, abundant, creative business we envision. This incubator is a chance to address & delegate challenge points, cultivate strengths, and look at this work with a new lens.

And, Innov8social is brand new to children's books! I am excited about creative events for littles (did someone say 'tiny hackathons' ? :) that could emerge to support and empower a problem-solving mindset for our young learners who watch the news and are cognizant of the many pressing issues that may be down the pipeline, especially in relation to our oceans and waterways.

Hope to be able to contribute any of the ecosystem building experience we have to Tacoma and to this program. We're honored and excited to join such a vibrant community of founders. Thank you Maritime Blue for the support and belief in this work. Let's do this! ✨

Much has been written about this and will no doubt be discussed in board rooms, legal offices, classrooms, and among founders and social entrepreneurs.

TLDR; Patagonia's founder Yvon Chouinard and family have transferred their ownership of the company to a specially designed trust and a nonprofit organization. That rounds out to a cool $3b.

It's generally thought to be hard to become a successful entrepreneur, but then you have a founder who is described (and quoted) as going from never having wanted to be a businessman to becoming the ultimate 'reluctant billionaire.'

His vote of 'no confidence' extends to the stock market--- one reason he opted not to take the company public--- which arguably would have multiplied resources for causes the company supports; but with the risk of not being able to maintain his vision and standard for prioritizing environment and community.

To be clear, this is a game changing move. Not only for Patagonia and the legacy of Chouinard...but for how we push the boundaries of how social impact is extended beyond the enterprise.

Excited to explore this through deeper discussions ahead!

Take 2 😉. Thank you Andy Vargo of Andy Vargo] for the warm invitation to join the Own Your Awkward podcast and share a trait that could be considered “awkward”…but can actually be a superpower!

Did you know 15-20% of people may be considered “highly sensitive people”(HSP) or empathic? I explored this concept through an audiobook by Anita Moorjani. , called “Sensitive is the New Strong”.

My “awkward” is that I realize I may fall into this category. I shared this with Andy and talked about how being empathic or sensitive can shift how we work and interact in different settings—- but, with awareness can make us leaders and contributors who lead with empathy and kindness and ensure the same for our teams and stakeholders.

Hope you enjoy our fun conversation…and that it helps you, if you may be on the HSP side or can help you support a colleague or team member who may be.

Love that we can continue learning about ourselves at every stage of our work and careers!

Sometimes we are reminded that our work, words, and intentions are always creating ripples.

Because we see a glimpse of how the dots are connecting downstream.

Inspired to see that an Impactathon sparked a connection with the integrative law practice of Conscious Contracts in Zambia.

Calling all impact problem solvers and social entrepreneurs…THIS is an issue ready for a solution:

“Beyond Plastics, a nationwide project in Bennington College working to eliminate plastic pollution, and environmental nonprofit Last Beach Cleanup reported that the U.S.’s already measly rate of recycling has decreased in the last few years. According to their analysis, hardly any plastic waste was recycled last year.

The organizations collected data from the National Academy of Sciences, which found that ONLY ABOUT 6% of plastic items were recycled in 2021.” -

In recent , teams have introduced recycling solutions— this is a powerful study and set of statistics that show a real need for recycling support. Don’t give up, ✨✨

Hindsight is 20/20! With that in mind, standing at the shore can feel a lot different than in the ship of social enterprise.⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
In a session on social enterprise earlier today on the Clubhouse app, a participant asked our founder, "you mentioned the buy 1, give 1 model of TOMS shoes-- but aren't they heading for bankruptcy?"⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The question is fair. And the news is true. ⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
According to Business Insider, "TOMS had a 300 million dollar loan due in 2020. Credit rating agencies expected it wouldn't be able to pay....in late 2019, a group of TOMS creditors officially took over the company from Bain Capital and Blake Mycoskie in exchange for debt relief. When Business Insider reached out to TOMS, a representative said that, quote, "The new owners support TOMS future growth and are investing 35 million dollars into the company."⠀⠀⠀⠀⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⁣⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Is there a lesson there for future social entrepreneurs? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This is question 48 in the book. And a reminder that social impact cannot be the 'best' or redeeming part of a business idea--- informed consumers will demand innovation, creativity, excellence, and usefulness. ⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
TOMS may well find its footing moving forward. And it's story can become part of our shared awareness of what is possible and what is challenging about building and scaling social enterprise.⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

was established by President Obama during his first term—-and continued and grew throughout his administration’s tenure.⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Truly global, and truly focused on entrepreneurship— the event brought together thousands of audacious, bold, and innovative entrepreneurs from across the globe. Many of them, perhaps not coincidentally, prioritized creating social impact in their work.⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It was an opportunity of a lifetime to attend. We hope experiences like this are championed by the new US administration and by global governments and agencies. ⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Why would a serial entrepreneur decide to launch a social enterprise?⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Many serial enterpreneurs are driven by a deep "why" when pursuing social enterprise ventures. From their startup experience they see gaps--- where 'success' in startup world doesn't necessarily account for, measure, or even acknowledge the impact the company is and will make (both positive and negative).⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
As we see leaders from every generation taking sharper focus of the effect of climate change--- the need for considering impact at the start of a venture has never been more important.⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

On this day, Martin Luther King Jr.'s words ring with a nuance we have deeper context to understand.⁣⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⁣⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Reading his "Letter from a Birmingham Jail" I find cogent articulations I have seen in articles and social media posts from the past year.⁣⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⁣⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Listen to MLK Jr. read this letter here:⁣⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

⁣⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Read the letter here:⁣⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

⁣⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
A few quotes that took on deeper meaning in this moment:⁣⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⁣⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
"IN ANY nonviolent campaign there are four basic steps: collection of the facts to determine whether injustices are alive, negotiation, self-purification, and direct action. We have gone through all of these steps in Birmingham."⁣⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⁣⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
"Nonviolent direct action seeks to create such a crisis and establish such creative tension that a community that has consistently refused to negotiate is forced to confront the issue. It seeks so to dramatize the issue that it can no longer be ignored."⁣⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⁣⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
How might we 'listen' more deeply to MLK Jr. on this day and to those who carry on his message today...⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Do social enterprises fail? How can failure be overcome? ⁣

“Failure” is one framing— another is to see it as learning leading to “pivots” both for the idea and possibly the career path of the team members.⁣
