The Seed - contemplation of the Gospel of the day by father Lorenzo Montecalvo
THE SEED 🌱
(Lk 12: 13-21)
You're working to leave your children a legacy of material goods, aren't you? If that's your purpose in life, you're making a big mistake. Many brothers and sisters quarrel with each other over the legacy left by their parents. This is what happened in today's Gospel. The father's greed was passed on to his children. And we must not forget that the vice gets worse from father to son.
What is greed? It is the inordinate desire to possess the goods of this world. To possess them, man is also capable of killing his brother and his parent. What moves man to be possessed by the unclean spirit of greed? The thought that the more possessions you possess the more you are full of life. This is a deception. I know rich men who are apparently full of life, but are actually dead inside. Instead, I know men who have only their daily bread and are full of life.
To live only to accumulate the goods of this world is foolish. If you announce to a seriously ill person who has still a few months to live that he has won a lottery, he will certainly not rejoice in winning. He will tell you: "Money has no power to give me life". And that's right. Too bad, however, that this is understood only at the point of death. This is why in our churches it is often necessary to announce that there is the reality of death, a reality that, like a thief, can suddenly enter our homes. I am sure that, not even in front of a body, we think that death belongs to us.
Don't forget that when you hear the bell with its funeral tolls, it rings for you too.
Therefore, if your brother has been clever in taking possession of a good that also belonged to you, do not quarrel with him and lose your peace which is an invaluable good. You must also think that if you die with hatred in your heart towards your brother, you will find yourself
both of them in hell. Amen. Hallelujah.

THE SEED🌱
(Mt 14: 1-12)
Little is said about fraternal correction. This is why evil grows around us. The art of fraternal correction is very difficult to practice. To practice it one must first of all love and practice the Truth. Then we must love the wanderer or the sinner so that, by continuing to live in error or sin, he does not end up in hell. The purpose of correction is to want the sinner's eternal salvation. Correction must be fraternal, that is, made out of love and not to humiliate the wanderer, as often happens. Who loves corrects, is my slogan. If you do not love in an evangelical way, you will say before those who do evil: "Do what you want!" Whoever corrects fraternally plays the role of the Prophet. The Prophet is the one who, called by God, is sent to a people or a person who has voluntarily abandoned the law of God. To welcome the voice of the Prophet one must be very humble. In fact, the proud does not accept being correct. Often (or almost always) the superb always reacts violently when the evil he does is put before his eyes.
The prophets have always been persecuted, slandered and even killed. John the Baptist, who was devoured by the Truth, went every morning under the window of Herod's royal palace and shouted: "Herod, it is not lawful for you to keep your brother's wife!". This reproach had put in his mistress's heart such anger for John the Baptist that, at the right moment, she would have him killed. And so it happened as we read in today's Gospel. Divorce is rampant in this generation. We get married the second and maybe even the third time. We are no longer scandalized by this evil of divorce which is destroying the sacredness of marriage and the unity of the family.
Like the Baptist, do you also have the courage to say to your son, your mother, your father, your friend: "It is not lawful for you to keep your husband or wife ...."? Amen. Alleluia.

(Jn 11,19-27)
In my parish of 50,000 inhabitants there are sometimes two funerals a day. How many sad funerals! Sad funerals are those attended by Christians in name only. Of course, the pain of separation is justified, even Jesus was moved in front of the tomb of Lazarus. The hopeless pain of eternal life is despair.
Days ago there was a funeral in my parish where the protagonist of the liturgy was not Jesus the Risen, but the deceased. Those present gave out tragic cries. Where was the faith in the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ? I must tell the truth that many of the assembly do not attend Sunday Eucharist. In even more atrocious pain, Jesus comforts those who are in tears as he did with Martha and Mary.
We must Christianize the funeral liturgies. When the liturgy of the dead is celebrated by faithful who have faith in the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, there is another air, an air that smells of eternal life.
Even priests, at times, in their homilies speak more of the human qualities of the deceased than of Jesus, the victor of death. Thus the assembly returns home without the consolation of Jesus Christ. Amen. Alleluia.

THE SEED 🌱
(Mt 13,36-43)
The disciples say to Jesus: "Teacher, explain to us the parable of the weeds". If Catholics had the humility of the first disciples, the Church would be full of enlightened Christians. Only those who are humble live with the awareness of being ignorant and not knowing everything. Many years ago a woman told me: "Father, I haven't been to church for many years. I want to go back. I want to go to confession and take Communion. But I tell her right away that I am profoundly ignorant about the meaning of the Sacrament of Confession and the Eucharist. Indeed, I confess my ignorance that I don't even know what the meaning of the word “Sacrament.” Her humility amazed me and her desire to understand the mysteries of the Catholic faith gave me the zeal to explain the mysteries of the Catholic faith to her. Well, after six months of weekly catechesis, in which the woman participated assiduously and with a great desire to learn, she said to me: "Father, if you want, I would like to confess and then celebrate and receive the Eucharist!". my heart leapt for joy. The confession lasted an hour. Without exaggerating, I can say that the floor was wet with tears. That woman, possessed by the Truth, has never left the Church again. For many of her friends and relatives today she is a living example of faith, hope, but above all of charity.
As I go around preaching, I notice that there are many Catholics who are ignorant of Christian doctrine. Where there is ignorance, there is no faith. There is only a natural religiosity that leads Christians to believe in a God according to a human image and likeness. Many Catholics can be reproached like Jesus addressed to the Pharisees and the Scribes: "You adore a God you do not know".
Whose fault is it for this crass ignorance that dwells in the Catholic Church? I attribute it above all to the clergy who have little will to instruct, teach and catechize.
Faith comes from listening, says St. Paul. Therefore, dear readers, moved by the Spirit, ask your parish priests to teach you about the Gospel truths. It is your right. Amen. Alleluia.

THE SEED 🌱
(Jn 20: 1-2.11-18)
One of the most beautiful charisms we can receive from the Holy Spirit is the charism of tears. What does this charism consist of? First of all in shedding tears of contrition. How moving it is to see a penitent who, while confessing his sins, sheds copious tears. "Why are you crying ?, I ask. The answer is immediate:" Because, with my sin, I have rejected God who is my life. "Who gives us the truth of sin is the Holy Spirit! May the Holy Spirit give us weeping of St. Peter after denying Jesus. Peter wept bitterly. May the Holy Spirit also give us the weeping of Mary Magdalene who, in the house of Simon the Pharisee, washed Jesus' feet with the river of tears of contrition! Have you ever weeped for your sins? Tears are the visible sign of contrition of the heart. There are not only external tears, but also internal ones. A confession made without tears does not generate a conversion of the heart.
Tears of gratitude can also be shed profusely. When man feels forgiven, loved and blessed by God without any merit, he sheds tears of gratitude. "Why are you crying?", I sometimes ask men or women of faith after a Eucharistic celebration. The answer is usually: "Despite my sins, I feel that God loves me infinitely."
We also cry when we see that LOVE is not loved around us. It was the cry of Francis of Assisi. One day, running through the woods, he cried shouting: "LOVE is not loved!". The man who is indifferent to everyone and everything does not know the joy of tears. He sheds only capricious tears that we are not called to dry. Amen. Alleluia.

THE SEED 🌱
(Mt 13: 10-17)
The church is full. The word of God is being proclaimed. As you listen, you unconsciously exclaim saying: "How beautiful!" The Holy Spirit is giving you the wisdom and intelligence of God's Word. Your heart leaps for joy. The Word you are hearing is a sweet melody in your ear and it is like honey in your mouth. To everything you are listening to you say AMEN. In other words, acknowledge that God's Word is a life of love and truth for your life. When you finish listening to the word of God, inside you exclaimed with wonder: "Why did the proclamation of the Word of God last so short !?".
Your friend, invited by you to come to church, while the Word of God is being proclaimed, moves constantly, looks left and right, often looks at the watch on his wrist. Then, having the feeling that the proclamation has been going on for hours, he touches you and says in your ear: "When does the priest stop talking because I don't understand anything?". The celebration continues and we arrive at the consecration. Your eyes are wide open and look at the Host that the priest holds up to be adored. This is an important time for you. With the eyes of the spirit you contemplate the presence of Jesus in that Host.
Your friend, on the other hand, whose God is money, remains seated, leafing through the songbook, disinterested in the sacredness of the moment. He does not hear and see nothing. His mind understands nothing, his eyes see nothing and his heart is empty of God. After the Eucharistic celebration, he leaves the church. Outside, while your heart is full of joy for what you have heard, seen and received in your soul, you said to your friend: "It was all beautiful, wasn't it?". And he: "I'm sorry to tell you, but I'm bored!". Your friend has ears, but he does not listen, he has eyes, but he does not see, he has a heart, but he does not understand. Who knows if one day he will return to church! Certainly he will often frequent the bank: the church of the god of money, loving him more and more. Amen. Alleluia.

THE SEED 🌱
(Mt 13: 1-9)
Man of faith, today, wherever the Holy Spirit pushes you, sow the Word of God with both hands. Remember, however, that despite the fascination you emanate and the wisdom you possess, you will not find much success in evangelization. It will not often be given to you to have consolations and victories. Yours will drive you out of the synagogue; religious leaders will harshly criticize you and hold advice to get you out of the way. The crowd will follow you, but only pushed by the itch of the miracles that you will do only to manifest the mercy of the heavenly Father. But once their curiosity is satisfied, the crowd will turn their backs on you without having kept your Word. Only some will open their hearts to welcome the Gospel of life and love. But, knowing human nature which is weak, fickle and superficial, you will continue to sow the seeds of the Gospel without stopping in your missionary zeal. I am sure you will not be disheartened by the rejections and aversions you will encounter up and down the vast field.
Do not forget that you will be snubbed, but the Lord will give you the strength to continue sowing with breadth.
Sure, you will feel sadness when you see that the Word of God will fall on hearts that are hard as a rock.
But be sure that part of the seed that fell in the field will sprout and bear fruit in due time. The harvest will be there and you will reap with breadth.
God's Word never falls in vain. So be a patient sower, do not seek immediate results. Spiritual growth is slow. It takes time, a long time before the grain becomes ripe ear, ready for harvest. Those who sow in tears reap in joy. Amen. Alleluia.

THE SEED🌱
(Mt 12.45-50)
When the Holy Spirit, which the Father gives us through Jesus, makes us understand that God is Father and Creator, then we feel part of a big family; for this reason, Jesus gave us the prayer of the Our Father. Obviously the bond is not blood, but spiritual. With the eyes of the spirit I must see that all men without distinction are my brothers whom I must love. Jesus, by saying that my father, my mother and my brother are the ones who do the will of the heavenly Father, wants us to understand that the spiritual bond is far stronger than that of blood.
Two years ago I was in Medjugorje with a group of pilgrims. On the third day of our stay in that sacred place, while we were praying, a five-year-old boy approached me and said: "Father Lorenzo, you always make us say 'Our Father', then are we all children of the same Father?". And I: "You said well".
Truly the Lord speaks through the mouth of infants as the Holy Scripture says. There will be no love and unity in the midst of men if one does not possess in the mind and heart the first article of faith that we profess every Sunday: "I believe in God the Almighty Father ...". Unfortunately by many Christians it is professed only with the lips like so many parrots. AMEN. ALLELUIA.

THE SEED 🌱
(Mt 12,38-42)
In the early Church there were many miracles and wonders to confirm the preaching of the apostles. Throughout the centuries, miracles and wonders have greatly diminished because the sign of the Risen One must be he who believes in Jesus. Jesus says to true Christians: "Whoever listens to you listens to me and whoever sees you sees me". The big problem is that there are very few true Christians.
In the early Church many converted to Christ not because they saw miracles, but because they saw that many Christians died for Jesus and among them were the signs of faith. What are the signs of faith in the risen Christ? They are two: unity and love.
Throughout the centuries, many have embraced Christianity only with their mouths and not with their lives. For many men and women Christianity has been (and still is) an ideology and not a faith and a way of life. In fact, many say: "I am a Christian, but I continue to hate the enemy ... I am a Christian, but I continue to be an adulterer ... I am a Christian, but I continue to be a pe*****le ... I am a Christian but I continue to be violent, I am Christian, but I believe in divorce, in same-sex unions ... I am a Christian, but I do not care if people are dying of hunger ... I am a Christian, but I am not interested in the Church ... I am a Christian but I do not speak to whom offended me ... I am a Christian, but I go to the magician ... I am a Christian, but I also believe in amulets ". And so on. It is true, many belong only juridically to Christ, because as children they were baptized into the Church, but they have nothing of Christ at all.
In recent decades, the Lord has given us many signs of his presence, but humanity has not accepted them. Who are these signs? I mention only a few: Padre Pio, John Paul II, Mother Teresa of Calcutta and now the apparitions of the Virgin Mary in Medjugorje.
If you put the word of Jesus into practice, you will truly be a sign of the RISEN. Amen. Alleluia.

THE SEED 🌱
(Lk 10,38-42)
The first years of my priesthood were lived in an exasperated activism. Like Marta, I was very engaged in external activities. I thought that the more meat I put in the parish to cook, the more successful I was before God and the members of the parish. Thinking of that time of activism, I must honestly say that I was like a clanging cymbal. I must thank the Lord who, at the age of 39, pushed me to undertake a serious journey of conversion. Constant listening to the Word of God made me understand that, if I did not become like Mary, a contemplative woman, the parish would become more and more like a market: a lot of liturgical noise, a lot of devotion, a lot of sentimentality, many processions and many pilgrimages. Like Mary, prompted by the HOLY SPIRIT, I crouched at Jesus' feet saying to him: “Speak to me Lord, because your servant listens to you.” Prayer became the first activity of the day. Prayer showed me the essential things to do during the day. In short, prayer organized my day according to the ways and thoughts of God. The fire of the HOLY SPIRIT was kindled in my heart and people asked me to be instructed in the realities of the kingdom of God. Prayer made me more and more meek, humble welcoming and thoughtful.
The activities, preceded by strong moments of prayer, communicate truth and love. This is why Jesus reproaches Martha saying: "Martha, Martha, you get upset and worry about many things, but Mary has chosen the best part that will not be taken away from her!". Without cultivating the spirit of prayer, the Christian is like a tree full of green leaves, but without fruit. The Christian who does not pray is more concerned with appearing than with being.
Who are the most sought after women or men as spiritual directors? They are the contemplatives. An empty parish of true prayers is like a plain of withered bones.
Whoever you are and whatever your profession, before starting your daily activities, sit quietly and alone in the presence of the Lord. Accept Jesus in your heart with joy. Be first like Maria so as not to become neurotic and anxious like Martha and then dive into daily chores. You will see that people will tell you: "Do everything right". Amen. Alleluia.

THE SEED🌱
(Jn 10: 1-10)
Jesus says that the sheep that know his voice run away from the voice of a stranger. Unfortunately, in the Church today there are Christians who follow the voice of a stranger and, at the same time, do not welcome the voice of JESUS. They remain to live in the fold of the Church generating and causing disorder in the flock.
One cannot say "I am Catholic" and follow Marx's doctrine. You cannot say "I am Catholic" and follow those who promote abortion, divorce, homosexuality. You cannot say "I am Catholic" and be part of the Freemasonry. One cannot say "I am Catholic" and not believe in the real presence of Jesus in the Eucharist.
The true Christian runs away from people and places that profess to be Christians, but live and teach doctrines that are contrary to the Gospel. In this generation, many teenagers and young people listen to and sing songs that incite them to live a reckless life. The media tell us that the number of su***des among young people is on the rise. I was told a few days ago that, in the past year, ten thousand people have committed su***de in de-Christianized Germany.
We Christians live in the world, but we are not of the world. If we are not strongly and deeply rooted in Christ, the mentality of the world infects us and draws us into the vortex of lies that springs from the heart of Satan. Satan is shrewd and presents himself to us as a wolf dressed as a lamb. His voice is persuasive and convincing. He is capable of presenting himself as light, but his light does not heat and illuminate.
Satan doesn't always show up personally in schools, universities, hospitals, politics and even the Church! He sends his servants to these places to sow the weeds.
Once a girl said to me: "I understand why I am depressed today: during the years of high school a professor of philosophy always told us that God is the invention of the weak man". Don't sleep, parents. ALLELUIA. ALLELUIA.

THE SEED 🌱
(Jn 10: 27-30)
You are the Lord's if you listen to his voice. The verb "to listen" means "to obey". Jesus says: "Blessed are those who hear the Word of God and put it into practice". The problem is that there are many hearers of God's Word and few doers. The fruit of obedience to the Word of God is joy. For example, if you go to the train station early in the morning to reach a certain location and, seeing a poor man sitting on the ground, you stop to give him a small sum to buy a cup of coffee and a croissant, you will then feel great joy. The Holy Spirit, the great Director of our spiritual life, continually inspires us to do good works and to flee from people and places that tempt us to do evil.
Obedience to the voice of the Spirit is the fastest way to become a living image of Jesus Christ. There are various tones of the voice of the Spirit. Sometimes he speaks to us in a sweet and encouraging tone. Other times with a serious tone. Other times again with a loud tone like the sound of thunder.
The devil's voice is always sweet, persuasive and convincing. He always gives reason before doing a bad deed. But, after listening to him, the tone of his voice is despicable and derisory.
If you really belong to Jesus, at the voice of the devil who invites you to take revenge you will immediately say: "Go away, Satan, because it is written: forgive and you will be forgiven".
Never enter into a conversation with the devil, because he will convince you to go against God's will. Immediately shut your ear to the devil's voice. His voice is deceptive. If you become pregnant, he does not hesitate to tell you: "This pregnancy will be your undoing. You will not move forward in your career. Then there will be less money in your bank account. Think about your future!". Whoever belongs to the Lord does not hesitate to say: "Go away, Satan, because your word generates eternal death".
Today Jesus speaks to you through the Church which is faithful to the Gospel. Be careful though! In the Church itself, are there priests who teach doctrines contrary to the Catechism of the Catholic Church. Don't listen to them, don't even listen to certain politicians who profess to be Christians in the Church, but who make laws against the Gospel in parliament. Alleluia. Alleluia.

THE SEED 🌱
(Jn 6: 60-69)
"This word is hard," the listeners exclaimed after Jesus finished his teaching in the synagogue. Even today, in our parish communities, the same thing is said. God's word says, "Love your enemy," and many in the congregation say, "This word is hard." God's word says, "Open your hearts to the poor and do not be stingy" and many in the assembly say : "This word is hard." God's word says, "Premarital in*******se is immoral" and many in the assembly say, "This word is hard."
God's word says: "Divorce is against God's law" and many in the assembly exclaim: "This word is hard!". God's word says, "Gay marriage is an abomination!" and many in the assembly say: "This word is hard!".
The word of God says: "Forgive whoever has hurt you" and many of the assembly exclaim: "This word is hard!".
The worst thing is that the word of God is not accepted precisely by those who profess to be Christians. These Christians applaud those priests who teach doctrines that are diametrically opposed to the mentality of Jesus. The churches where these priests work and preach are always full.
Jesus did not say that the road of the Gospel is wide, but, from the beginning, he told his disciples that the road is narrow. The evangelical journey is tiring, but whoever does it reaches the beatitude that Jesus promised to those who obey him.
When the preacher speaks of God's mercy, the congregation applauds him. However, if he says that attachment to money is diabolical, the face of the assembly becomes sad. And if he says that you have to forgive whoever has offended you, many of the assembly will say to the preacher: "You gave a bad sermon!".
This I say from experience. Many popularizers of the GRANELLINO tell me that some priests refuse to read or meditate THE GRANELLINO because the language is hard and I belong to the Middle Ages. I'm satisfied with having only 16 readers like when I started sending it in May 16, 2015. ALLELUIA. ALLELUIA.

THE SEED 🌱
(Jn 6,52-59)
"So who eats my Body and drinks my Blood will live for me", Jesus says to his disciples of yesterday and today. In these words we find the biblical and theological meaning of the Eucharist that we celebrate and receive every Sunday or every day.
If after the Eucharistic celebration I put myself at the exit of the Church asking the following question to the individual faithful: "You ... who do you live for or what do you live for?", Who knows if everyone would answer me like this: "I live for Jesus".
I am sure that the majority of the faithful would give me answers similar to these: "I live for my children ... I live for my profession ... I live to marry and have a family ... I live to establish myself in society ... I live for football ". And so on. If the same question were asked to the priest, who knows what he would answer! Perhaps he would say: "I live for the parish!".
What does it mean to live for a person or for an earthly purpose? It means giving the mind, heart and energy you have to the person you love or to the set goal to be reached at all costs. It is good and commendable to give oneself to others with love, and it is also good to make a serious effort to achieve a purpose. The Lord does not want us to live selfishly or lazily.
What does it mean to live for Jesus? It means that the purpose of our life is to make known the salvation and love of Jesus Christ which is the full revelation of the Heavenly Father's mercy. I would like to paraphrase the words: "If you gave all your possessions to the poor to be admired by men and not for the love of the Lord, nothing benefits you for eternity." If you teach humanities only for salary, nothing benefits you for eternity If I faced journeys, hardships and disappointments for preaching without making the love of the Lord grow in those who listen to me but only to make my ego grow, nothing benefits me for eternity.
Living for Jesus means that in everything you say and do you must manifest the heart and face of Jesus.
What has the Eucharist been for you up to now? ALLELUIA. ALLELUIA.

THE SEED 🌱
(Jn 6,44-51)
Jesus gives us a bread that does not let us die. Jesus never talks about physical death. We are all destined to die physically. How and when, only the Lord knows. Jesus always refers to the death of being. But what is the death of being? For some of you I would like to explain this death of being. The death of being is the total inability to love. What is love? It is living for the other even when the other does not deserve it.
Whoever loves is alive, whoever does not love is dead. Are you dead or alive? If you are dead, only Jesus Christ can resurrect you. He alone can open your heart so that the living water of love may come out of it. Love is the life of man.
How long have you lived in the tomb of individualism? For four, ten, twenty years? It doesn't matter how long. Jesus can raise you from your death in an instant, just as He did with Lazarus. But what is individualism? It is living only for oneself. The other exists only if you need it and promotes your self. The ruin of marriage, of the family, of the religious and parochial community is precisely the sin of individualism. Individualism is like a cesspool that gives off bad smells. Bad smells have a name and are: pride, envy, anger, greed, lust, sloth and gluttony. They are called capital sins.
Once, while teaching catechism to children, I asked them this question: "What are deadly sins". A child replied: "They are the sins that live in the capital of Rome". Unfortunately, it must be said that the deadly sins live in each of us if we do not convert from the love of the ego to the very pure love of God.
If we do not confess ourselves as sinners and do not ask Jesus to give us a new heart, we remain in our sins. May our cry then be: "Lord, save me!". If your cry is sincere, Jesus will lead you to the feet of a priest to confess your sins. You will then come out of the Church emanating the perfume of the Holy Spirit, which is very pure love.
It is still Easter, a favorable time to be a new creature, capable of putting God and neighbor in your heart. Only in this way will your life become a party. ALLELUIA. ALLELUIA.
