Today is Day, when Latinas "catch up" to what white, non-hispanic men were paid in 2018. The gap is widest for Latina workers, who on average earn only 54 cents for every $1 a man is paid. Meaning, they must work nearly two years to earn what white men earn in one year. This is unacceptable, and we need to act now. Latinas are powerful, and we deserve equal pay!

Happy National Entrepreneur's Day from TWIN Global! Emmy-award winning producer Nelly Galan gave a rousing talk at TWIN Global 2019 about the latent potential of the culture shift that will include more women in the drive for innovation.

On this I want to share a story about how the importance of being kind really shaped my life. When my family immigrated to the U.S. in the late 60’s from Communist Cuba, we were sponsored by a Presbyterian couple; Phyllis and Gene Krebs. They had lost one son in the Vietnam war and another son shortly thereafter. They decided to heal their grief by helping us, and we lived with them for one year in their basement in New Jersey. We learned to eat asparagus and used our made up sign language to communicate. We spent a lot of time laughing in between all of the language barriers and misunderstandings. We shared both Cuban and American food, and we danced.

The Krebs were loving and kind, they even helped my parents find jobs. We were grateful and loved them back. We remained friends with the Krebs through many decades until their passing. These memories have made me think about our responsibility to others, the reason this country exists is because of immigrants. Where would I be without the kindness of strangers? I was treated with acceptance and respect, and that has made all the difference. My success came from the love for my country, and that came from how I was treated when I first arrived. Phyllis and Gene Krebs loved us and surrounded us with their warm generous embrace. Our families connected through our respective pain that helped us heal together. I am reminded of the power of kindness and how small gestures can really lead to extraordinary things.

We must remember the work of leaders who have come before us and sacrificed so much, so we can all reap the benefits of their bravery.
